In this paper the short story by Olaudah Equiano Life of Olaudah Equiano and The Journal of Christopher Columbus by Christopher Columbus will be compared. I will go over various points such as descriptive details, emotional appeal, and word choice to find what the author's purpose is in these two different narratives. First I will analyze emotional appeal. The two narratives have different cover pictures, while these are not words they do give impressions.

Bernardo de Galvez deserves recognition for shaping florida to be the way it is today. This Spanish born sailor sailed from his homeland to the eastern seaboard of the new world in 1777. Bernardo fought the british and claim Florida for spain which ended up becoming the 27th state. He also connected florida with other states which caused people to move there and gave florida allies before it was a state.

The beginning of Cabeza de Vaca’s voyage was very promising; he had strong ships, a team of 600 men, and ample amount of horses, food, and resources. Their motive of finding new land to call home and spread the message of Christianity was going to come true. Before arriving to the new land, they were very prestige and well off. However, after a sequence of events, these things changed.

The book I am reading is Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario. I predict that the author will explore the human rights issue of Immigration Laws and the plight of illegal aliens in the United States. I believe that this issue will be important in the story because Enrique the main character in the story is very driven to find his mother who has gone herself illegally to the United States to earn money to provide an education for her children and to better the life of her family. I made this prediction because Lourdes leaves her children in Honduras as she goes to make money in the United States and her son Enrique is left saying “Donde esta mi mami?” “Where is my mom?”

Some factors that best explain the success enjoyed by the 16th century conquistadors in conquering Native American empires include riding horses, wearing helmets, advanced weaponry, intimidation, strategy, and disease. Riding horses allowed the conquistadors to move fast and carry their weapons with them, causing fear in the Natives and their defeat. The conquistadors wore helmets that helped protect their heads from the Native American retaliation; this is a very vulnerable part of the body when not protected. Advanced weapons such as guns were terrifying to the Native Americans instilling fear in them and put them at a disadvantage in fighting off the conquistadors. Ponce De Leon was searching for the "Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine, Florida. De Leon thought that because of the name of the fountain, it would bring youth to all and he would stay alive forever. One other thing that he searched for was, gold. The country that sponsored his expedition was Spain. Spain help support this cause because they could get something out of this.

Juan Ponce de León has been killed by natives on his voyage as according to his crew who has arrived back. He was to colonize the land, which he did. However, he needed to conquer the land and take it from the natives. He brought about 50 soldiers with him and many weapons. However, it seems that the European weapons that they brought were less effective for close-range fighting and they were forced to retreat.

During this time, the idea of exploration was spreading quickly, as kingdoms and empires in Europe sought to expand their territory. Portugal, with Spain following after, led the way for exploration as they headed south. Spain, however, ventured west, driven by a patriotic attitude of expanding past their borders. Levy tells the story of Hernan Cortes, originally setting sail from Spain, as he sailed from Cuba to the shores of Mexico in 1519, eager about the discovery of new lands.

A unique writer is someone who expresses his or her feelings throughout his narratives. Junot Diaz in my opinion is one of those unique writers. Growing up in the Dominican Republic, raced only by his hard working mother, Junot Diaz learned very valuable lessons in his childhood that helped him become whom he is today. Not only does Junot Diaz write great stories, but he also tends to give us a feeling of what is meant to be an immigrant from the Dominican Republic in his stories. Diaz humbleness and compassion towards others can be seen in this writing.

The 16th century Spanish explorer, Hernando De Soto arrived in the west indies as a young man and made money in slave trade. Seeking glory and riches, he left on a major expedition in 1538 to conquer Florida for Spain. He and his men traveled throughout the southeastern united states in search of money. In 1541, De Soto became the first Europeans to cross the Mississippi river. De Soto died early the following year.

Álvar Núñez Cabeza De Vaca Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was a spanish explorer from the New World and was an early explorer and first historian of Texas who was born in Jeréz de la Frontera, Spain in 1490 and died in 1559 in his early career he was in the military. In 1527 he was part of an expedition led by Panfilo de Narváez in an attempt to claim the territory from Florida to Mexico for Spain that reached what is now Tampa Bay, Florida, they set out with around 600 men and set out in June in 1528 and only four people survived and Cabeza De Vaca was one of them. Cabeza de vaca traveled for eight years across the southeast US he became a faith healer to some Native Americans as well as a trader. His name means ‘’cow head’’ in spanish

He uses Aura, Felipe Montero, and Consuelo as a reflection of the past and the present, where for example, Consuelo represents the past and Felipe the present. In this paper I will explain how the love story of Felipe, Aura, and Consuelo represent Mexican history. In addition this paper will explain how myth breaks down into different elements, such as religion, legends, traditions, and beliefs, all of which are manifested in the different characters and their actions within this novel.
