Sir John A. Macdonald and the Canadian Government realized that it was necessary to build a railway for several governmental administrative reasons, such as enhancing the simplicity of travel and trade between provinces. As a result, the Dominion of Canada began manufacturing the Canadian Pacific Railway, which stretched from the Atlantic coast all the way across the continent to the Pacific. In 1864 Congress approved the Northern Pacific Railway to be built. The NPR is the first transcontinental railroad in the northern part of the country. It is 8,316 miles long, beginning in Minnesota and ending in Washington state, with many branches going off the main line. When congress approved it they also supplied nearly 40million acres of land grants to build the railroad on. Construction didn 't go underway until 1870, and the rail road was finally christened to open on Sept. 8 1888.

Due to them being in opposite political parties, they both had different policies that they wanted to imply on Canada. McDonald 's policies were, the National Policy, the creation of the Canadian Pacific railway, slowing down the development of the Supreme court and the Royal military college. While Mackenzie 's policy was to increase free trade with the US, make Canada more independent, and cancels the building of the railway. Nevertheless, MacDonald was the one who I believe benefitted Canada 's future.. With MacDonald ordering the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway throughout all of Canada.

People always say that the best inventions ever are phones or computers, but there is one that people take for granted. This invention changed the way we look at shipping forever. The Transcontinental railroad changed the United States economically more than socially or politically because, it allowed western states export their goods easier, increased the amount of goods exported, and made it cheaper for states to export their products. In 1871 British Columbia joined confederation and was the 6th province to be apart of the country known as “Canada”. “On July 20, 1871, British Columbia entered Confederation as our sixth province, extending the young Dominion of Canada to the Pacific Ocean.” (http://www.canadahistoryproject.ca/1871/ ) One of the main reasons B.C. was able to join Canada, was because of the Fraiser River Gold Rush. This was when 30,000 miners from the United States came to British Columbia to get in on the gold rush.
This was a really interesting and informative chapter to read because I had no idea how big of a role the Chinese played in American History. I wasn’t surprised when I was reading about how “white” laborers demanded that certain companies to not hire any Chinese people. I though to myself “here we go again”, but I was happily surprised when I read about what the President of the Central Pacific Railroad had to say about these demands. The President of the company Leland Stanford had nothing but positive things to say about his Chinese workers. He often referred to them as quiet, peaceful, reliable, and willing to learn all the different kinds of work.
