Chapter three of Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo begins with Antonio realizing that his innocence is fleeting, especially after having experienced the death of a man the night before. It’s Sunday which means the family will attend mass, but before heading out Antonio’s parents have a brief dispute about their son growing up. Antonio’s mother believes that it’s a sin “for a boy to grow into a man” because they will lose the pureness that was bestowed onto them from birth. Yet, Antonio’s father and Ultima disagree with that notion. That Sunday Antonio knew that town would be mourning the two deaths of Chavez’s brother and Lupito, along with the other sons and husbands that were directly caused by the war.

In the novel Bless Me, Ultima, written by Rudolfo Anaya, follows the journey of the main character, Antonio, from his childhood into his early maturity. His journey slowly stripped away at his innocence and continually challenged his religious beliefs shaping him into the person that is seen at the end of the book. Growing up can be a challenge and through this book, it shows how Antonio grew up from a six year old boy into a man through the help of his family, his religious belief, the challenges caused by different people, and especially Ultima, a healer. One example of Antonio growing up into a mature person was when he witnessed the death of Lupito. After seeing Lupito get shot and die right in front of him, he started questioning

Introduction Paragraph 1 Lead In: Looking at Rudolfo Anaya’s, Bless Me, Ultima, the readers notice a growth in the main protagonist’s mind and spirit. Anaya incorporates both American and Hispanic culture into the novel as a means of relating to Mexican American people that grew up in a relatively similar fashion to the novel. The main character, Antonio, is just a child in the novel, but he must deal with loss, major life decisions, and the questioning of his own God. All this through the span of several years, Antonio experiences the challenges that should have been experienced in a lifetime.

Gender role is basically an arrangement of societal standards directing what sorts of practices are by and large viewed as satisfactory, suitable or alluring for a man in view of their real or actual sex.
