The Civil War had the most dead men ever in US history. No ordinary person would want to be a part of that gruesome war. Why would Texans volunteer to fight in it then? The main cause of the Civil War was slavery, which was a huge controversy between the North and South.

The case of Dredd Scott vs Sanford and its ruling by the Supreme Court had significantly influenced the subject of slavery. The effect of the decision declared that no black, enslaved or free, was allowed to claim citizenship in the US. Slaves were considered property and had no right to consider themselves individuals. The Dredd Scott case decision specified that Congress wasn’t allowed to abolish slavery in US territories.

During the election of 1860, Lincoln had run for president and won. He was from the North, and believed that the country’s government would not be able to endure half slave and half free. His intent was to end slavery, or at the very least, stop it from spreading. The South didn’t agree with his views, and decided that they wouldn’t live in a slavery-free country. April 12, 1861. Confederate forces fired shots at the fort Sumpter and Union troops surrendered sparking the Civil War. Though, how did it come to this? As one can see, evidence shows the primary cause of the Civil War was slavery because of the many more slaves than free blacks, the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 fought over slave or free states, and Dred Scott fought for his freedom from slavery.

The Civil War was a battle between the north and south that neither side had anticipated would be so long and difficult. This long lasting war involved several battles that led to thousands of casualties on both sides. A total of more than six hundred twenty thousand American men perished. The objective of the Civil War was to abolish slavery from the north’s perspective, or to keep the southern lifestyle as the southerners justification to fight. The winning side of this war would change the history of slaves, and whether or not it still exists to this day.

The Civil War was the result of uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states. When Abraham Lincoln won the election in 1860, as the first Republican president on a platform promising to keep slavery out of the territories, seven slave states in the deep South seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America. Military during the Civil War was off, but equalled out in terms of stats, North having better leadership and South having better weapons. As the United States expanded westward, two new territories were created from the issue of slavery in the United States. The U.S. government let the two new territories decide whether or not to allow slavery.

If the enduring vision of America is embodied in the Declaration of Independence's statements about equality and universal rights to justice, liberty, and self-fulfillment, how much progress toward those ideals had blacks and women made by 1877?

For a long time many northerners were opposed to the idea of slavery. To the north slavery was morally wrong. It wasn’t that they felt that they were equal humans because many northerners were still racist, but the slaves were taking away jobs that could be used a paying jobs for whites. The people up North especially felt that the immigrants coming in could go south and use the jobs on the plantations and stay away from their northern factory jobs. Another big debate which made the north dislike slavery was that whenever a new territory was acquired the southern slave’s states would want it to expand slavery while the north wanted it to expand their businesses.

Finally, the opposition are those people who consist of arrogant and inconsiderate human beings who believed slavery was ok and that it would greatly help boost the means of production for the country and help those people with large plantations and business to get jobs and other tasks done. Many officials, leaders, and individual owners did not submit to degradation or in other words they believed that white males were of greater superiority than any African American person. This way of life or belief created a misconception of what the U.S. was supposed to be all about and made many other countries look down on the U.S. because of the way they were using practically free labor. It would have been very different if these laborers were treated fair and did work because everyone needs a job to support their

Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .

People in the southern states were very unhappy to have a president that opposed slavery. The southern states began to form an army. They demanded all the United States soldiers to leave the southern forts. Abraham Lincoln told the southerners that he would let slavery continue in the south to keep the United States together. On January 1, 1863 Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation abolishing slavery in the United States.

The South was offended by the North. The North had prominent economy. Northern states based their economy on trade and manufacture goods. Document 3 states, “ the North’s economy came to depend more on trade than on agriculture.” Document 5 also inform how cities in the North grew promptly, the railway system, and the shipping industry.

Evidence exists in the form of picures, slave narratives and slave codes. People continue to argue that slaves outnumbered owners which is somewhat true but fail to understand why slaves could not. Slaves were bound by social, political and economic motives possessed by owners.

The United States, along with other European countries who still upheld the institution of slavery, feared a good example as they saw an independent country of former slaves as a threat. For this victory for Blacks would influence peril for slave owners, as slaves within these countries would feel even more inspired to rebel themselves as a way of gaining their basic human rights. Especially in the U.S where ninety four percent of its population during that time were slaves.
