THEORIES OF INTELLIGENCE INTRODUCTION Throughout history, numerous researchers have suggested different definitions regarding intelligence and that it is a single, general ability, while other researchers believed that the definition of intelligence includes a range of skills. Spearman (general intelligence), Gardner (multiple intelligence) and Goleman (emotional intelligence) have all looked into further research regarding intelligence, where 3 different theories were formed regarding what intelligence is and how it should be defined. The two factors include the G factor and the S factor. The G factor refers to the general cognitive abilities that are measured in individuals when completing different tasks. However, the S factor refers to the more specific abilities that the individuals use to complete the different tasks. Advantages/strengths of Charles Spearman’s theory: 1. The G factor can be measured by an IQ test 2. The G factor is a good indication of school performance Disadvantages/weakness of Charles Spearman’s theory: 1. The backlash and criticism regarding how the G factor only measures General Intelligence 2. The G factor doesn’t take into account other various activities such as motor abilities, perception and musical abilities. HOWARD GARDNER: MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE Multiple Intelligence: Howard Gardner (1943-current) originally identified and stated that there are 7 (later 9) specific types of intelligence. Body Kinesthetic: an individual’s ability to move an object skillfully and the coordination to move their body. Musical: an individual’s interpretation of tone and pitch including the understanding of rhythm and harmony. Visual/Spatial: an individual’s ability to judge distance as well as their ability regarding high order thinking such as understanding mazes and maps. Intrapersonal: an individual’s understanding of one’s self such as controlling their thoughts which can be further specified into strengths and weaknesses. Advantages/strengths of Howard Gardner’s theory: 1. Helps to explain that an individual has a variety of different understandings in different types of multiple intelligence. 2. The theory was based upon educational evidence and case studies. Disadvantages/weaknesses of Howard Gardner’s theory: 1. Doesn’t explain why some individuals are more intelligent than others. 2. Controversy over whether the seven specific types of intelligences are actually intelligences or whether they are abilities (such as musical, body-kinesthetic, interpersonal and intrapersonal). Is intelligence simply book smarts, an understanding of facts, or the ability to graduate with honors from a prestigious university? Or is intelligence something much deeper and personal? Authors David Foster Wallace and Mike Rose both address the topic of intelligence in their writing, and they speak to this very question.
The definition that appeals to me the most is the definition by Robert Sternberg. I agree that there are different intelligence and not just a general one like Charles Spearman has said. On the other hand, I always believe that there are always not too many either and that is why I agree with Robert Sternberg’s definition more than Charles Spearman and Howard Gardner’s definitions. I can agree with his definition that our society can live without certain intelligence like “musical intelligence.” I would also have to say that “successful intelligence” is more important for our society than others because I personally believe that successful intelligence is what strives our society to a better future and we need more of it.
Intelligence is what gets us by everyday; it gets us jobs and helps to provide for ourselves and others. I'm not saying you need to be the smartest person ever to be successful, but you at least have to be smart enough. Gladwell mentions that "Langan’s IQ is 30 percent higher than Einstein’s. But that doesn’t mean Langan is 30 percent smarter than Einstein. That’s ridiculous.

In today’s society people often correlate test scores and percentages to how intelligent a person is. Although, I believe intelligence is also a mix of experiences, I strive to control what people judge me on, which is calculated numbers.
What do you think it means to be intelligent? Being intelligent means having self-awareness and understanding, using logic and critical thinking, and having the ability to learn. This is shown in the novel by Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing, John Stienbecks novella, Of Mice and Men, and Richard Connell’s fictional short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”. In the book Where the Crawdads Sing, Kya uses her intelligence all throughout her life to survive on her own in the marsh.
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it’s stupid.” Einstein's words are crucial to understanding how important it is to use your intelligence in the proper way. Einstein realized that everyone has more than one kind of intelligence, and if we don’t use them in a positive way we would be better off if we didn’t have them at all. Your intelligences are a gift and if they aren’t used properly, they may be harming others.
The definition of intelligence I got from the book was that intelligence is “The global capacity to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with the environment.” The information I got from the presentation describes intelligence as Two contrasting views. The first of wich is the view that intelligence is a changing cognitive process that helps us acquire knowledge and function. the second of wich is the view that intelligence is a fixed ability, which is in part due to genetics.
