The Progressive Era The progressive era was most significant to African Americans for the opportunities to emigrate to Northern cities as the advent of new manufacturing processes and growth of industry meant there were more opportunities for African Americans. This is the main reason why Tianna decided to move her family to Detroit. She moved in order to work in a factory that belonged to Henry Ford. She thought things up North would be easier for African Americans and a way to be more self-sufficient.

he Progressive Era was when Americans were getting more rights and our country’s economy was changing for the better. There were also people called muckrakers who helped expose the truth about were the poor immigrants of America were living and what the meat making industry was really like. There was also a lot child labor happening which was when children worked in terrible working conditions and didn’t get paid as much as adults did. The senators at the time of the suffrage movement were usually the corrupt business owners of america who would use trusts and monopolies to keep their businesses going. Women were also fighting to have the same amount of rights as men did during this time.

Post civil war and reconstruction era was supposed to be a time to strengthen the country and finally create a home for all genders, races, religions, etc. However, the treatment of newly emancipated slaves did not change. Strict codes and laws were implemented to keep them enslaved. Specifically, Jim Crow Laws and Black Codes made it harder for “free” African American people to live a life that America once promised. These harsh environments led to the philosophies of Washington and DuBois.

Progressiveness of African American Rights in America It is a common belief that after the Civil War had ended, African Americans had become free and became apart of society with the rest of America. However, not only did many slaves not gain freedom until months after the war had ended, but discrimination of African Americans was still heavily prominent in American society. This gave rise to many inspirational African American figures such as Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois that spread their ideals on how to solve the issue. This debate grew rapidly in the early late 1800’s when a man by the name of Booker T. Washington had many ideas for the future of African American rights.

During the Industrial Revolution while the United States economy boomed it was at the expense of the underprivileged lower class. Florence Kelley was a prominent figure during this tumultuous time who brought light to issues such as women's rights, and child labor. She spoke to various conventions including the National American Woman Suffrage Association about these issues in an attempt to spark change. Specifically at this event she discusses the topic of child labor and calls women to action even though they cannot yet vote. Kelley utilizes logos, imagery, and theoretical examples to convince these women to petition and spread the ideas for preventative legislation surrounding child labor.

Child labour laws did come to exist, but during 1900 to 1920 they were “purely a state authority.” So they did not achieve national recognition. As for civil rights, W.E.B. DuBois and other African-Americans “fought gladly and to the last drop of blood” for America, but were repented with “gloats in lynching, disfranchisement, caste, brutality and devilish insult”. (document I) Eventually later child labour laws and civil rights would be achieved at the national level, but progress can take time.

Many government officials were involved in attempting to suppress the African American race. The African American race showed persistence and tenacity in fighting for their rights. Most African Americans in this timeframe were born in the United States therefore they should have been given the same rights. We cannot deny that rights and freedoms were given to African Americans that allowed them to stand up for their rights. Many changes did occur and laws passed as a result of this.

Child labor during the 18th and 19th century did not only rapidly develop an industrial revolution, but it also created a situation of difficulty and abuse by depriving children of edjucation, good physical health, and the proper emotional wellness and stability. In the late 1700 's and early 1800 's, power-driven machines replaced hand labor for making most manufactured items. Many of America 's factories needed a numerous amount of workers for a cheap salary. Because of this, the amount of child laborers have been growing rapidly over the early 1800s.

Child labor was a great problem in the Industrial Revolution. Factory owners usually hired women and children rather than men. They said that men expected higher wages, and they suspected that they were more likely to rebel against the company. Women and children were forced to work from six in the morning to seven at night, and this was when they were not so busy. They were forced to arrive on time and they couldn’t fall behind with their work because if they did they were whipped and punished.

Child labor. A topic widely frowned upon, may be beneficial when executed properly. Employing children can possibly provide stability and safety to a child, and opportunities for their communities to advance. In its simplest form, child labor can be beneficial to communities and families when laws and rights are respected. Keeping children off of the streets is a benefit having to do with child labor.
