As time has gone, psychologists have looked into cultures and have found that culture has many layers to it including clothing, food, and other meanings. While many people believe that culture is the same as nationality or race, it is actually defined as the information shared by a group of people across multiple generations. This means through time, these cultures have evolved, shared common similarities, and built off of each other. Everyone, from birth, has culture in them already as the way they cry can be separate than a baby from across the world. So, culture has an influence on the way we act, communicate, and think from day one.
Structure-oriented studies are comparisons of relationships among culture and how they interpret a particular

This is evident in the “Cultural Psychology Part 1” video as it chose to compare the differences between the Asian and Western European/American cultures and the dimensions each live by. This video showed that the more Asian culture choose to live more collectivist or working as one and having a we mentality. The American/Western European chose to live by the individualistic mindset or the belief that one can only look after themselves or their immediate family. Furthermore, in the article “Communication and Relationship Satisfaction in Chinese, Western, and Intercultural Chinese–Western Couples,” it used the cross-cultural research to indicate the way that people communicate in intimate relationships. The research conducted resulted in the Chinese culture showing their intimate partner love by keeping it inside and restrained from expressing emotions with communication. With European couples, love is expressed more verbally and frequently because otherwise low relationship satisfaction can …show more content…
This is a great opportunity to look into a culture, find the significant differences, and explore more about what the culture has to offer to the world. Plus, when you enter into these cultures and really get embedded into them, you will find yourself getting a little less ethnocentric, or thinking your culture is superior. Collectivistic and individualistic societies play a role in this type of testing as they have two different views as to how they want to participate in everyday situations. For example, Asia, a collectivist society, might think about the needs of peers. The United States being an individualistic society, have the mindset just thinking about themselves more and their needs. Hypothesis testing determines why the two contrast societies like the demand for innovation from America rather than
Love is a universal emotion. At some point in their lifetime, people will experience some form of love, whether it be romantic, platonic, or familial; however, not everyone experiences love the same way. There are many factors that contribute to the way a person views love, receives love, and expresses love: their family dynamic, past relationships, and most importantly, their culture. One of the factors that most influences how a person receives and expresses romantic love is the culture and society surrounding them. In Junot Diaz’s
Communication battles between the sexes is the issue addressed in “Sex, lies and Conversations: Why Is So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other?” by Deborah Tannen. The thesis of this essay is “how can women and men have such different impressions of communication in marriage” (404). Tannen’s main claim is women and men communicate differently and makes it harder to stand one another and that this behavior starts at an early age being children and being treated differently. She argues “the world desperately needs cross-cultural understanding” (408). Women blame men for not being in touch with their feelings and men blame women for not being assertive enough (407).
Jaleah-Pink Without culture we as a community will not have a sense of touch with our identity. Culture brings us life and ways how we see the world in our view. Culture is based on everything you were taught and lived through when you was growing up examples are like playing sports, being respectful to others, being taught from what is right and what is wrong. Culture impacts our lives in many ways and in different circumstances. I strongly agree that culture will be a part of everyone 's lives for generations.
In the Hmong culture, parents and children do not communicate with one another on a daily basis. Traditionally, Asian families may not be as verbal and openly affectionate toward their children as families are expected to be in a standard American family (CACF, 2011). In a YouTube video called “Asian Parents React to I Love You” is a video about college Asian students away from home, discussing about the last time they said the words “I Love You” to their parents. The video showed 3 out of 5 people never had said “I love you to their parents before. One of the male students said “I never said I love you to my parents, and that’s probably because they never said it to me, so love was more shown through actions (2014).”
The material and nonmaterial items in both cultures, and how has one nation’s culture influenced another. What might a sociologist hypothesis be and what type of research would they use. To start off with, let’s look at the two cultures that are in conflict. The main cultures is made up of two
The ways our culture inform the world are very diverse and bold. Because all cultures are important to each and every one of us, thus our culture heavily influences each and everyone and every culture around us. Culture is all around us no matter where you go, it will always with you. It has a massive impact on each and every one of us. Our culture influences our view of almost everything we see and hear in the world.
America, much like China also has a long history leading up to the build of the United States Government. Although America’s history isn’t as long there where many historic events that have happened to create government we have today. From arriving to America on boats and settling with Native Americans to The American Revolutionary War, the independence of America to the first elected president, George Washington to the build up of our national government including the executive, legislative and judicial branch. America is a Federal Republic, “a country that is governed by elected representatives and by an elected leader [such as a president] rather than by a king or queen” (Merriam Webster 2017). As of January 20th, Donald Trump is our 45th president, representing the Republican Party.
Every day we use our culture. Whether it be to argue claims, express opinions, or make decisions, culture plays a part in each area. Culture is who we are, one’s identity, its extent is enormous over our views and actions. A person grows up surrounded with culture at a young age. This can affect how they learn and what they learn.
Each one needs to find comprise and give in to each other’s way of communicating. Unfortunately the problem we have today is neither one knows what their partner is looking for when communicating. When both parties are able to understand each other needs they will see it as a “cross-cultural communication…to understand the problem and forge solutions without blaming either party” (Tannen 1990). Once they can see each other interpretation of being understood they can open a new chapter in their life they can move on to the next step in their
Culture is the building block for life. It sets society's standards, it sets our own standards, and everything we know is all because of our culture. Culture is a way of thinking, a way of behaving and learning. We express our opinions based upon our beliefs, and define ourselves by what aspects of our culture we choose to show. Culture's impact on someone's perspective of others and the world is greater than its other influencers because it can change how you interact with people, your ability to change, and your opinions of the world.
These different societies can be compared because in a certain way they are the
She emphasizes the recognition of “cross-cultural” communication is beneficial to repair the conversational issues (Tannen 264). She proposes couples to improve their relationship by learning differences, adjusting conversational styles, and changing attitude. Learning differences is crucial to couples at the beginning of improvement, which helps couples to achieve mutual acceptance. Ideally, couples change their communication patterns according to their partners’ preference.
In the exogamous culture, the effective and interpersonal communication is the main route that provides help to the couple in order to develop the self-revelation and rapport where the cultural pressure and external factors do not influence the outcomes and results of the dance. There are two most important steps of the wheel theory of love which includes fulfillment of intimacy and the mutual dependence (Strong et.al, 2013).
Cultural Differences and Conflict for Marital Satisfaction by Tiffany G. Renalds studied how Asian women and Caucasian men attain a successful marriage through communication. In the findings of the interview the author conducted with nine couples in her thesis, three major factors affecting communication within intermarriages are language fluency, high-context and low-context communication, and family. Since these Asian women were not well versed or fluent with the English language at first, their confidence was affected. This may also have an impact with them not being able to interact well with other people and also create misunderstandings. As they spend more time in that country and learn more about the language and culture, they slowly
Everyone around the world has different beliefs, behaviors, objects and religion that are common for a particular society or a group of people who enjoys shared values and thus gives positive contributions to the society. This is called Culture. These are carried on by the people from generation by generation. It is the particular view point, customs and beliefs that discern one culture from another. It is transferred from one generation to another through language, material objects, and daily rituals.
