In the article There was no Offensive-Defensive Confederate Strategy Donald Stroker wanted to prove that Vandiver, a celebrated historian and professor was wrong about the strategy used in the Confederacy during the civil war. Stroker brought up points such as “The biggest problem is Vandiver’s first words: “His strategy was the offensive-defensive.” At no point does Vandiver present any evidence that Davis ever decided to prosecute such a strategy.” (Stroker, pg. 8) Stroker had jumped from explaining how the offensive-defensive could have possibly been a strategy in the Confederacy, to proving how it was not an option, and how there was no evidence to show that it was an option.

Otis also argued that if a government is found “incorrigible” , the “government should be disposed by the people.” Otis also argued that parliament deprives the colonists of their most essential rights as free man because of all the taxes parliament was enacting. But Otis did believe that “parliament has the authority to make laws for the general good of the colonies.”

John was seen by the public as a nice guy, but what made him special was that he could take any group of guys and get consistent wins. Wooden severed in the Navy as a lieutenant surfing World War ll. After serving in the war, he took the coaching job as a basketball for the University of California. Wooden took the job while no one would step up to the task. Since there was an age limit of 18,many young boys had to lie about their ages or run away and sign with a fake name so their parents won’t find them. Many school teachers and fathers would sometimes let the children join the army. When a person signs up for the army,they have to play a role such as a musician,soldier,or powder boy.

Life for the Union Soldier was not only brutal on the battlefield, but the camp life for a Union soldier was just as cruel. With the lack of personal hygiene, unsavory and repugnant food, and the shortage of clothing made living, a very difficult thing to do. Growth in the number of people with diseases was also a contributing factor to the massive amounts of death within the camp and as well as the post-battle wounds that often left either a man with one less limb or put in a mental institution. A Union Soldier’s life during the Civil War was cruel and horrific during their stay at the camps.

Two different people, who both endured slavery were continuously being knocked down, were able to achieve greatness and respect. Sadly, both of these upstanding men bore slavery, they had extremely incompatible experiences in slavery. Booker was freed in his teenage years and did not bear heinous and sinister acts against him; on the other hand Fredrick witnessed and withstood twisted actions that no one deserves.

In today’s society, we have former National Football League(NFL) quarterback Collin Kapernick who’s no longer in the NFL because of his protest against racial inequality. However, many people believe he is no longer in the NFL because of his talent. Kapernick led the 49ers to Super Bowl 47. Although they didn’t win, he threw for 302 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 62 yards. Therefore, he didn’t get kicked out of the league because he wasn’t good enough, but for sitting down during the national anthem.

Chris McCandless was in his early 20’s, he was the kind of that guy that wanted to learn and experience life without all of the material things. He wanted to be independent from his parents and friends so Chris did something that would be insane for most of us humans but to him, it wasn’t. He went into the wild of Alaska for months, in fact, McCandless even thought he could make it out alive at the end of his journey. As a matter of fact, he was known as being a risk taker and enjoyed being out and about in the nature side of the world. Many would believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild to purposely kill himself; however, I myself believe that McCandless did not do it purposely.

While the effort of America was important in winning the war, there was a lot of discrimination and prejudice against blacks, Native Americans, women, and homosexuals within the military. The men who fought in the war saw terrible conditions and many had mental breakdowns. This chapter in the book explains the deaths that many soldiers witnessed and how many men became separated from humanity. This caused many soldiers to become insane. The final two chapters in the book talk about changes in the American society throughout the war and the results from the war.

The praises that you receive shouldn’t be based on the mere fact that you join but maybe for those who actually wants to serve and protect. In contrast, he says “Make that choice without looking back to see the cheering faces of those who tell you your duty is to do what they are not doing for purposes you may not know nor share” (Gillman 680). None the less, the author let the reader know that these young men and women risk their own lives for purposes which may not be of any value to themselves or the country. As a result, those purposes doesn’t deserve the praises that are

In the winter, Washington took his troops to Valley Forge, which was 18 miles from Philadelphia. At this time, Valley Forge was a difficult place to live for the Patriots. It was a struggle but if I were a Patriot in Valley Forge fighting for Washington’s Army, I wouldn’t quit. I won’t quit for three big reasons; yes I know there were a lot of sick soldiers but not as much as dying soldiers, another thing is the conditions were horrible, but there were many brave soldiers who stuck with it, and stayed with Washington, lastly I do not want to be a “summer soldier” because freedom is valuable so it is worth fighting for.

It took just forty five days for United States citizens to acquiesce their rights to freedom and privacy for the sake of safety following the events of September 11, 2001. Forty five days is how long it took the United States Congress to pass a law that gave up the very concept of liberty upon which this country is founded.
