Prompt: Explain the following quote: “To be free, a man must be free of his brothers.” How does this quote exemplify a theme of Anthem? In the novel “Anthem” by Ayn Rand, the main character Equality 7-2521 expresses his own individuality. Equality became more independent unknowingly, by being by himself and learning more while he was by himself. The setting very much so impacts the theme, especially in this book. This is because, in this book, the theme is to not let yourself be controlled by others, to be different, independent and outgoing, and, to not be afraid to seek knowledge and or be curious. The setting connects the theme to the character development, because Equality 7-2521 becomes independent, the person that he turns out to be in the end of the book, and faces conflicts throughout the book because of this Cave from the Unmentionable Times. This cave caused conflict with Equality 7-2521 and the Corrective Detention, since he wouldn’t tell the people where he was and what he found, which caused him to be lashed
After Equality leaves his old society, he finds a new purpose, to “break the chains of the Earth, and raze the cities of the enslaved, and [his] home will become the capital of a world where each man will be free to exist for his own sake.” In the excerpt, the Earth is a representation of the Cities, and how they have chained down the citizens, restricting them of their full potential as individuals. Equality, now that he knows he is an individual, knows how much better it is than being “chained to the Earth”. He is more passionate than ever, and has decided to devote himself to liberating the people of the unjust society that they had no choice in being part of. Equality’s independence has sparked a desire to help others and given him a sense of empathy and freedom.
