Chinese Immigrants: The Chinese Gold Rush

Chapter six examines the anti-Chinese sentiment with the emerging class antagonism and turmoil between white capitalists and workers. The unwelcomed arrival of Chinese immigrants brought along their own social organizations such as the huiguan, fongs, and tongs. These types of social organizations secured areas of employment and housing for Chinese immigrants in California. This social structure that was unknown to Anglos led them to also categorize Chinese on the same level as Indians by depicting them as lustful heathens whom were out to taint innocent white women. These images were also perpetuated onto Chinese women, thus, also sexualizing them as all prostitutes.

During the time period of 1867 to 1945 the immigrant experience in Canada was different from today. There were many groups such as the Chinese and Jews that were no accepted by the Canadian people by 1945 the rules had changed and there was acceptance towards immigrants. In 1900 there were only 23,000 Chinese people in Canada today there are 1,487,000 which makes up for 3.9% of the Canadian population. This was because before 1923 Chinese immigrants were not welcome in Canada for a Chinese Immigrant to live in Canada they would need to pay a fifty dollar head tax.

During the gold rush many Americans cross the country to get to California. Many of whom died along the way. Because of this there should be a memorial to remember them by. For without them America wouldn’t be as it is today.

At first people did not believe the stories of large sums of gold in California, but slowly people from all over the world began immigrating to California, even Mexicans. By 1849, "the non-native population of the California [...] was [about] 100,000.”(The Gold Rush of 1849) Before, it was only about 1, 000. Two billion dollars worth of gold was found in California at this time. The gold Rush peaked in 1852.

Go to America, get a job and send us money and one day” she coughs and when she can function, she continues, “ one day, we will join you.” he grabbed my trembling hands in her own soft, warm ones as I asked her, “ What about the kids, it’s not safe here for them?” She motioned for me to bend lower to her and she whispered gently into my ear, “They will be fine, I will protect them.

Chinese immigrants came to the U.S for the california gold rush, this event provided many jobs, hope for a good future, and hope to give a good life to their families. Nativists

Gold rushes in Australia, Peru and California attracted hundreds to thousands of immigrants, from places such as China and Africa. Almost all of the immigrants were treated terribly, but the hemigrants had to deal with this discrimination

The Gold Rush, beginning in 1848 and ending in 1855, was a period in American history which opened the doors of opportunity to a new group of immigrants, the Chinese. The discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill, California, in 1848 was the cause of mass Chinese immigration that would last for decades to come. When James Marshall discovered gold in 1848, there were fifty-four recorded Chinese in California, this number quickly rose to 116,000 by 1876. Most immigrants who came to the U.S had high expectations that they would find wealth but once they arrived they realized their expectations weren’t what they expected. Although, they were disappointed in not finding wealth the conditions in which the U.S was in by the late 1800s were still a lot better than the places they all had left behind to come. The majority of the immigration population anticipation was to find profitable jobs and opportunities. When the large numbers of immigration were migrating to the U.S, it was during the “Gilded Age”, which was the prime time for the country’s expansion of industrialization. This rapid expansion of new industries led to the need of workers which motivated people from other countries to come to

From about 1870 - 1900, about 12,000 immigrants fled to the United States. They fled for a range of reasons. Some of these include social, economical, political, and social. The Chinese arrived around the time of the California Gold Rush. They arrived along the shores.

The author argues in this chapter that Chinese families were unjustly separated in America because the husbands needed work and Chinese woman were not allowed into America. A specific piece of evidence that the author uses to support his case is the men who looked for loopholes in the law, attempting to bring their families from China to America. Ch. 7

First Response The California Gold Rush began on Jan 1848. The founder of its first majestic gold was James W. Marshall. That was the new, daring adventure for many Americans who held hope, and optimism. By the 1850’s there was a large population of 300,000 newcomers that ventured out and settled in California.

The California Gold Rush is one of the most known gold rushes in the U.S. The phenomenon was started by James Marshall when he found gold in the American River and he said “My heart thumped for I knew it was gold.” Because of his findings the California Gold Rush was born in 1848, then died seven years later in 1855. During these seven years California accumulated over 300,000 people that left their homes to mine for gold.

The California Gold Rush was a rush of people in search of gold in California. The gold was discovered in the Sacramento Valley in early 1848 which sparked the gold rush. The rush was a huge influence in how America was shaped into what it is today. It shaped California into what it is today. Without this gold rush California would be like it is today but it would have taken way more years and it wouldn’t be such a diversely populated state.
