At first, the speaker is described as standing on a “wide strip of the Mississippi beach,” (Trethewey l. 2) while her grandmother is standing on a “narrow plot of sand.” It symbolizes the freedom the speaker now compared to the confinement and limited opportunities her grandmother experienced. A hand at sea, although it could mean a shiphand, is an impossible rising area of water shaped as a hand, it waves the ship both literally and figuratively toward its destination, which is no longer sleep, but land. Progression in the poem is apparent. I feel intrigued and mesmerized, simply wanting to know where else the poem travels.

Jean Toomer’s “Georgia Dusk” reveals the remaining influence of slavery on a newly freed African American society. The title is especially relevant within Toomer’s poem, as it signifies a motif that exhibits lightness and darkness within the poem. “Georgia Dusk” signifies this fusion through the word “dusk”, or the time when day transforms into night. This has a possible relation to Toomer’s identity as a mixed-race person, in that he has several racial identities.

The poem “Morning” written by Billy Collins is written in free verse. There is no rhyming pattern or form. Also, the number of syllables per line and lines per section are inconsistent. Upon first reading the poem, one can assume that Collins is expressing that the morning is his favorite part of the day. Collins begins the poem by wondering why we even have the rest of the day.

Trask’s first stanza is beautifully written, it includes an image of purity with the use of the dove, a common symbol of pureness, and a description of the still undisturbed waters. She then goes on to retell memories of collecting shells and hunting jellyfish creating an image of childhood fun for the reader to connect with. All in all the first stanza is pleasant to image of happiness and innocence, while the next stanza takes a turn for the worse. In stanza two the environment darkness as a storm rolls into the previously calm bay, all light is clouded and the smell of decaying life is detected. This dark image is a crucial turning point in the poem.

I have been following the work of American newspaper columnist, George Frederick Will for the past few weeks. Although Will is best known for his conservative commentary on politics, I chose to write on columns with different topics pertaining to society today. Reading such columns showed me that there is a great deal of other issues present in the world, aside from politics. I enjoyed learning about current events in the world and analyzing Will’s literature.
