Boy Scouts Controversial Law Changes I was a part of the Boy Scouts of America(BSA) for many years and during that time I saw many different rule changes in the program that affected my troop and many others in different ways. The first law change that immediately affected my troop was when the BSA lifted their ban on letting homosexual scouts into troops. Another law is lifting their ban on homosexual leaders in the troops. Finally, The last controversial law change is letting girls into the boy scouts. I will address how these laws have affected my troop and other troops. Another point I will address is how they have affected the overall scouting community and whether the laws have driven people away or if the laws unintentionally shut …show more content…
This argument had started a long time ago with supreme court case “Boys Scouts of America v. Dale(2000).” In this case a scout leader by the name of James Dale came out as gay in a newspaper article, he was quickly removed from his leaders position in his troop and he soon sued the BSA for discrimination. At first the case looked good for Dale as the court thought that him being a part of the troop would not alter the group in any significant way and had the BSA reinstate him. However, later the BSA said that their First amendment rights were being infringed upon so it appealed to the U.S supreme court. After much discussion the ruling turned in favor of the BSA because it was a private organization and homosexuallity was against the groups values, the supreme court ruled in favor of the BSA(Brannen). This law change brought up issues like the law allowing gay scouts into the organization like the charter organizations disbanding troops and the scouts leaving the troops so the modifications to the law will be similar to the gay scouts. Let the troops charter organization decide if they would allow gay leaders into the troops and it would fix some of the problems to like letting the charter organizations keep their beliefs in the troop, the charter organization would be able to decide who they let in so there would be no more dibanding troops, and there would not be as much controversy on the …show more content…
This brings a lot of controversy for many reasons. One of them is that parents are worried about girls and boys sleeping in the same tent(Turkewitz). Another one is that the Girl Scouts of America accused the Boy Scouts of waging a "covert campaign to recruit girls into programs run by the Boy Scouts." And it would be a shame if the Girl Scouts suffered as a result(Wall Street Journal). One way we can fix these problems is to continue to keep the girls out of the boy scouts. There are the girl scouts who pretty much do the same stuff as the boy scouts and many people do not understand why there is a need for them to join the boy scouts. If the girl do wanna hang out with guy friends there is a boy scout program called venture crew which is a separate branch from the boy scouts that allows boys and girls to be co-ed in there campsites and other activities. In addition there are ground rules which involve the guys and girls sleeping in the same tent or hammock saying that it is not allowed. So, the only thing that needs to be modified with this law is just get rid of the girls, there is no point in creating a law to allow girls in the BSA if programs already exist that do the same things as the boy

Furthermore, the last version of the bill before it was passed was modified to include the final compromise by the House of Representatives to allow homosexuals into the military. This was a completely unrelated issue, yet was a very salient and visible issue in the United
The resolution for this case could be found depending on whether the petitioners, as free adults are allowed to engage in sexual conduct, exercising their liberty under the Due Process Clause. By this, the court deemed it necessary to reconsider the Bowers holding. The case’s initial statement was, “The issue presented is whether the Federal Constitution confers a fundamental right upon homosexuals to engage in sodomy… ,” 478 U.S., at 190 - informs on the Court’s failure to acknowledge the expanse of the liberty at stake. The laws in the Bowers case sought to control a person’s relationship, whether it would be formally
The Supreme Court granted a certiorari to answer the question if the rulings for other cases against homosexual’s equality had gone against the fourteenth amendment, if Bowers vs Hardwick should be overturned, and if homosexuals should have privacy in their own
The most important change should be made to make all the policies actually work together, each statue should work on something specific, and not overtaking other policy
At the time of the repeal 78% of Americans were in acceptance/support of the repeal, with only 43% of Americans thinking it is morally wrong, which had dropped from the previous 55% (Kurzcy). With the majority of people in acceptance of the repeal of the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, it caused a movement forward for Americans, with them being able to serve in the military freely without punishment of being kicked out for being gay. There has always been tension between soldiers from the time the military has been around to
Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organization that tries to impact the youth across the country by giving them a positive role model that helps guide them in the right direction. In their mission, Big Brothers Big Sisters states that it is their goal to “provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationship that change their lives for the better, forever.” A child who participates in the program is called a “little” and they are given a “big”, and this “big” is supposed to influence their life in a positive way by creating a strong and lasting support system. It is important for children in low socioeconomic environments and single parent homes to have someone to encourage their passions
With this law, individuals can not be treated based on their sexuality, however, there is still a chance that they may experience harassment or discrimination within the workforce/place. Safety and Security There is sill a huge issue about keeping individuals in the GLBTI community away from emotional or physical violence. As a result of their sexual orientation, there is a high number of violence towards gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities. They are still involved in hate-crimes whether is verbal abuse, or threatening emails/texts/messages.
Schools can no longer legally shut doors to certain courses or training on the basis of sex. The law says girls must be free to pursue career training in courses like aviation, automotive repair, and architectural drafting, while boys can choose to pursue cooking, nursing, and cosmetology. Career training must be by choice and not by gender. School doors are opening to women faculty.
Thus, BSA can set up meetings with its funders such as UMC church, and work on a decision whether to allow LGBT people or even girls to participate in BSA. It would benefit BSA to both support its constituents and avoid taking national stance while preserving the support from its funders. According to Poll: Most Americans Support Lifting Ban on Gay Boy Scouts, “In splitting the decision, the group may be trying to modernize while continuing to respect a diversity of views on homosexuality”. Declaration as such proves BSA intent to stay neutral, which is a wise decision due to the current tensions about the issue. In addition, it would benefit LGBT to focus on persuading local organizations about their cause rather than wasting time on endless trails that could lose public’s attention afterwhile.

The ERA would help the world and society grow to understand, accept and support one another rather than treating each other differently just because of our genders. It would also help with sex discrimination cases by supporting that the US has no tolerance for sex discrimination. Although we are starting to treat each other how we are supposed to there are still times where we forget that we are human being and we forget to treat each other as such. For centuries we have argued who is the superior gender when none of that should matter, we were all created equal as should be treated as such. People fear that passing this amendment will change the world and they are right it will however, the world is changing every day and we need to come to terms that men and women and any gender is a human being and as humans we have rights.
There are so many people in America that dislike and discriminated against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people just because of their sexuality. Texas was an entire state that discriminated against this group of people. The Lawrence v. Texas case change history for the better. If Lawrence had not filed a case, sodomy could still be illegal. Finally, the Courts noticed that the Fourteenth Amendment was not being fully fulfilled.
In 2015, the Obergefell v. Hodges case ended the “state bans on same-sex marriage”, therefore legalizing same-sex marriage (Important Supreme Court Cases). Now, “same-sex couples can now receive the benefits...of marriage that were largely exclusive to heterosexual couples” (Koch). The ruling has led to the modern fight for gay civil rights. Exposure to the LGBTQ+ community, the southern “Bathroom Bills”, and other fights for transgender rights, and the press for more LGBTQ+ representation in the media has erupted from this case. Both rulings had very big impacts on their respective communities.
Single-sex classes are not always a smart idea. For younger grades sure but as middle school starts, they should not be separated because the goal of school is to get young people prepared for the job environment and real life. Keeping girls separated from boys will only serve to harm them as they enter the real world. Another goal of schooling is to help you become who you would like to be in a supportive environment with friends from all of the walks of life, whether or not they be female, male, transgender, straight or gay. Hanging out with the same gender for six hours a day without a glimpse of other people who could become their friends would only hurt students as personalities are all different.
