Why censorship is harmful
Everyday a parent or teacher tries to get a book banned or control what is taught in schools. There is even a banned book week. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is a novel about a society that practices this sort of censorship. “Censorship in schools” defines censorship as “the suppression of ideas and information that certain persons- individuals, groups or officials- find objectionable or dangerous”. Censorship is very harmful to society. Censorship is harmful because it keeps people from learning the truth, it violates the 1st amendment, and it violates anonymity. Censorship keeps people from learning the truth in schools. In the article entitled,”Reading, Writing and Censorship: When Good Books Can Get Schools in Trouble”, the author states,” The removal, suppression, or restricted circulation of literary, artistic or

In the article entitled,”The Case For Censorship In The New Social Age,” the author Geoff Yang states,“Having the ability to speak freely without repercussions can spark honest discussion about important, delicate or emotionally charged topics.” This is saying that speaking freely without can create an honest discussion. Being anonymous can help some people communicate better with others. The author Geoff Yang goes on to say Secret is an app that lets you post your opinion freely and anonymously. This is saying there is an app that lets you post your opinion freely without fear. Censorship violates anonymity and makes people not want to speak without fear. Many believe that censorship is helpful.”In Pros and Cons of Censorship” by Prabhakar Pillai it states that “Censorship is necessary to preserve the secrets of the U.S. so other nations do not find out our nation's secret. It is understandable why the opposition believes that censorship protects the secrets of the nation. Although censorship protects secrets of the nation, it is not valid to keep certain secrets from the
Almost every book offends someone in the world. However, as Ray Bradbury once said, “You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture, you just have to get people to stop reading them.” Censoring books and literature is robbing people of knowledge about other cultures. How can anyone learn to accept another culture if they can’t learn anything about them. Censorship is meant to make people feel comfortable, however, it will lead to lack of knowledge
In the novel Fahrenheit 451 Bradbury unexplicitely states that censorship can change the world. At the beginning of the book you find out that fire fighters now start fires rather than put them out and throughout it’s very apparent that books have been censored, but saying that through the
In this Dystopian novel, books are not meant to be read, but rather meant to be burned. The world is dictated by the government through the censorship of books because they are a distraction to society. It’s a fast paced lifestyle with no room to slow down, read a book, and concentrate on what’s important. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, there are many examples of references to literature that show the theme of the novel, which is how censorship affects a society, like when the women was going to be burned with her books, when Beatty was explaining to Montag why books were burned when Montag felt sick, and lastly, when Montag let Faber see the Bible. Censorship played a huge role in Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, because it was used to limit education, spread propaganda, and change history to benefit the government.
In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, censorship is a main topic. The novel shows the impact that censorship has on society. Censorship is wrong because much censored information can teach us some valuable lessons and topics. Censorship is necessary when it comes to young children learning about mature content. Parents should monitor what their child is doing.
Writers’ who emphasize these ideas, values, and problems aim to educate students on what is happening around them. Censorship does not allow these books to be exposed to children, therefore not allowing them to really understand what is going on around them. Censorship is a controversial issue that is evident throughout Fahrenheit 451.
Anytown School Board, 11,300 books have been put in question for possible removal since 1982. The School Board is trying to make it so that the book Fahrenheit 451 is not a part of any school curriculum or read on campus by students. While parents do have the right to decide whether or not reading material is appropriate for their children, it should be a choice that affects their child only, not the entire population of students. I feel the banishment of the novel Fahrenheit 451 is unjust and is explicit censorship. An important reason we shouldn’t allow books to be censored in school libraries is that it’s taking away student’s right to read books of their choosing.
Censorship for security purposes should be permitted, but censoring the general public should not be condoned because it represses the right to free speech and individuality. The United States does not have censorship, because the right to free speech is protected by the first amendment. People dislike being censored because they prefer to have the choice of knowledge. In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, censorship is present in their futuristic society. Some people may argue, however, that people would be happier in a state of ignorance, but would someone really choose that over being able to know what’s happening?
Censorship can also play a key part in keeping a country’s secrets a mystery and protecting them from attacks or hackers. As a phone call rings in Connecticut a man is trying to identify the man in the Falling Man picture and says to a woman,” Tell me what the photo looks like," she says. It's a famous picture, the man says—the famous picture of a man falling.” Censorship is able to protect the victims of an event or story and hide their identity from the media and from people they wouldn’t want to see them at their lowest. People have a right in order to be fully protected if they choose that they do not wish to be fully exposed if a situation were to happen where they were in a situation like the man in the Falling Man
Censorship is defined as “when a person of group successfully imposes their values upon other by stifling words, images or ideas” (Gould 2009). When we think of censorship, we think of the bleeping out of words on television and the radio. Sometimes we censor ourselves in conversation around small children or in a professional environment. However, most people do not think about the censorship of literature. A famous example is when Hitler would collect piles of books and burn them because they did not match the ideals of his regime.
Fahrenheit 451 Socratic Seminar Question 1: Are there circumstances where censorship might play a beneficial role in society? Are there some books that should be banned? How would Ray Bradbury answer this question? Explain using evidence from the book. Notes:
Imagine if your life story got banned because it was too graphic and contained excessive coarse language. Well this is the exact situation Jaycee Lee Dugard found herself in with her novel A Stolen Life. Although most believe Dugard should not be in this situation due to the fact that her novel reiterates the ‘stranger danger’ concept, she has a right to tell her story, and the ban keeps her kidnapper’s crime a secret. This novel should be free to read without challenge because it demonstrates the danger of interacting with strangers, it allows Jaycee to reveal her what happened in captivity, and banning it only protects the kidnapper. Censorship is the practice of limiting access to information, ideas or books in order to prevent knowledge or freedom of thought as well
Censorship is an important theme in Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451. Censorship affected this alternate society in many ways. The government censored all books and made it illegal to read anything other than informational booklets. This affected their society by making the people living in it emotionless and unaware of the world around them. It led to television and radio being the main focus of their lives.
The world gets crueler everyday. There are new crimes being committed daily, and sometimes it can be because of what people are subjected to. In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, this topic is discussed. In order to create a more positive environment, the world needs censorship. Without it, kids would be surrounded by bad influences, people would always find topics to argue about, and lives can even be ruined without it.
