Robin Sharma once said, “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end.” This quote really relates to Sal because when her mother left she was a mess and it was hard for her. Later, she moved and more things changed and things happened that she didn 't expect to happen. Although, in the end she was happy in Bybanks and happy with her family and friends. In the book Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech, Sal changes significantly from a lot of external forces in her life.

Have you ever been in a life threatening situation? Well 11 years old Salva has. During the Second Sudanese Civil War, Salva was one of several millions of people in danger. Salva was in school one day when gunfire erupted outside.

Trying to make a way in an already poor community and being different had the refugees wondering if the United States was what they really expected it to be. As Luma bonded with the boys she made a close bond with their families also. Luma wasn’t a refugees but she knew what it felt like to be an outsider. Luma helped the refugee families get jobs, also hired tutors for her players to improve their English. Luma had become a safety net for many of the refugee families.

As Maya Angelou once said,”We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.” This is astonishingly true for the character Sal. Sal went through numerous traumatizing things that impact Sal’s life and emotions in some big ways. I the book, “Walk Two Moons,” by Sharon Creech, external forces greatly shift Sal’s life in different direction. One of the most significant external change that changed Sal’s life, was when Sal’s mother left and never came back, because when she left, Sal didn’t feel any emotion.

Perseverance is an important theme in A Long Walk To Water. The first example of Perseverance is when Salva listens to what his uncle says. His uncle uses his full name, and Salva thinks of his family. Uncle tells him to only walk as far as that bush, or clump of rocks. Salva perseveres by thinking of his family.

When Salva had to lead thousands of boys to Kenya while he was exhausted from swimming in the River Gilo for as long as he can remember. Salva had the perseverance to lead so many boys abruptly before the refugees would have died or hunger or thirst, which many boys did die of hunger or thirst. “I will get us to safely to Kenya, he thought. No matter how hard it is “ (81). This quote shows that salva knew it was going to be a struggle but he still was able to get more than twelve hundred boys safely to Kenya.

Salva never gave up and took things ‘bit by bit, one step at a time. Nya always had hope and believed that there would be an easier way to get water, and she persevered every day by going to get water. Hope and perseverance relate to today because without them, we would never believe anything was going to get better or stay true to what we believe. We need hope in everyday life because if something is going bad at school, at home, at work, or anywhere, we need to be able to believe that something good will come. Also, we need to have perseverance because we need to stay true to what we believe or what we are

A long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park explains the story of a boy named Salva who lives in Sudan and must flee from war and desperately trying to find his family again. First, a young eleven year old boy named Salva who lives in Sudan, is a Dinka, and in 1985, is in school one day, when his village is attacked, forcing him to flee into the bush. The group Salva was with left him, but an older lady living near by gave him peanuts and let him stay in her barn. Salva found a group of his own people and later, a man named Buksa found a beehive and they all ate the honeycomb. A boy named Marial became friends with Salva, and to Salva's joy, Salva found his Uncle, but in the night Uncle woke Salva and told him that Marial was gone.

Imagine yourself trapped in a location where war and isolation are part of your everyday life. Are you prepared to walk miles through the dark nights of Africa, bare foot in search for protection and resources. Similarly in the novel “A Long Walk to Water” a young boy named Salva Mawien is struggling through the tough times of Sudan. As an eleven year old, getting drifted away from his beloved ones in just a matter time, the only answer to survive is to abandon home and flee. A life changing decision which gets him jumbled into more problems.

In the book A Long Walk to Water, the main character Salva must overcome a lot of challenges in order for his survival. He is persistent, a hard worker, and just overall a very lucky young boy. These factors are very big reasons for his survival. After reading the book, readers can see that one of the main factors for Salvas survival is hard work.

Over 24,000 boys between the ages of fifteen to eighteen started the tough journey to a refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya after being chased out of their homes by the Second Sudanese Civil War. Only half arrived to the refugee camp alive. The fictional character Salva Dut in Linda Sue Park’s A Long Walk to Water was one of these boys. On a normal school day, Salva was sitting in his classroom when gunshots started firing outside; following his teacher’s instructions, Salva immediately evacuated a small village in Southern Sudan and began the long, treacherous journey to a refugee camp in Ethiopia.

Salva and Jiya both helped themselves and others by thinking about everyone. The books teach about others and loved ones. Both books show how Jiya and Salva help themselves while thinking about others. They both know that staying their loved ones will help them in the future, that is why they did not turn their back on their family.
