“He awoke in the basement of Gacy’s home his body naked and pressed into a pillory like rack which held his arms and head. John Wayne Gacy a powerful, heavyset man was also naked, his fat, hairy belly sticking out obscenely. Gacy showed his victims various whips and instruments of torture along with number of strange looking sexual devices explaining lasciviously how he intended to use these implements on him. The assaults and torture went on for hours” (Nash 1247). A candidate that measures up to this disturbance would be the monster from Beowulf, Grendel. Grendel tortured and killed his victims brutally too showing no mercy like John Wayne. Grendel and John Wayne both were massive physically making it easy to overpower anyone who tried to fight back”. John Wayne Gacy Jr. was born on March 17, 1942, to middle-class Marion and John Gacy Senior in Chicago, Illinois. His mother was Danish and his father was Polish. His father was an abusive alcoholic with a violent temper that often led to him beating his wife and children, the beatings were usually with a razor strap. John’s beatings were usually so brutal that he ended up in the hospital most of the time and was suffering from blackouts caused by seizures. Since John’s medical condition was never diagnosed Sr. often accused Gacy of fabricating illnesses even while lying helpless on a hospital bed.

There were more than 119 serial killers in the 70’s (The Decline of The Killer), some more infamous than others, one of these infamous killers is John Wayne Gacy, he was known for sodomizing young males between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one then killing them(Crime Museum). John Wayne Gacy was, in my opinion, by far the most twisted and sinister serial killer in American History. He was a prominent businessman in Cook County, Illinois, in a suburb of Chicago. His victims were all his lovers, and he killed to cover his homosexuality and to satisfy his sadistic need on top of his need for control. Gacy had an abusive and alcoholic father, who abused his mother as well as his older and younger siblings, 3 kids in total. John was a portly child who was not athletic and did not blend well into the social scene in his school life.
John Wayne Gacy was born on March 17th, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. John Gacy and his siblings faced a very abusive childhood with a drunk for a father. John’s father worked at a assembly line in town and once he got home he would go to the basement and drink. Once Danish, John’s father, was far from sober he would beat the children with a razor strap if they were perceived to have misbehaved. John’s father assaulted his wife physically and mentally as well.
His actions were not condonable in any way and as a result he should receive the law’s fullest extent of punishment for what he did, which at the time was the death penalty in Illinois. As someone who had done something as horrific was murdering and raping thirty-three people, there was no amount of rehabilitation Gacy could receive so that he could fit into society. Furthermore, he had already served jail time for sexual assaults prior to his murders and already had a second chance in redeeming himself in the public eye. Attorney Karen Conti, an attorney working for Gacy, even said that “he was the poster child for the death penalty,’’ and that “everyone said: ‘I don’t believe in the death penalty, but for Gacy, yes.’” Thus, I feel that the death penalty was suitable for John Wayne Gacy’s malicious
The lawsuits filed and he go executed and he deserved it. Comparing society in Beowulf and society in Frankenstein is like comparing a simple farm to the processing plant; futuristic and totally dissimilar. Although, the core ‘monsters’ are unchanged; grotesque, horrifyingly pagan-esque beings of the dark that strike terror in to the hearts of even the stoutest of fighters and the sanest of men. In the Christian and Medieval world, monsters were human beings with an unnatural birth or a birth deformity (Stitt, 2003). The term ‘monster’ derives from the Latin term ‘monere’ which means ‘To warn’ or ‘to advise’ and ‘monstrum’ which is ‘a sign or portent that disrupts the natural order as evidence of divine displeasure’. The aspect of ‘Divine Displeasure’ is attributed almost perfectly to Grendel, the monster of Beowulf and the terror of Hrothgar.
Samin Ishraq ENGL 2130 Dr. Jenny Joczik 10 July 2023 Compare and contrast them with other well-known “monstrous” characters in film, TV, comic books, and literature. Give specific examples and include images if desired. Beowulf is an old English epic poem believed to be written in the 8th century (Britannica). The story is about a great warrior who defeated a heinous monster named Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a Dragon. Beowulf met his demise when facing a dragon and took down the dragon while also getting killed.
John was often beaten by his father with a leather belt or a razor strap (Biography.com , n.d.). John Wayne Gacy had a hard life growing up. When he was only nine years old a family friend started molesting him and he did not tell anyone because he was afraid. He also started to have seizures at the age of nine while he was in the fourth grade. For an entire year he was in and out of the hospital and he started to do poorly in school.
The common characteristics of what makes a monster have remained constant throughout society: evil, isolated, violent. Monsters have no regards for social normatives, and cause chaos and destruction wherever they go. Grendel is no exception. In Beowulf, Grendel manifests every characteristic of a stereotypical monster. He is considered inherently evil, and is an outcast; he roams alone and commits devilish atrocities whenever he pleases.
In the epic poem Beowulf, the protagonist, Beowulf, faces three “monsters” at different times in his life. The poem begins with Grendel, a monster who attacks only in the dark of night, tormenting the kingdom of Hrothgar. The last two sections of the epic detail the conquering by Beowulf of Grendel’s mother and the dragon. The battle between the monsters and Beowulf represent the theme of good versus evil in the poem, as well as the fusion of pagan and Christian ideals in the changing Germanic society. Grendel’s mother’s actions directly juxtapose the role of a woman in this time period, and the greediness of the dragon with his treasure contrasts with the virtues of what would be considered a good king.
In the epic poem it says, "Grendel's one thought was to run from Beowulf, flee back to his marsh and hide there" (Beowulf 314-315). This quote explains that the people at Meadhall believed that Grendel was startled by the way the people responded back on his attack. This makes the readers think that Grendel was not confident enough to take the people at Meadhall down because of his fearful view. In this attack from Grendel, in the novel he not viewed as if he was terrified but in the epic poem he was, however, this part of the stories was then lead by his
Argument Essay: Beowulf and Grendel Many people have read or heard of the epic poem of Beowulf, which spins a tale of Grendel, the monster, attacking the admirable Danes and their king, Hrothgar. Some may not be as aware of a book titled Grendel written by John Gardner in 1971. Gardner’s book tells a completely different account of the more familiar tale of Beowulf, from the perspective of Grendel, the monster. The narrator from Grendel portrays a more plausible, powerful story than the excerpt from Beowulf by drawing the reader in with a more emotional viewpoint from the character Grendel, making him more relatable by giving him humanlike qualities, and clarifying why certain events took place in Beowulf.
