In the early 1600’s British settlers colonized the east coast of North America forming a total of 13 colonies. These arising colonies began to grow and evolve into different societies despite being from the same region beforehand. One of the reasons that led to distinct separation among regions was social disjunctions. Others significant reasons include various economic incentives and political stance as well as religious motives. With varying social, economic, and religious disjunctions, the New England and Chesapeake regions both evolved into two distinct societies by the start of the 18’th century.

In the early 19th century many religious and racial groups migrated to the Americas due to persecution. From these groups formed the New England, Middle and Southern Colonies. Each set of colonies were based off of different natural resources and each allowed the regions to prosper. Whether they were proprietor, religious or royal colonies they each were original founded under the British government as a way to expand the country’s borders. In the end due to conflicts with neighboring Indians, different Religious groups, and later Britain itself.

In 1650 the English had established colonies in North America. The first colony founded by the English was in 1607 in Jamestown Virginia. The English fled England because of religious belief being forced on them, Plymouth Massachusetts was founded by the pilgrims in 1620 with the help of the natives. The colony grew very quickly. The two crops at the time were corn and tobacco, the corn kept the colony fed and the tobacco helped to fund the group.

Northern colonies started as just state all bunched into one. They are now there own separate states now. The northern colonies are now the states of Plymouth,Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and finally New Hampshire. Plymouth Colony: Plymouth colony was an English colonial venture in North America from the years of 1620 to 1691. The first settlement of the Plymouth Colony was at New Plymouth, a location previously surveyed and named by Captain John Smith.

The New England colonies were first founded in the last 16th to 17th century as a sanctuary for differing religious groups. New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones. The Chesapeake region, which is made up of the colonies of Maryland and Virginia, was founded by the British colonies for the purpose of farming. However, by the 1700’s, despite both being settled by Englishmen, New England and the Chesapeake region had developed differently.

Southern colonies society was built around their crops, slaves, and plantations. In the Northern colonies they built their society around religion and being fishing. There economy grew from fishing, mainly for with Cod. Religion played a huge role in the Northern colonies, it was a separation of church and state. The Middle colonies economy came from growing crops and fur trading with the Native Americans.

The New England families tend to travel together, they had a strong sense of community and really would watch out for one another like family. Education was important to the New England colony as so was religion and they were required to study the bible. The Southern Colonies were founded as an economic venture to create wealth where as for the New England colony were mainly about religious reformers and separatists. They were looking for a new way to praise God, that’s not to say that religion wasn’t important to the southern colonies because it was they just had a different way of going about it than the New England colonies. The religion in the southern colonies was more diverse.

Women cooked food and made the family’s clothing. The crops grown were meant just for the family, so the economy was dependant on other things. New England 's colonies economy was dependant on fishing, furs, and ship building. The New England colonies differences from the Chesapeake bay colonies shows the difference we still see right now in the northern states vs the southern states.

Slavery began long before the colonization of North America. This was an issue in ancient Egypt, as well as other times and places throughout history. In discussing the evolution of African slavery from its origins, the resistance and abolitionist efforts through the start of the Civil War, it is found to have resulted in many conflicts within our nation. In 1619, the first Africans in America arrived in Jamestown on a Dutch ship.

The colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia were a start of the new world for England. These were founded by similar people but, with their strikingly differences, grew into separate political, economic and social structures. Both settlements arose from over-crowdedness in England: people wanted a better life. Virginia was settled by men who were single and looking for opportunities and wealth. They were part of the Anglican religion.

In the southern colonies the main people that inhabited the area were Catholics and protestants. The southern colonies ended up becoming excessively dependent on a plantation company that required slavery. Slavery was not a great solution to the labor problem but because a large portion or people owned a lot slaves and since that ownership was viewed as their wealth they were loathed to give up those slaves without financial compensation. Slavery was allowed in New England but very few people owned slaves. The Northern Colonies decided to take the weakling way out.

Colonists who came to America differed greatly in backgrounds and settled for various reasons: Colonist in the New England Colony came to America primarily because they were religious reformers and separatist seeking a new way of life; the Middle Colony was inhabited by a tolerant and diverse group of people with different backgrounds; And the Southern Colony was mainly inhabited by English aristocrats, small farmers, and slaves. Because each colonial region inhabited different groups of colonists the social development differed greatly in each region. New England was founded on the Puritan faith and maintained a strong sense of faith, family, and community. New Englan was very strict on enforcing a strong sense Puritan religion, the lifestyle of colonist revolved around the puritan faith, so much so, it was referred to the "city upon a hill". Contrasting greatly with the New England Colony, the Middle Colony was greatly social and religiously diverse.

The two colonies differed politically. “God Almighty in his most holy and wise providence hath so disposed of the condition of mankind, [that]in all times some must be rich, some poor, some high and eminent in power and dignity, other mean and in subjection” (Doc. A).The New England colony was a representative democracy; they held town meetings. It placed emphasize on having poor and rich families because of the importance of an equal society with representation from all sectors of life. “We intend by God's grace, as soon as we can, with all convenient speed, to procure some Godly and faithful minister with whom we purpose to join in church covenant to walk in all the ways of Christ” (Doc. D).

England was the last of the large European empires to begin their exploration of the New World. Their desire to discover new land spawned from their need for raw goods that was currently threatening to throw their economy out of balance, their victory in the Anglo-Spanish War which gave them the courage to challenge Spain, their need to find unsettled land for their younger population and their want to spread Protestantism (Schultz, 32). English settlement of North America began in 1585 with Sir Walter Raleigh and his settlement of Roanoke. Roanoke did not succeed as a settlement but Raleigh learned that Spain’s conquistador model of quick riches was not a correct model for English success. In order to succeed, England would have to setup settlements based on a model of plantations and agriculture.

Most of the colonies in America were settled by the English, which makes them similar in many designs. However, there are a few aspects that differentiate between colonies, such as in the Chesapeake and New England regions. Reasons for settlement, religions, and geography all played an important role in the development of colonies in these regions. These conditions were natural and mostly subject to circumstances and conditions that were unchangeable. Nonetheless, no matter the modest causes, the effects were very substantial in helping to develop the uniqueness of each region.
