Completed in 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad opened new doors for the United States. In order for this to happen though, some had to be closed. Our country was in desperate need on some of these changes, but some we could have lived without. This great connection of the coasts brought with it many positive and negative effects on the Native Americans, society, and the environment.

In 1864 Congress approved the Northern Pacific Railway to be built. The NPR is the first transcontinental railroad in the northern part of the country. It is 8,316 miles long, beginning in Minnesota and ending in Washington state, with many branches going off the main line. When congress approved it they also supplied nearly 40million acres of land grants to build the railroad on. Construction didn 't go underway until 1870, and the rail road was finally christened to open on Sept. 8 1888.

The West’s Influence on the Canadian Pacific Railway The Canadian Pacific Railway was first foremost a business, and like all businesses the main goal is economic success. In its rival and creation, the marvel of the steel rail was a lucrative plan by the East where politicians and investors got together to establish the first ever Canadian Railway. Its first obligation was to bring settlers in at very low cost, and, sometimes, even free of charge. The types of people that began to migrate West were those who were searching for a better life. One which contains less poverty and more opportunities.

The year 1885 marked a momentous time in history for Canadians across the country. This year marked the end of the construction of the technological advancement for the transportation of goods and people, The Canadian Pacific Railway, known as the CPR. The CPR's impact provided a crucial infrastructure that facilitated Canada's economic growth for years and was originally built to “Physically connect Canadians coast to coast (Briggs, 2023)”. The railway exceeded expectations financially and virtually as it is still in use today and it is a staple in Canadian history for the development and settlement of Western Canada. Many other railway companies failed to achieve profitability and went out of business.

The Erie Canal’s creation would have a dramatic change on America because of money, Abolition and movements, but the most important was the transportation that it provided. The Erie Canal made a lot of money, until the 1850’s, when the train system was made. Although the train system didn’t directly affected the canal, it sure decreased the revenue. The train system was quite fast; however, you would have to change trains multiple times.

With the advent of the railroad, many of these issues disappeared. Railroads had a major impact on advancing the American economy, transforming America into a modern society, and improving an antiquated transportation system. The building of railroads created rapid economic growth in America. Railroad companies employed more than one million workers to build and maintain railroads. At the same time, coal, timber, and steel industries employed thousands of workers to provide the supplies necessary to build railroads (Chapter 12 Industrialization).

The building of roads, canals and railroads played a large role in the United States during the 1800s. They served the purpose of connecting towns and settlements so that goods could be transported quickly and more efficiently. These goods could be transported fast, cheap and in safe way through the Erie Canal that was built to connect the Great Lakes to New York. Railroads were important during Civil War as well, because it helped in the transportation of goods, supplies and weapons when necessary. These new forms of transportation shaped the United States into the place that it is today.
