Audie Murphy without a doubt is the most decorated soldiers of world war two (WWII) and one of the most respected among all military members. Time after time, Audie Murphy displayed the true meaning of being fearless and placing the mission first. His level of adaptive leadership is nearly unparalleled compared to anyone during WWII due to his ability to be resilient, confident, and a risk taker. Coming from a poor family and low socioeconomic background, Audie Murphy had to be resourceful in getting each day and thinking how to get by the following day. After his father leaving the family, Audie Murphy decided to drop out of the fifth grade to support his family by picking cotton for a dollar a day and learning how to hunt. In 1941 his mother became ill and passed away but once again, Audie Murphy continues support his family further by managing three different jobs. This shows that Audie Murphy has the potential of becoming an adaptive leader due to his resilient nature at such a young age. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, he attempted to enlist at the age of 17 was inspired to serve his country and wanted to go further in his life from his mother passing away. Unfortunately the Marines, Navy, nor Army didn’t enlist him due to him being underage and underweight along with having a baby face, it didn’t help Audie Murphy (Murphy 2002, p. 7). However on June 30th 1942 with falsified documentation from his sister, he was able to enlist in the Army as an infantry …show more content…
Soldiers like him with their unwavering commitment to put the missions first and do whatever it takes to complete it, are the reason why the United States of America are one of the most respected countries in military power. Audie Murphy’s actions truly display what it means to be a great leader and putting his team’s well-being before
Before the age of 20 he had earned every Combat Award for Valor available in his period of service, and holding the rank of First Lieutenant. He was made Life Magazines Cover Story for being the most decorated soldier. The psychological effects of war stayed with him for the rest of his life. Though the military did not cause him majority of his post-war stress, he publically forth came about it hoping he could prod the Government into providing better treatment for other Soldiers and Veterans. Audie Murphy had dreamed of being a combat soldier all through his youth.
Introduction During World War 2 many American soldiers gave their lives or gave up something valuable that they once had for the freedom of others. Men from all over started to join in at all points in time in the War to help save a country and defeat Germany and Japan before they had a chance to invade the United States. One of the brave men that joined was Albert Sherman. Albert Sherman was a World War 2 sergeant. As a Sergeant he explored new environments, encountered many great dangers and battles, and exchanged his life for the freedom of the United States.
Although “nothing ever seemed to go right in the infantry,” Charles Macdonald shows his men’s perseverance, resilience, and discipline (Macdonald 1999, 174). These attributes imbedded from adapting to the environment in the cold, winter snow, facing adversity despite having fear, and following order even when it is not in favor, signifies the unbreakable character of the men in companies I and G. Their determination contributed to the successful completion of the Second World War, in which “life was worth living again” (Macdonald 1999, 276). This was an interesting read, and I believe it would benefit a lot of prospective military officers, prospective historians, and anyone interesting in developing a concise understanding of what life entailed on the front lines during World War
“Between 70 and 85 percent, depending on the State, People willingly put their lives at risk to save the life of someone unknown to them.” Congressional Record, V. 148, PT. 13. Within The Greatest Generation, Tom Brokaw talks about the “sacrifices” made by the men and women of the “World War II generation”. Although some people, like Brokaw, find these actions as born into and the praised sacrifices unique to this generation of Americans today.
The Effective Military Leader Warrant Officer Romero, Philip T. SPC: Captain Dearth, 1st Platoon The book “Black Hearts One Platoons Descent into Madness in Iraq’s Triangle of Death” by Jim Frederick is a true story about multiple leadership failures and six United States Soldiers from 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division who were convicted for their involvement in horrible crimes while deployed to Iraq. The horrific acts including rape as well as murder committed by the soldiers of 1st platoon were a direct result of poor military leadership. Bad leadership will corrupt any military unit.
A perfect example of this is the actions of Lieutenant Michael P Murphy, a Navy Seal SDV team commander during Operation Redwing on the slopes of Sawtalo Sar Mountain. Operation Redwing
What is courage? John Wayne said that “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” The word courageous does not accurately describe United States Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell. I have admired Marcus’ life for a number of years. His life and experiences help keep me motivated during challenging times.
From the beginning, Burgett discussed how his brother had joined the paratroopers and how his brother boasted about the exclusivity of airborne divisions. Because of what his brother said, Burgett became even more eager to volunteer for the war effort and took the steps to eventually register for the paratroopers. Since he was so willing to join, Burgett provided a zealous retelling of events that shaped the representation of his experiences. Additionally, Burgett displayed a certainty that no matter what occurred, he would become a paratrooper and survive the war. Burgett’s courage allowed his writing to be confident and sure of itself.
Someone’s most important traits aren’t usually seen till something brings it out. War causes many to experience traumatic mental, and physical abuse. In these dire moments what stays the same or changes is what truly defines someone. During World War II, Louie Zamperini was originally deployed as a bombardier, only to be captured as a POW to the Japanese. In the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, she explored his journey and struggle for survival, showing that war affects people in different ways.
A Simple Decision Making decisions in life is like growing a flower. Each and every day it may seem like nothing has changed, but later in the future, every choice one makes will lead to a blooming future. Some decision results little to no effect, while others, leave collateral damage affecting one’s life forever and those around them. Many ordinary decisions can end in regret; on the other hand, constructing a right decision can also leave great memories. The book I Am A Seal Team Six Warrior by Stephen Templin clearly interprets Howard E. Wasdin’s extraordinary life of becoming a soldier who protects the country he loves.
During Okinawa Desmond Doss carried 75 fellow soldiers to safety over the 300 feet ridge. He carried them to the ridge one by one, each time praying for one more life to help. (Doss 2) He went back every day without a weapon, weighing only 154 pounds. Even Though Private Doss was injured in the line of duty Desmond would give up his stretcher to his fellow member and help them the best that he could.
”(554) John reassured his father and told him” All you have to do with yourself is worry. ”(554) Frank knew his son had a job to do and was frustrated that he could do nothing. He watched on television as first responders and military personnel tried to find survivors. He felt proud of his son for being in the military and could look the other “men and women in uniform in the eye”(554) because his son
Many high school students often wonder what they are going to do after graduation. Some might go to college, others will go straight to the work force while a small amount will join military forces. One of these military forces the Marines will be discussed in this essay. It will inform others on what it takes to be a Marines how to prepare, and how being in the Marines may be able to help further your education. This will also inform about what your options in the Marines are.
,” another soldier yelled in return, “See what you can do until he can get here!!” The effects of war, as shown in The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, are different for every person. Not a single person is made the same despite the similarities in backstories. One never knows what he/she will do in a situation until they are faced with that decision.
Luttrell’s account of his time in the Afghani Mountains has reminded me that I should never take my life and freedoms for granted. These men died, fighting for our military and country. The least I can do is make it all worth
