With the rise of mass media throughout the 20th century, the popular image of women in America has undergone a substantial change. From Marilyn Monroe to Kate Moss, the body shapes of the most admired models have remained consistently slimmer than that of the average American woman, representing a nearly impossible ideal. This has resulted in a severe rise in weight anxieties and negative body image among women and girls. Dissatisfaction with weight is nearly universal among women, while dieting is ubiquitous. This trend has likewise been reflected around the world wherever this media culture has become dominant. The result has been the massive spread of previously rare eating disorders and lifelong unhappiness toward one 's own body. The media is responsible for many of these unhealthy decisions that can and do manifest themselves in women in the US and abroad in forms such as insecurities of body image, obesity and eating disorders. First, the media’s constant barrage of slender, scantily clad women and buff, muscular, tan and half-naked men reinforced the notion of the “ideal” male and female bodies, which is exactly the type of imagery that has a negative effect on adolescents. In her book, Body Shots: Hollywood and the Culture of Eating Disorders, Emily Fox-Kales, a clinical psychologist with a strong background in the treatment of eating disorders, which includes bulimia, anorexia, binge eating, OSFED, EDNOS, and PICA, as well as body dysmorphia disorder describes the strong impact media has on women’s perceptions of themselves and displays the evolution of eating disorders through firsthand accounts. Fox-Kales describes society’s current culture as “the culture of eating disorders” (1). She points out that women no longer exchange recipes, but rather share a fear of food as well as diet tips and tricks to reduce weight. She continues to explain that “food has become more taboo than sex ever was and the bathroom scale more challenging a confrontation than the confessional booth” (1). Our culture has engorged the minds of women young and old with diets that are taken too far and become problematic.
One of the biggest issues with the media is “thin-ideal media.” Many American celebrities of the twenty first century are incredibly skinny. However, this is only because so many of them lose weight due to unforgiving diets and overbearing workouts. Thin-ideal media causes the majority of issues, “‘thin-ideal media’ refers to media images, shows and films that contain very thin female leads… Thin-ideal media highlights the idea that thinness is a good and desirable thing to be, even if it is to a level that is potentially damaging to a persons health” (Farrar). Females are portrayed as feminine, skinny, and ladylike on screen.
The media targets both female and male recipients, it is not just toward women (Fell 1). Miss Representation fails to recognize that the media objectifies and sexualizes both genders. Fell asserts that Magazines and tabloids hold photoshopped images of males that when compared to a normal american male’s body, can cause a major loss of self-esteem. In my paper, I am going to discuss whether and how mass media may shape adolescents’ sexualities. I argue that, though there is no doubt that media have a great impact on the formation of adolescents sexualities, nevertheless, adolescents do have substantial control over the use of mass media - what medium, which messages, where and when. I argue that teens are capable to assess critically the content of mass media. They are inclined to choose those media messages that best suit their needs and personalities. Thus I may say that they also take part in and contribute to the formation of their sexualities.
