Beowulf Qualities Of A Hero Essay

An epic hero is an individual who must evoke a sense of heroism through legendary and inspiring deeds (Merriam-Webster). These heroes of tragedy have the ability to determine their own fortune due to the amount of admired characteristics they possess. However, the ideals of an epic hero are constantly fluctuating due to the ever changing ideals of society. Although the characteristics of an epic hero are under constant modification, Beowulf is still an effective modern-day hero due to his acts of courage, compassion, and dedication in relation to his people. Courage can be defined as any individual possessing moral or mental strength in the face of physical pain or indescribable hardship (Personalitytutor).

Beowulf’s quest is something he takes on his own. He travels to Denmark to fight the monster, Grendel. His main priority was to protect Heorot. Beowulf used no weapons, risking his life, to protect a country not of his own. Because Beowulf is a hero, he did this with ease and no complaints.

To be considered an epic hero, one must not only exhibit acts of courage but also perform acts of being superhuman. Beowulf, known for his great feats of strength, is considered to be one of the greatest epic heros of all time. He posses all the qualifications necessary for him to be categorized as being an epic hero. What does it take to be an Epic hero? It's a name given to few.

He did travel across the sea to kill a demon and then the demon’s mother for what seemed to be good will. Beowulf even states he is helping Hrothgar since he had helped Beowulf’s father in the past and Beowulf is returning the favor. Yet, Beowulf is still acting on his pride. He wants to defeat Grendel being that no one has been able to in the past and killing the monster for the Danes would surely bring him more honor and treasures. Beowulf never says that is why he is helping Hrothgar, but the context in which Beowulf says why he is there would suggest he cares more about glory than loyalty like he originally said.

He decides to answer the trouble and begins his journey to the monster. Grendle, who is the definition of evil is harassing the king known as Hrothgar and his beloved people. Beowulf comes to help Hrothgar, even though he doesn't know of him. Beowulf shows his selflessness and how he is ready to help. He shows bravery and courage by eventually killing Grendle.

Beowulf makes known that “no man but [himself] could hope to defeat this monster, [and] no one could try.” Beowulf wants to have this fight all to himself, so he can take all of the glory. He is too selfish to conclude that only he could defeat the monster alone. Beowulf cannot be thought of as a hero because “Beowulf only longed for fame.” Beowulf does not perform heroic deeds just to save the citizens, but to receive more admiration from the citizens.

Beowulf is willing to risk his life to protect others. He demonstrates his strength and his braveness when he battles Grendel, Grendel is a monster who has been terrorizing all the Danish people. Beowulf will be able to defeat Grendel by his bare hands, which shows that he is not afraid to confront the monster face to face. The author uses Beowulf’s victory over Grendel to show the power that Good will always be more powerful than evil. When Grendel and Beowulf were battling, Grendel was thinking of running away from Beowulf and hide because Beowulf was known to beat anyone that would stand from him and protecting his community safe “Grendel's one thought was to run from Beowulf, flee back to his marsh and hide there.”

In the beginning, Beowulf was introduced as a young and powerful warrior whose heroism is defined by his great strength.

With the battle to protect the city against the dragon, even though Beowulf was king he fought the dragon. He fought the dragon because no one else could. No one was as selfless as he was to risk his life to protect the city. Without Beowulf these monsters would over power good and there would be no balance between good and evil.

He willingly fights three monstrous creatures. Beowulf does not even carry weapons with him in his battle against Grendel; he only relies on his faith. By audaciously fighting a ferocious beast without ammunition, Beowulf gains respect and protects Hrothgar’s kingdom and demonstrates the need for courage among true

Beowulf: Epic Hero or Proud Fool? So what exactly is a hero? A hero to most is a person idealized for their courage and their outstanding achievements and qualities. Some may even consider Beowulf a hero due his never backing down and risking his own life for the safety of his people.

Beowulf is part of another tribe and is willingly offering to help the Danes. This shows that providing protection and safety to the people, even those of another

As Beowulf has a bond to Hrothgar because of his relationship to his father Ecgtheow, he chooses to journey to her realm which is under gloomy monster-infested waters and face her. Beowulf is a warrior who is bold, brave, and unafraid of challenges. In this grueling battle Beowulf comes close to perishing, as his sword Hrunting fails him. However he finds an ancient sword in the cave and uses it to kill her. He was setback by the loss of the sword but he prevailed and defeated the troll-dam.

Beowulf went through so much to prove he was worthy enough to protect their kingdom and defeat Grendel. The story Beowulf was a great story to read and a great movie to watch; however, the battles were very eye catching and had a lot of extravagant and heroic doings of Beowulf. The first scenario that I’m going to discuss in the movie and story of Beowulf is The Battle with Grendel. In the movie Grendel attacked Beowulf in the Heriot while everyone was dancing and singing.

Even when he saves countless lives, the hero never intends his quests to benefit anyone else than himself. This is constant throughout the book, and not even at his deathbed does Beowulf acknowledge something that is not about him or gold. He is often preoccupied by money and fame, but the wellbeing of other people is not in his vocabulary. For example, when a dragon begins to terrorize his kingdom, Beowulf 's first thought is not to protect his people. Instead, he says, "I 've never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles.
