DBQ - Democracy in Colonial America Essay Democracy was a work in progress with democratic and undemocratic features in colonial America. A democratic feature of Colonial America would be, Control of the abuse of power. Control of the Abuse is where there was just too much power. In 1607, the first colonists arrived in the new world,today, known to us as America. This colony was the Jamestown colony. Eventually more colonists came and created bigger colonies like the massachusetts colony In 1774, upset by the boston tea party and other blatant acts british Parliament passed a law intended to punish the people of massachusetts for their resistance. This act was called the Coercive act.

In Colonial America there was Democratic and Undemocratic features within a work in progress. A democratic feature from Document #1- Maryland’s Act of Toleration is Individual or Human Rights- Rights all people have to believe in any form of christianity shall from now on will be in any way troubled. A undemocratic feature from Plan of a Slave Ship- Document #5 is equality. Equality is the state of being equal, especially in in status, rights, and opportunities. Where there’s valued equality and where people are free from unreason.

The English settled in Jamestown with the goal of striking rich, which they battled to meet in the first twenty years. The Virginia Company received a charter from King James I of England in hope of finding gold and possibly finding another route to the Indies, which also was in search of products and wealth. In fact, the company was only supposed to be in North America for a few years and then be liquidated, yet this stay was much longer. Subsequently, the beginning of Jamestown was dreadful as the colonists were susceptible to many dangers. Forty people died on the trip across the Atlantic in 1606-1607; in another voyage in 1609, the leaders died and their supplies were lost in a shipwreck off the Bermuda.

Life in Colonial America was different for all those involved, which were the settlers of Jamestown, Plymouth, and Massachusetts Bay colony.. Jamestown, Plymouth, and Massachusetts Bay had similarities and differences. They each had their own unique leaders, form of government, economics, and ways of life, although all the settlers in these colonies had a deep dependence on God.
