Chino Gender Roles In American Culture

A stereotype is used to categorize a group of people. Stereotypes are similar to racism, because stereotyping is a type of racism. Assuming everyone of a certain race acts the same is extremely racist. For example For example assuming an Asian person is very smart is a stereotype and is racist. Stereotyping can also be sexist.

It is often hard to be yourself when other people make fun of certain things that relate towards oneself. In Gene Luen Yang’s book titled, “American Born Chinese,” it addresses the stereotypes that Asians living in America in the 2000s faced, as well as the unhappiness that stems from complete social conformity. “American Born Chinese,” is a graphic novel that contains three seemingly different stories about three distinct characters, the Monkey King, Jin Wang, and Danny, which ultimately connects at the end. Jin Wang struggles to navigate school while facing bullying by racist stereotypes that persist. The Monkey King struggles to make others accept his new identity.

The collective autobiography edited by Alice Pung “Growing Up Asian in Australia” and the short story collection written by Maxine Beneba Clarke, “Foreign Soil” both illustrate the impact of family and cultural expectations on one’s identity. Both authors emphasise how the personal desires and beliefs of individuals brought about by the expectations imposed by their family, their culture and the society on them can serve as a motivation to change and establish their identity. The desire for acceptance and love can motivate an individual to satisfy a certain expectation. Similarly, pressure brought by individuals around a character may bring them to feel obligated to meet standards.

The outcome of the recent 2016 presidential election has sparked fear about the future in those who aren’t white, male, and Christian. As a result of this fear, a lot of the people who don’t fit in with this group are trying to change who they are to avoid confirming the negative stereotypes some Americans believe about other cultures. In American Born Chinese, a graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, the character Jin, a Chinese-American boy, struggles to distance himself from the stereotypes pushed on him by the students and teachers at his new school. In this paper I will discuss the culture of Hispanic Americans, whom are sometimes called Latinos. Five demographic characteristics will be identified, which will follow their beliefs on family, education, and society. Although this culture has seen many challenges in today’s society there are many opportunities for advantages, and new traditions. Culture awareness is an excellent way to engage in our students and families lives. As teachers, we will see a diverse group of races and ethics, while in the classroom.

Minorities have made significant strides towards equality in American society. In America the minority groups are being stereotype due to their ethnicity. This is the assumption that the latina women are all domestic and that is all they do. There are many different stereotypes of the latina women, such as them beings cooks, waitresses, house cleaners, and taking care of the children. People think that they are all the same and have no other talents or responsibilities. People make assumptions just by the color of their skin or their race. They do not take the time to get to know the person before they start assuming things.

Being Hispanic to me means being a warrior at heart. A warrior whose heart is made of fire and stone, whose blood pulses for the need for a better life. Hispanics are a force of love. We love our families so much we work two to three jobs just to make sure our families can thrive, even if it means not being able to spend time with their families. Parents love their children so much they lie to them, saying that they aren’t hungry when they actually are, or that they aren’t tired when in reality their bones are screaming in pain.

The traditional Cuban family structure is patriarchal, a dominant male and a passive female is common, but mainly among older generations of family. The new family is more open to changes, education for all, especially women, was a big step in the participation of women in the workforce, gender equality, respect to marriage, divorce, household responsibilities, and decision-making. Cuban American women with acculturation were ready to join work outside the home and contribute, like men, to the social and economic growth of the family. Cubans, both on the island and Cuban Americans, the family, la familia, means support, strength, identity and heritage.

In the essay “The Chinese in All of Us”, written by Richard Rodriguez, shows how America has become a melting pot. People in America have mixed their cultures instead of being their own culture from the country they are from. Now a days, America has grown to be a country that includes many different cultures. In a usual family, there are set roles. A father, mother, and children. Stereotypically, each role is supposed to have a set job- the father is in charge of the family, making the rules, the mother cooks and helps the children, and the children play. This stereotype is slowly changing throughout the years, and some could argue that it is different for their family. One thing that should be true in all families, is that the parents are good role models for their children, leading them in the right direction in life.
