Communication is loosely outlined as sending or receiving messages that contain meaning and these messages often contain thoughts, ideas, opinions, feelings and information. While these messages can be communicated verbally through spoken word they are also communicated non-verbally through mannerisms such as body language, eye contact and gestures. As verbal communication coexists alongside non-verbal communication it can impact how the information is interpreted. Information can be interpreted very differently by subtle differences in mannerisms. Firstly an individual should identify early signs of possibly problematic challenging situations and report accordingly. For example if an individual does not understand what task is asked of them they should seek advisement of someone who will be able to understand the information. Secondly they should also identify actual constraints to effective communication and resolve using appropriate communication strategies and techniques. Argyles communication cycle When communicating with one another people must come to terms by trying to have an understanding of what the other person is trying to say. Communication is a circular process in which each person must have an understanding of one another’s viewpoint, they must also make sure that they are being understood.

The two key topics in class in the last weeks, for me. Two of the most relevant topics developed in the last weeks were: non-verbal communication and the barriers to communication. Everytime we communicate with another person or group of people, we have to take into account some factors other than what we are actually saying that can affect how the message is going to be received: body language, tone, intonation, facial expressions, and others; this is what we understand for non-verbal communication. As we saw in class “55% of communication is body language, 38% is the tone of voice, and 7% is the actual words spoken.”

In our reading Business and Professional Communication chapter 2, it states that “nonverbal communication can lead to better interactions between doctor and patients as well as improve the diagnoses of illnesses.” This means that doctors and patients are often judging one another on the basis of their non-verbal actions.
