“Rip Van Winkle” and the Emergence of an American Mythology. By Danise Bachman Rip van winkle in indeed a classic piece of American mythology. Washington Irving set this story in the past and filled it with exaggerated and sometimes, strange characters. It also features a mysterious and magical occurrence that put the main character to sleep for twenty years!

John had courage and boldness which Ichabod lacked. Each courtship and book portrayed heavy emotion and feeling. This was a strong theme in books written in the Romantic Era and these courtships were a definite example of that. John Alden was emotional and spiritual while courting Priscilla. Miles was cowardly while asking for Priscilla’s hand in marriage.

In the short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, the characters Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones compete in their courtship of Katrina Van Tassel. In The Courtship of Miles Standish by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Miles Standish and his friend John Alden both want to gain the hand of the virtuous Priscilla Mullins. Throughout both works, the characters use their own strategies to achieve their goals. Each of their strategies varies in success and expresses different parts of Romanticism.

Even though he seems to be lacking aesthetically, he wants it all and is willing to do anything to get it. Katrina is also quite greedy when it comes to winning over her male counterparts.

During Ichabod’s courtship, he completed each stage in order, however since Katrina rejected him, he rode off “with an air quite desolate and chop-fallen” (107), met the Headless Horsemen, and disappeared. While on the other hand, like Ichabod, Brom diligently tried to complete each stage of courtship and was apparently successful until Ichabod came along. Since Ichabod was in the way, “Brom took all opportunities of turning him into ridicule in presence of his mistress” (89). We assume Brom completed his final stage of courtship after Ichabod was scared away because he married Katrina.

Ever wanted to bring back someone that has passed away? Mary Shelley writes a novel called Frankenstein telling about the consequences of messing with life and death. She reveals that there are consequences to this. Victor Frankenstein bring the dead back to life but he can not face what he have created. Victor and his Creature have some similarities and differences which reveal messing with life or death can be dangerous.

While perusing To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, i’d realized most characters in books are made to be universally identifiable. I soon made the correlation that each character served as a specific archetype. The archetypes in this book, that personally seemed to protrude amongst the rest were, as follows: Bob Ewells, Calpurnia and Dill. Bob Ewells character was clearly meant to be despised by the reader. His nefarious nature sustained a sickening plot for this novel.

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are many similarities between the narrator, Scout, and the author, Harper Lee. For instance, both grew up in the time of the great depression with little money to do extra things; therefore, they relied on their imaginations to entertain them for hours (Haggerty) . Comparatively, both were tomboys in their youths and grew up in small towns where girls were expected to wear dresses and act like a lady. Also, both Harper Lee and Scout both grew up with their fathers being lawyers for their town and would often hear of cases that they worked on (“Harper Lee”) . Similarly, when writing her book a “mad dog warning” was released, no doubt giving the idea for the episode of the mad dog Tim Robinson.

Are there differences and similarities in “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” the short story from 1820 by Washington Irving and the movie “Sleepy Hollow” by the film star, Johnny Depp? Yes, there are differences and similarities. There is differences and similarities in the plot, characters, Ichabod’s profession, the philosophy of the Headless Horseman, Van Tassel’s party, Ichabod Crane and Brom Bone fighting over Katrina Van Tassel and, Brom Bones dressing up like The Headless Horseman.   The differences between “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” the short story and “Sleepy Hollow” the movie are: Ichabod’s profession, the plot and, the philosophy of the Headless Horseman. In the short story Ichabod Crane is a teacher from Connecticut.

The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow was written by Washington Irving. His work is seen to be influenced by the occurring events in his time as he wrote this. Irving uses history and storytelling. As reflected in the story, Revolutionary War is included. It depicts reality, history and supernatural merged into one.

Who hasn’t heard of the 1820 short story, The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow written by Washington Irving? It’s old enough for pretty much everyone to know. Then protagonist, Ichabod Crane, and the antagonist, Brom Van Brunt or Brom Bones both have similarities and differences. For example, Ichabod was teacher. On the other hand, Brom Bones was a farmer.

Both were similar in that they were dealing with racial segregation in what is termed the deep southern states. So their environments were similar. but different in perspectives. one being a child and the other a man. Scout was raised to be open minded in an environment that nurtured her in the belief that all people were equal regardless of race or class.

1. After watching FOX’s Sleepy Hollow there are many differences between the short story and the show. The two most significant and meaningful changes in my opinion are Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. In the story Crane is a goofy looking individual, who works as the town’s school master, and is trying to gain the love of Katrina.

If Irving in “Rip Van Winkle” headed to mix the physical and metaphorical dream reflecting the sigh of freedom in colony, in this work he brought the new American breath to the old Europe. Unlike other works, Irving described the happened events in Germany. All these hinted at that Irving wanted to ruin the old fences around Europe that formulated for many years.
