The perception of Buddhism varied greatly from the collapse of the Han Dynasty to the formation of the Tang Dynasty in China. At the same time, the perception towards Christianity in the Roman Empire was undergoing similar changes. Emperors saw the religion as a threat, lower classmen saw it as a path to salvation, while scholars, as a whole, were indecisive. Those in power perceived Buddhism as a strain on China’s society and economy as well as a threat to their rule. In document seven, Tang Emperor Wu declares that Buddhism “wears out the people’s strength, pilfers their wealth, causes people to abandon their lords and parents for the company of teachers, and serves man and wife with its monastic decrees” and that it causes a large strain on resources because workers are giving up their jobs. These people probably have the dissatisfaction of the current state of the country or the current religion and could be potential converts to Buddhism.

The main idea is that through ‘The Four Noble Truths’ one can put a stop to their suffering.

Enlightenment includes a concept proposed by the philosopher John Locke that all humans, when they are born, are entitled to basic human rights. The Enlightenment also includes the thought that things in the universe are constant, leading away from such a strong reliance on God. The concept of Enlightenment inspired many proceeding declarations, including the USA’s declaration because it encouraged equality to all men. What we’ve learned during this project is that Buddhists have a very strict lifestyle and they have to follow many rules such as the four noble truths and the eightfold path. The four noble truths were invented by Buddha or Siddhartha Gautama. One of the four noble truths invented by Buddha is all life is suffering, therefore nothing lasts forever. In like manner, the second noble truth is the cause of suffering is desire because our desires will always exceed what we have and that will leave us unhappy, the third noble truth is by stopping desires suffering also stops, it means that you shouldn’t get too attached to anything or anyone, and lastly the fourth noble truth is to follow the eightfold path, and the eightfold path is to have right views, right intentions, right speech, right concentration, right action, right mindfulness, right livelihood, and right effort.
