As we were look at the two short stories, “Students” and “Crow Lake”, it makes realize that each teacher has such a different overview on teaching. We know that students learn with their own methods and how the teachers approach affect their education. Although both teachers are professors and have the same goal, what makes their attitude and observation different?
In each story, the way that the students learn is a major point the author was trying to get across. In the poem “Students” written by Tom Wayman, it displays how each students learns with different methods and even though some may not be the best way, it will always be imprinted in their brains. Some of the techniques are: “Vaccination Theory of Education,” “Dipstick,” “Kung Fu,” and finally “The Easy Listening Theory of Learning.” When reading both of the stories that are coming from a teaching perspective, I think what makes them different is that in the story “Student” the professor acknowledged the fact that students have different ways of learning. The professor found out all the different methods, and then found a way around them to make it work. However, in the story “Crow Lake” the professor did not care nor want to care about her students and her teaching methods. The teacher loved doing the research as it gave her much joy, but

As it says in the story, “Teaching I don’t enjoy at all. This is primarily a research university, and I only have four hours a week in front of a class, but it takes me almost a
There are many themes in the novel My Louisiana Sky by Kimberly Willis Holt. Through the events of Tiger’s life, the reader sees why differences make us who we are, why death is a part of life, and also that true friends will ask for nothing more than an individual’s companionship. As she grows, Tiger learns about life and all the difficulties it will bring, but she also learns that she will have friends who will be with her every step of the way. First of all, the author seems to make a point that people can sometimes find it hard to think that different is okay. In the novel, Tiger is often made fun of by Abby Lynn and her group of friends because her mother acts so out of place due to her condition.
In the short story "Two Fishermen," Morley Callaghan portrays three characters as appearing heinous despite their actual kind-hearted demeanor. Firstly, Smitty, the town's executioner. Due to hanging a well liked man, Thomas Delaney, and being the hangman, Smitty might seem like a cold-hearted individual, however, he is described as being " a mild harmless lookin guy"(65). Furthermore, Smitty knows he "ought to be ashamed"(68) about being the hangman. In addition to Smitty appearing different to his actual self, Thomas Delaney is considered, in the eye's of the law, a criminal despite trying to protect his wife.
In Once More To The Lake By E.B White, the narrator’s is a father who is having an internal struggle to try to stay in the past but soon realizes that he can’t and death is inevitable. The narrator begins the story by explaining that his father rented a camp on a lake in Maine for one month when he was a kid, but not the narrator himself has a kid as he takes him to the same lake after years of not going to it. The narrator then creates an illusion from the second that he arrives to the camp. His illusion is that everything is the same as when he was younger, and because of that he himself isn’t getting older either.
1) Analyzing - Evaluate E.B. White's use of description by writing a response that answers the following: do you feel you are the audience of White's piece? In E.B. White’s story, “ Once More to the Lake” he wrote the story as though he’s personally telling you about his life experience about him growing up going to the lake in Maine and now returning as an adult with his son. He speaks about intimate moments he had at the lake when he was younger and as he gets older it feels as though nothing has changed, it's as though he went back in time to his childhood. He also explains, in great detail, every sense he is re-experiencing as an older man.
Have you ever gotten mixed messages from people? In “The Ravine” by Graham Salisbury, Vinny, and his three teen friends are going to a ravine in Hawaii to swim and cliff dive. Two weeks and one day before, a boy went missing at this ravine. Vinny doesn’t want to go but his friends peer-pressured him into going even after his mother told him not too.
A separate peace by John Knowles is book that takes place at a boarding school and a big part of it is looking at how tragedy can change a characters personality. Gene Forrester the protagonist and narrator of the novel is a great example of this. At the beginning of the book he is envious of his best friend Phineas and will do anything to be the best, but as the book goes on and tragedy strikes all he feels is guilt. Before the tragedy of Finny breaking his leg gene is envious of him.
In this view, the teacher must have high expectations for the work of the students. These clearly high expectations can be seen in the teachers’ own words, but more important, I would argue that it is demonstrated by the challenging (requiring deep thinking) tasks that these teachers presented to their students. To be successful students in each of the classes in the book, a student had to work and put in effort. Passivity did not appear to be acceptable in any of these

In the late 1960's, segregation had just been outlawed in the United States after a strenuous, nearly 15 year long civil rights movement. Still, despite this great achievement, racism and white supremacy still existed in the South. These tensions are seen throughout Pat Conroy's memoir The Water is Wide, in which he shares his experience as a teacher on the extremely isolated Yamacraw Island. Here, a majority of his preteen students were severely undereducated African Americans, many of whom didn't even know the alphabet.
Ghuman captures her way of teaching by describing the teacher being the ““academic” instructor who stood or sat at a distance from” the students, and the students are “asked to refer to instructions written on the board or to listen carefully to what they said” (2009). From being a student myself, I personally do not find learning beneficial when it is simply told to me. Instead of reinforcing the traditional teaching methods, I believe that students need to be active learners. Most people learn best when they are part of the learning process, have a voice in the discussion and can evaluate and reflect on their own learning. Furthermore, I also found it difficult to prepare and lead a lesson that was appropriate for the age group, yet not too difficult.
Should Students Choose Their Own Teachers? A controversial issue argued by some is whether students should be allowed to choose their own teachers. Within an educational environment, teachers have different teaching strategies and methods. Moreover, students also learn differently and have different and specific needs when it comes to being educated.
He reminds the other dinner guests that it’s true what they say about teachers: Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach” (Mali, 2002). Teaching is a passion and most definitely a calling. I do admit, that sometimes people enter teaching with the wrong motives, however, in my experience those are not typically the teachers that last. I did not enter my teaching because I am a liberal or a conservative, or because I was going to make a great salary. I teach because I love teaching and I want to make a difference in the lives of children.
Throughout my training, I implemented various strategies for engaging students in small groups and rigorous lessons. My role as a teacher is to communicate effectively, be respectful, and have self-worth and confidence. I did fear making wrong choices throughout this field experience. I set high expectations the students to achieve high goals. Teaching to me opened doors to many students’ lives.
