Early in the morning, before the rising of the sun, an ageing man wakes on the coast and readies himself for a morning of fishing. He goes through the routine he has accustomed himself to over the past decades. After several minutes, he sets off down the coast, watching the first hints of the sunrise lighten the sky on his left. He trudges along toward a dock, his usually spot. Upon reaching it, however, he notices something unfamiliar for the first time that day: the presence of black, sludge like material, roiling in the wake of recently arrived wave. He stares curiously, attempting to make out more clearly what it might be in the faint dawn light. As the sun continues to rise, he sees more and more of the brackish material has washed up …show more content…
Hayward were almost as notable as those he did use. For although he heavily leaned on the usage of avoidance of responsibility and corrective action in his speech, he never actually denied that BP had caused it; he did however, heavily infer that they were not solely responsible. He also categorically avoided any use of mortification, while still employing its semblance in personal terms when he stated that he was “deeply sorry” about the spill (Hayward 2005). BP’s largest failure in restoring their image was not taking the blame for the spill immediately. The public turned on them almost unanimously, but would have had been less likely to attack and ostracize BP if they had simply accepted the blame that the world had already laid on their shoulders as their own. Hayward also avoided the reduction of offense strategy; for, he appeared to fully admit the harm caused by the spill to the local environment, wildlife and economy. His only failing in this regard was to attribute blame to BP. BP failed to correctly judge the situation or correctly predict the level of public outcry resulting from the environmental harm done. Mr. Hayward claimed “to fully grasp the terrible reality of the situation” (Hayward 2005). However; if this were true, then he would likely have chosen to utilize contrition and mortification in his speech, rather than blame aversion and corrective action with a not so subtle dose of denial thrown added for good measure.
The oil spill was a terrible crisis, not only for the ocean, wildlife and local economy, but also for the corporate image of BP. I view their image restoration strategy to be ineffective in understanding the social climate of the public’s view, and even less effective at restoring faith in the company. The company chose to seek to avoid blame and focus on corrective action, rather than reduce the severity of the offense of mortify
Activity theory, as interpreted by Ph.D. candidates, Wardle and Kain, is a process that attempts to see all aspects of activity such as social interactions and use of writing and language to achieve goals. This theory is award winning. Activity theory states that for a system to be effective, the rules, community, subject, division of labor, and motives must be reasonable. These components are shown through the chosen tool of communication most often. When one area of the system is corrupted, the tool will no longer function correctly in order to communicate or achieve its goals.

SUMMARY Journalist, Nick Stockton, in the article, “Fracking’s Problems Go Deeper Than Water Pollution,” published in June 2015, addresses the topic of hydraulic fracturing and argues that fracking has more negative consequences than one might think. Stockton supports his claim first by appealing emotionally through a short summary of a recent event involving fracking and also by utilizing evidence to back up his statements. The author’s overall purpose is to highlight outcomes of fracking in order to make more people aware of issues that can arise from this common way of obtaining energy. Stockton utilizes a scientific, yet critical tone in order to create an unbiased article and appeal to his audience’s concern for the well being of the
The author wrote the two chapters in a chronological order to facilitate the understanding of all the events that occurred in the past. Daschuk used sources such as officials’ reports, statistics, and historical documents to support his opinion and give effect to his text. In chapter 6, he used a table to demonstrate the level of deaths. In addition, he included some pictures in order to demonstrate to the readers physically some aspects of his argument. This technique helps him to convince the readers.

He is able to organize his writing effectively by including details to support his main idea. Bryce used language intentionally and edited his work for spelling, punctuation and grammar.
This mistreatment caused the Cuyahoga River to catch on fire and the Santa Barbara oil spill, both occurring in the year 1969. At the time, the Santa Barbara oil spill was the largest in our nation’s history. The powerful images of both the Cuyahoga River on fire and the wildlife and environment in California being ravaged because of the deep-water oil spill helped change Americans’ attitudes toward the environment. This sprung the creation of the Modern Environmentalist
At about 10:00pm on April 20th the rig unexpectedly began to vibrate and natural gas, drilling mud and sea water began to shoot up well above floor level of the rig. The gas soon ignited and exploded causing the rig to catch fire instantly killing eight people and leaving 115 personnel scrambling for there lives. It took two days for the full rig to sink to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. Due to this it was calculated that about 5,000 barrels per day (119 gallons) of oil was spilling into the gulf per day. The tough thing of the investigation into this disaster is that the people who know what went wrong either passed away in this terrible unfortunate disaster or else have been sequestered by the companies involved.
A major theme in A&P is personal freedom. Throughout the story Updike uses metaphor for all elements in the story to implies the theme. At the beginning of the story, Sammy uses sarcastic tone to describe the customers as “sheep” and “houseslaves” which implies he is different from them in mindset. The way how Sammy talks about others shows his intellectual mind. He is not same as Stokesie who wants to be a manager one day.
Exxon had already lost a lot of reputation. Also, there was no way to mitigate the risks caused by the environment. Hence, I am of the opinion that this is not the best place for EM to build an image as a responsible environmental citizen.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Ransom responds to the first tempting by doing nothing. He wanted to join the conversation but “found himself throughout there dialogue confronted with an intolerable contradiction. Something which was and was not Weston was talking.” Satan manifests himself through Weston, and Ransom notices. From this point on Weston is not referred to by his human name alone, but by Un-man.
Therefore, I will examine the consequences of the oil spill and the reactions of the parties involved, such as BP, the government, the states involved, the fisheries and tourism industry and other parties affected by the oil spill. These consequences include environmental damage, litigation, cleaning costs and stricter
Often known as the Father of American Literature to many educated individuals, Ralph Waldo Emerson in his oration “The American Scholar” brilliantly provides a sublime example of how Emerson earned his title through the appliance of diction, syntax, allusions, and many other rhetorical devices and strategies. Indicated towards his highly educated audience, the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Emerson introduces the idea that the common class and common concepts of everyday life are becoming the future of art and literature through purpose, credibility, and tone. As many great writers, Emerson does not simply tell about his idea, but instead uses rhetorical strategies to help show his central point, one such strategy being purpose. Being focused on informing his audience of the coming days, the use of purpose can be
It directly alters language alignment with an appeal to the skeptical scientific community about petroleum’s technological benefits. It furthers its consumer base without alienating its loyal consumers by simply altering the rhetoric surrounding the product, while maintaining the integrity of the product itself. Most important of all, it follows the key advertising language strategies such as the deployment of vague statements and weasel words and the intensify downplay strategy outlined by Bill Bryson. So while opinions about the oil industry are deeply seeded in the hearts of many American consumers, the American Petroleum Industry’s careful word choice forces people to see beyond their perceptions of the oil industry to the carefully constructed narrative provided by the petroleum industry, the results of which can only be told with
