Being able to play a sport in college is a gift that not many people receive, it takes hard work and dedication, a thing that has not changed since the first games were played. Over the years college athletics has grown, since the inception of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) in 1906. The number of sports now allowed in the NCAA is twenty four and the number of schools who support each sport has grown by the thousands. College athletes compared today from fifty years ago have changed drastically because of how long they stay in college, wanting to be paid, and the different recruiting process.
What is the difference between four years and a year the obvious answer is three years, but for a college athlete that could mean the make or break of your career. In 1984 History’s greatest basketball player Michael Jordan Graduated from The University of North Carolina after spending four years, that was the norm for college

The recruiting process for a high school athlete in 1985 would only receive letters from colleges the start of their junior year, not allowed to have actual contact with coaches until then. This was harder on some athletes that could play in college but did not get the exposer needed. Consequently the number of college athletes were not high with a lot of the players missing the opportunity to play. Today a lot more athletes have the chance to be able to play college sports, with the technology it allows for more visibility of stats and easier access to videos giving more opportunities for athletes to gain exposure with colleges. The rules of recruiting has slightly changed no longer having to wait till your junior year to receive letters and contact from coaches. They technology does the recruiting for them instead of having to go watch players live they watch videos and look up stats online making it easier to find the right
After seven hours of school, three hours of clubs, and five hours of football practice, the college student did not have any time for any other activities. Quickly, he rushed out to get the mail, and as he went through the letters, two big envelopes stood out from the rest. He decided to open the light blue one first. As he pulled out the letter, a check with the number “6,000” was written on it. He had earned the only scholarship available in the school.
NCAA athletes took the NCAA to court. Ed O’Bannon, a former NCAA athlete, led the charge for the student athletes. O’Bannon argued that the athletes are being taken advantage of because the schools make millions off of the players’ likeness, meaning the schools make money on selling a jersey, or bobble head of the players and the players deserve some of that money and it should be put into a trust fund for the player. Judge Claudia Wilkin decided the O’Bannon case and gave the athletes everything they wanted in 2014, but in a court of repeals the ruling was reversed and the college just had to pay for the full cost of attendance at the university and did not have to pay for the trust of each athlete (Nocera). This was a small step for college
Most high school athletes across America share one common aspiration: play their sport at the next level in college. For a select number of fortunate athletes, that dream becomes a reality when they commit to a school and sign their letter of intent. But are they really fortunate? College athletics are oftentimes not as glamorous as one would think. The transition to college is not a walk in the park, but add a rigorous summer conditioning program, two-a-days everyday, and the pressures of coaches you have yet to impress, and you have a recipe for disaster.
The thesis in this text is clear and noticeable, it is “One of the most controversial questions; Should college athletes be paid?”. It is the second sentence, it states in the beginning what the author will be talking about. The central argument of the essay was why college athletes should not be paid. The author provides support for his opinion by stating some of NCAA’s rules. The author told an anecdote about when he was a college athlete.
What a lot of people do not realize is that a college sport is just the same a pro sport but with students. Playing a collegiate sport requires a lot of time and effort from a student. Athletes, spend on average, 43+ hours training or playing their sport. People, at most, work 40 hours a week. Athletes do not have time for a job but some are expected to be able to pay for food or expenses they might have such as, uniform fees, equipment fees, and all others that may apply.
Athletes can't keep up with sports if they are not healthy. College athletes also won't have any time getting a job because of all their training and studying. Athletes have gym too which also cost money.most colleges do not require gyms so they do not have them. Without these things athletes will begin to stop being healthy and break down during practice.
College athletes put in a lot of time, effort, and work into the sport they’ve played since they were young, but they aren’t getting paid for it. These student athletes deserve to be paid because they put in countless hours of hard work and balance sports with school work. The first reason athletes in college do deserve to be compensated is because they don 't have time to fit in work with a school and athletic schedule. College athletes don’t have time to get a real job. Student athletes have a very busy schedule, they don’t have time to fit in a job.
NCAA has various views on college athletes getting paid. On NCAA.org, they push for more success in academics than in athletics. School work will be put before the time spent on the court to ensure that they know their main purpose for going to that specific college, according to NCAA. For the people who like to give their opinions on the situation, the past years have seen good days and bad days in where as people, even fans, think that college athletes are somehow not given enough benefits. NCAA states, Most of the money made off of the athletic program doesn’t go to the people that actually make the profits rise.
After graduating from High School one may choose to further his or her education through college. People do this for many reasons. Some people do it for professional benefits, while others do it for sports athletics. This paper will be focusing on those who do go to college for athletic benefits. Specifically, this is focusing on how these college athletes do not get paid and why they should be paid.
For example, Chris Starks was a promising college athlete that played for Appalachian State University. Starks was a track star and football player. During his freshman year his football career was ended by a knee injury. After this occurred Starks had to transfer to Savannah. Starks had to transfer because his family could not pay the for the cost of the medical bills and the college payments.
Why don't college athlete get paid? Many people say they should others say elsewise. I'm aganist for paying college athletes. College atheltic programs can't afford to pay athletes. Playing college sports is a privilege.
“Nine football coaches will be paid at least $1,000,000 in overall compensation in 2000....” College players should get paid because they have a chance to help out their families while they are in college. Athletes should at least get paid just like coaches but not as much as coaches. It wouldn’t be fair for college athletes to not get paid because if they get paid it gets them ready for the pro’s. The athletes should at least have a chance to have just a little fun.
“Colleges and the NCAA generate more than $10.8 billion per year off of athletics” and yet, student athletes do not get paid at all for their hard work. They put in a great amount of time, effort, and work into being a student athlete. Being a college athlete is exceptionally laborious and can be both mentally and physically exhausting. There’s far more that goes into being a collegiate athlete than most individuals realize. Many people just see these athletes as the average student that in addition, gets to do what they love as an extracurricular.
Colleges are scouting or looking at kids from the age of ten years old. For March Madness (college basketball tournament) a student athlete would miss up to six days of class that they would have to make up later on, due to traveling and having to be with the team. Football player dedicate 43.3 hours of their own life to college sports. Whether it’s going to the weight room, film sessions, or just putting some type of work for the team. It is also more common for athletes who play football or basketball to go pro than in any other college sport.
