Black Activism During Reconstruction

Although slavery was declared over after the passing of the thirteenth amendment, African Americans were not being treated with the respect or equality they deserved. Socially, politically and economically, African American people were not being given equal opportunities as white people. They had certain laws directed at them, which held them back from being equal to their white peers. They also had certain requirements, making it difficult for many African Americans to participate in the opportunity to vote for government leaders. Although they were freed from slavery, there was still a long way to go for equality through America’s reconstruction plan.

The Civil War and the period of Reconstruction brought significant political, social, and economic changes to American society, and these effects continued into the 20th century. Following the ending of the Civil War in 1865, America was in an era known as the Reconstruction. The Reconstruction lasted until 1877. Citizens were attempting to rebuild our nation following one of the deadliest war in American History. In this time, the Fourteenth Amendment and Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution were ratified. Although slaves were freed, African Americans still faced intense racial prejudice and discrimination.

The Black Suffragist: Trailblazers of Social Justice explores the contribution of African-American women within the suffrage movement. Rooted in the anti-slavery movement, women's suffrage began officially in 1848 at the New York Seneca Falls Convention. Leading the charge for public awareness of a woman's right to vote, was Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who were active abolitionists. African- American women were not fully embraced by many of the women's groups.

The movements during and shortly after the Reconstruction Era focused on African Americans civil rights and integrating them into society successfully6. President Lincoln started the integration of African Americans by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation focused specifically on African Americans, and ignored the women’s civil rights movement, which was growing rapidly during the Civil War. Many people during the Reconstruction Era, such as Fredrick Douglass, viewed the issue of getting rights for newly freed slaves more important than getting females new rights. Black workers formed Revolutionary Union Movements within Detroit auto factories in the late 1960s as a means of organizing and protecting the black worker. At that time, black people were blue-collar workers, not skilled tradesman or white-collar workers, and often worked in factories as the “transformation of sweat and blood”. They realized that since they were overwhelmingly employed in these jobs, with upwards of 80-90% in some plants, they could cause a major disruption through work stoppages, causing plants to, “cease function”, and interrupting the, “money flow”. Now before I even start to address my topic I want to explain what the pro-black movement is. It is the movement that stands for the advancement and success of all black people, regardless of their age, nationality, gender and sexual orientation. Discrimination and inequality around the world is not something that can be denied. African American citizens first started out as slaves and later earned their freedom after the Civil War. However, throughout American history, black women and men faced countless amounts of discrimination from white Americans and have had their civil liberties taken away from them even thought they were free men and women. There have many civil rights movements lead by black activists to fight for black equality. However, even with so many civil rights movements, black men and women are still fighting against discrimination and equality.

They had own rights to form their individual lives and participate in voting. Even Though the power was limited, in consequence, 6 blacks served in U.S congress during reconstruction era. The Reconstruction period lasted from 1865 to 1877. The thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth amendment were created during the twelve years of rebuilding the country. All of the amendments were made to protect former slaves and their rights but on paper they did not have any rights. The reconstruction period had its successes and failures.

African-American historian W.E.B Dubois illustrated how the Civil War brought the problems of African-American experiences into the spotlight. As a socialist, he argued against the traditional Dunning interpretations and voiced opinions about the failures and benefits of the Civil War era, which he branded as a ‘splendid failure’. The impacts of Civil War era enabled African-Americans to “form their own fraternal organizations, worship in their own churches and embrace the notion of an activist government that promoted and safeguarded the welfare of its citizens.”

As the boycott was put into action, the African Americans joined forces to bring an end to segregation. The black people did many things to support the protest against segregation, however, the reaction of some of the white people induced many obstacles for the black people. The black community did not use violence to protest bus segregation for they understood violence was not going to solve their problems, so they conducted a non-violent protest. The idea of non-violent protesting meant they simply stopped using the bus system to show that they were not going to allow the white community, the government, or the bus system to continue to treat them unfairly.
