To ensure transparency as well as having a respectful partnership between Asmina, the social work values and principles can be utilised to guide practice (Chenoweth & McAuliffe, 2015). This can be done by empowering Asmina with and support and options and not making conclusions for her as she has the right to self-determination is an expert in her own life (Early & GlenMaye, 2000). It might be a difficult task for Asmina to grasp that Filmon’s actions are a crime in accordance to the Family Violence Protection Act (2008), especially as she appears to have little knowledge of the Australian legal system. Thus, it was an identifiable strength that she was able to question and draw on her mother’s experiences to question if her and her children should be ‘living like this’.
Although, as it is still early in the assessment process, in the next session discussing possible intervention orders or legislative frameworks should be a priority if Asmina’s situation worsens. However, this can pose as a challenge because Asmina originally fled from her country because of ‘war’ and the lack of help she and Filmon received from the ‘corrupted police force’.
