a. This portfolio shows the educational journey through the BSN program at Western Governors University(WGU). The curriculum at WGU was very challenging, nonetheless it prepared me to become a safe and effective nurse. The BSN curriculum provided avenues to keep me up to date with safe practices and learn how to master therapeutic communication. WGU also helped me sharpen my critical thinking skills in order to make decisions quickly and provide safe and effective care to patients. As the result of my training, I am ready to embark in the field of nursing and do my best to make a difference in my patients lives. b. This portfolio will show the key aspects, including my strengths that WGU desired their students to accomplish and master. Each …show more content…
Nurses an important part of the health care team. Nurses work with other members of the health care team to provide safe and effective care. Nurses responsibilities include delegating, collaboration and guidance. At WGU I learned three distinct characteristics a nurse should have. These characteristics are: I. A nurse is a scientist in the clinical setting. A nurse should be able to use the data they are given to guide of the care of the patient. They should have good critical thinking skills as well as excellent communication skills. Now I am able to gather information and use my critical judgement to take care of my patients. II. A nurse is also a detective. Nurses must be able investigate any situation. Nurses should have situational awareness. Situational Awareness is the ability to identify, process, and comprehend the critical elements of information. That is why monitoring an observing each patient is important so that the nurse can make an effective clinical decision. III. A nurse is a manager. Nurses need to know how to delegate activities to different members of the health care team as well as know what each team member is allowed to do. Also, it is the nurse’s responsibility to provide a safe nursing environment for the patient and staff. Finally, therapeutic communication is a key feature that a nurse must …show more content…
With these changes, we as nurses are able to provide the best care possible for our patients. In the BSN program, I learned the importance of having peer reviewed research for validity. Also, I would like to one day take part in a research study at my facility in order to contribute to the advancement of the nursing field. Sound peer reviewed research is very important in the nursing field. Not just any research can be trusted. Research needs to be very extensive so that the researcher can compile the data. During my evidenced based practice course, I learned the difference between facilities quality improvement goals versus research. This may include topics such as nosocomial infections. I also learned the difference between qualitative and quantitative research. By using research, a facility can analyze the effectiveness of new protocols and
Outcome three in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program has prepared me to use analytic methods to appraise critically existing literature and other evidence to determine and implement the best evidence for practice.(Raup, King, Hughes & Faidley, 2010). For example, at the start of the DNP program, I lacked experience in research and understanding of the literature review, now I have the ability to develop, direct and evaluate quality improvement methodologies to promote safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care. Technology and the database research assisted me in forming my question, proposal, and project by providing evidence-based data and available resources. Two key examples that facilitated my growth
IOM future of nursing recommendations focus on advanced nursing practice, education and other areas of nursing profession. I see myself fitting into the IOM future of nursing recommendations to increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020. It is the fact that, I am aware of IOM future recommendation and I will be completing my baccalaureate degree before 2020. I believe that it is very important to have baccalaureate degree nurses to provide care to the patients so that mortality rates, medications errors can be minimized and positive outcomes can be achieved (American Association of College of Nursing, 2015). I am very much excited to complete my bachelor’s in science in nursing degree, and proud to be a BSN, which is providing me a advanced education, skills and qualities to be a better nurse.
1. Define research, nursing research, and evidence-based practice, and describe the purposes of research in implementing an evidence-based practice. Research is investigating and studying of materials and sources to establish facts and reach new conclusions or to report knowledge about something. Research can also mean to validate something that already exists based on some kind of theory.
• An expert thinker would be able to collaborate much better with other nurses in order to find the best way to treat a patient where as a novice would be much harder to collaborate with due to inexperience and not being able to communicate effectively. 3. Describe the phases in the nursing process, and explain the activities of each phase. • Assessment- during assessment, information about the patient is acquired through examination and questions. In this stage the nurse needs to communicate with the patient in order to gather this data • Diagnosing-
Role of the Masters’s Prepared Nurse Educator The master’s prepared nurse fulfills a variety of roles in today’s complex healthcare environment. By building on the foundation of a baccalaureate program, the masters prepared nurse brings advanced assessment and critical thinking skills to the bedside (Cotterill-Walker, 2012). Due to the rapid rate of change in healthcare, and the increased complexity of patients, the role of researcher will continue to be vital in improving patient and system outcomes. Additionally, as a nurse educator, in order to adequately prepare students for their role, it is imperative to remain up to date regarding current standards of practice.
The nurse must ensure that all staff are properly trained, medications are correct and up to date, all children must have access to healthcare, and nutritional considerations must be taken into account. Cheryl’s most important job is to make sure that the teachers caring for the children are properly trained on what to do in a medical situation or emergency.
1. NURSING RESEARCH Research is a detailed study into a particular problem, issue or concern using scientific method. It could also be defined as gathering information usually to answer a particular question or problem. Nursing research is a systematic study that provides evidence used to support nursing practices.
Nurses need the ability of fast critical thinking skills and observation of declining signs and symptoms. Nurses also must have the ability to educate
Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out. A nurse must always be the one that has their life together, especially when others do not. They are there to be the ones to hold and care for others in desperate times of need. Nurses are expected to be more than just a nurse, but rather an advocate, caregiver, support system and professional.
The concepts of this theory include function of professional nursing, presenting behavior of the patient, immediate reaction, nursing process discipline as well as improvement (Petiprin, 2016). One of the roles of a nurse is to meet the immediate needs of the patient. Patients typically present to a facility with a requirement that should be identified and met by the nurse. The nurse should be able to identify the problematic situation from the patient to be able to address the need for help. The patient develops their perception of events and circumstances based on their automatic feelings and thoughts which causes the patient to have an immediate response.
However, a competent nurse in my mind should try to avoid those personal factors while giving care to patients. The basic responsibilities of nurse are promote health and give care to patients. Even the belief of patient is different from me, I will still try to respect individual differences and give standardized care as it is my role to be fair while treating different patients and not to be judgmental. Attitude determines the altitude of our
Impact of culture on nursing profession Language and communication Trans-cultural encounters like language and communication influence the way nurses talk and behave to patients. Communication involves listening, dialogue and good interpersonal climate that develop personally with each sick person, especially in this multicultural society. Communication as defined by Loubrini Kourkouta is the exchange of information, thoughts and feelings among people using speech or signs. For effective communication, nurses are on one side and patients on the other side making it a two-way thing. The patient conveys his/her fears and concerns to their nurse who helps them make a correct nursing diagnosis.
INTRODUCTION This contextual project consist of 10 concept from the module Entitled Evidence Based Practice. Each concept will be described in terms of its meaning, will be critically analyzed for its real life application and will be followed by some reference of the current research evidence. Real life application will explore a possible relationship of the concepts with personal, social or professional life.
As a nurse, I believe one more major component in nursing is providing the patients health educations. A nurse with critical thinking and reasoning would plan the discharge care plan for the patient’s as soon as possible after admission to hospital. As for MI patient, cardiac rehabilitation is important for
Statement of Purpose As a child, I was never sure on what I wanted to be when I grew up, but was sure it was in the medical field. I would skim through my science textbook at the beginning of every single school year to try and accurately pinpoint when I would get to learn about it. The human body never ceased to amaze my childhood self. Growing up, my family was full of nurses. Both my parents, seven of my aunts and uncles, and three of my cousins all have their BSN.
