CCHS Marching Band Leadership Essay
Leadership is the most important aspect of a band. Depending on the qualities of the leaders, they are what can either hold the band up or tear them apart. Leadership is about more than just having a better social life or popularity status, which is how a lot of students treat it. Leadership should be treated professionally and with true passion. I had a good understanding of what makes a good leader before, but my understanding heightened after talking to my Fine Art’s counselor, Mrs. Wallace, about her views on what makes a good leader. These values show professionalism, which will in turn help you get the leadership position you desire. Dedication is really putting all your extra time and effort in to making whatever you are a part in the best it can be. A dedicated student will not come up with excuses to just to get out of rehersal or a show. You also need to pick someone respectful, for multiple reasons. One of which is so no problems occurr in the program, because when someone is disrespectful they make others frustrated with them and arguments begin (which is never ever a good thing for a group program). Also, being disrespectful to a peer is downright degrading. You will make people feel bad about themselves, then in return the will give up. If everyone is just respectful to each other things will run more smoothly and the results will be much more positive. But besides from being dedicated and respectful, you also need to be really truly dedicated to what you are doing. A passionate leader will pour their heart and soul into whatever they are doing, and that alone makes the outcome a million times more authentic and amazing then someone who just kind of showed up to the auditions and made it. Wallace, I have added some new aspects to my list of outstanding leadership skills. This includes being punctual, firm yet fair, and using easy to understand language. Leaders for a highschool activity should always be on time. If your leader is always late, that takes away from useable rehersal time, but if they show up when they are supposed to, you will be able to get done what needs to be done to make the program the best it can be. Also, future leaders really need to learn the concept of firm yet fair. This is because, if you are to light, you will be taken advantage of and no one will ever listen to you, but on the other hand, if you are too firm, everyone will start to dislike you therefore not listen to you. It is extremely important to have the perfect balance of both firm and fair. Another point Mrs. Wallace brought up, something I have never thought about before, is using language that people under you can actually unerstand. Which basically means not to use huge words that your group will not understand, beacuse if that happens, again people will get discouraged and probably not understand what is asked of them. Leaders need to not worry so much about trying to look smart, and just use common language that everyone understands. It will make everythng so much more easy. I have found that being a leader means more often being a servant and volunteer. I don’t get much acknowledgment for the extra hours I spend every practice prepping or taking down the equipment. That's not the reason I do what I do. To put it simply, band taught me to care. Band taught me to care about my family at home, my family at school, and the random freshman I see struggling in the hallway.
Throughout the past two years as a member of the Flyer Marching Band, I have had opportunities to develop myself as an efficient worker in a group environment, become comfortable with having leadership roles, and to understand what it truly means to be a veteran marcher. During my few years with the marching band, I have also been through two seasons experiencing others’ leadership, some people being more effective towards their respective sections than others. Character is perhaps the most important aspect of being an honorable leader. One of the attributes that I value most is kindness. No matter how simple it may seem, it is certainly important. I make an effort to be a good friend to everyone I encounter and make them feel respected. Making others know their worth and feel respected is a great way to earn their respect back.

Acquiring leadership skills along with a strong character and the sense to serve others is vital. A leader should be resourceful, dependable, selfless, and a good problem solver. I have led in many ways- inside and outside of school. Last year as a tenth grader, I was class secretary for Class Council.
1. My philosophy of leadership is about collaboration and teamwork. Respecting and treating everyone the same, is key to supporting a good team atmosphere. I believe when a leader puts effort and care into assisting others, then their peers and followers will naturally want to support them. It is also important for a leader to recognize, that advocacy must never become so important that the critical elements of leadership are neglected (e.g. policy enforcement, command support, etc...).
Determination. I had to put this word first in this essay because its the only word that has a big meaning to me and has my whole life. Being determined has done a lot for me in the long run. It had kept my motivations up and going, also has led my life to where it is now. Determination wasn't just planted into my mindset one day.
Throughout my entire life I have been constantly learning and improving a wide range of personal and social leadership skills, especially in these most recent few years of middle school and high school. These skills have not only helped me to get where I am today, but have also become a huge influence for my personality and overall perception of the world around me. These skills have helped me to build relationships, gain experience and opportunities, improve my personal outlook, and change my entire approach to everything I do in a positive way. But I know it does not stop there. It is never truly possible to fully possess a leadership skill in its entirety.

Leaders should always use closed-ended questions to promptly find specifics. 4. Leaders should always encourage discussion through eye contact and expression. 5. Leaders should always state their understanding of what they are hearing by reaffirming briefly what the other person is saying but never make fun of it or insult it.
When we think of leaders there are a host of names that can come to mind from Gandhi, Malcolm X, and Bill Gates just to name a few. From these names it would be easy to conclude that these leaders possess some natural talent that made them who they are. Although natural talent is a factor to their success, there are certain leadership theories and styles that make them the leaders that they are. From these popular leaders known today to the manager of a local shop, each possess some traits that help develop their leadership styles or a theory that explains why they are in their current position. The following will discuss five leadership styles and theories that are characteristics of leaders, identify current leaders who possess these traits, and explore my own leadership style.
Leadership skills include honesty, commitment, confidence, and the ability to creativity, the ability to delegate and communicate effectively with others. I think each leader at least must exhibiting leadership skills, even if he hasn't them. By time this way will help him to improve leadership skills. It will become as naturally. To be a successful leader I also agree that one needs to have certain characteristic and skills. A leader needs to be able to simple lead, as you have stated. They need to direct and guide people to fulfill shared goals. Communication is also another huge skill. A leader needs to be able to clearly communicate, build relationships, motivate others, inspire others, and be a role model to create a positive work environment and culture that will accept change and innovation in the company.
My leadership philosophy is one driven by emotion. I want to be the leader that makes people feel. I want them to feel as though we are all part of a family and that they are cared about. I want to show them that I not only care about our job at hand but care about them personally; where their physical and mental health is always as important as reaching any goal.
