The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States. This document helped and hindered our government in many ways. It was successful in that Congress established a national treasury, and states had begun contributing. It was also successful because Congress created an administrative system to coordinate the daily operations of government. However, there were quite a few things that lead to the Articles of Confederation’s failure. For example, the central government, also known as Congress, was too weak. It did not have enough power. All the regulatory power was given to the states, and the states rarely complied with Congressional acts. Another downfall was that because there were so many various currencies and state
This rush to establish a working government outlined in the Articles of the Confederation made the new central government weak and inefficient, thus leading to a mistrustful
er, the Articles placed the power in the hands of the state, which led to economic troubles; but it also led to leadership shortfall. The fact that there was no independent judiciary, no leader of foreign affairs, and an inability to deal with internal and external threats made, caused a lot of problems for America. Finally, the Articles of Confederation was ineffective in making a set of rules that made legislating under this structure inefficient. Each state had one vote, therefore, states with a large population or small population had the same weight in voting in Congress. It also took nine votes out of thirteen to approve legislation.
The Articles of Confederation were the first document created after the American Revolution. The Articles of Confederation were problematic for the nation because they gave to much power to the states. For instance, the articles did not include a central banking system, no executive, legislative, nor judicial branch of federal government. Therefore, the power of the country resided in the states, and this lead to an ambiguous nation with no stability. For example, some states were creating their own money and negotiated deals with other countries that did not include all the other states.
The Articles of Confederation gave states more power which lead to a weak central government. The Articles of Confederation has some weaknesses because it because the central government lacked the power to impose taxes. Additionally, the Articles of Confederation made it hard to enforce the laws which caused the need for a Constitution Convention to be held since there was extensive debt and no control over the people to keep them in line with the laws. Federalists wanted a strong Central government by having the constitution ratified as well as a system of checks and balances. Anti-Federalists wanted the bill of rights passed to guarantee safety of right for citizens.
The Constitution The Articles of Confederation was an archetype constitution that created a nation of independent states only loosely connected together by a single congress. The founding fathers deliberately designed a nation with a very feeble central government. There was no judicial branch, no executive branch, there was no coining money, and there was no president. These were all intrinsic weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation that were entrusted to the states, weaknesses that would soon cause another rebellion. It was a confederation rather than a strong union, so in a sense we were playing with the other states on the team
Perhaps the biggest weakness of the A.o.C. , the inability of the central government to tax, was rectified in the constitution. The government now had the ability to set and collect taxes which meant that they could make their own money. This led to the US being able to pay off debts both foreign and domestic like war debt and loans. When the constitution was being drafted the colonists still did not want one person or group to have all the power but they recognized the need for a leader so the Virginia plan was created. This plan proposed a government that had 3 branches with a series of checks and balances that made it so no one person or group had too much power.
As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.
Without a strong central government, the states were able to refuse anything the government requested. People thought this would be beneficial, but they were proven wrong. “A strong central government, composed of elected officials, will be acting in the best interest of the people”(Document 3). If the government needed to raise money, they had to ask the states to contribute. If the states refused, the government had no way to collect this money.
After the Articles of Confederation failed because they failed to give enough power to the national government and congress, our founding father’s needed to reflect on its flaws for a new system to be set in place. Their new creation, our Constitution, was then set into place, and was created from a basis of the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation directly influence the Constitution by its failure by changing some of the responsibilities of the federal and state governments. The Articles of Confederation gave too much power to the states, and the Constitution changed that.
The Articles of Confederation were created as the first official government of the United States. It was based largely on the concept of the state government having greater power than the national congress. What started out being a good thing ended up having a lot of weaknesses. One general weakness is no executive branch to enforce the acts of congress.
The Articles of Confederation were a document seen as the “first” constitution of the United States. This document granted the new national government power to control the military, declare war, and create treaties between the states. However, the Articles had holes in it considering the government did not have the power to tax, create laws without at least nine states’ approval, or change the Articles of Confederation without a unanimous vote. This means that the country soon fell into debt and petty arguments between state, the new government had no control. It was time for a change.
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. I agree with this statement based on the examples and analysis of the Constitution I will soon provide. The Articles of Confederation were written during a time when the American people feared a strong national government.
Contrary to popular belief, the United States has two constitutions: the Articles of Confederation and the present day constitution. So, what happened to the Articles of Confederation? The Articles of Confederation failed for many reasons: the reluctancy of the individual states to surrender their powers to a national government, the impotence of Congress to tax the colonies in order to pay off war debts or pay veterans of the American Revolution, the inability to back up the currency coined by Congress, the institution of multiple currency as states began to coin their own money, and the lack of power to regulate trade and commerce among the states or foreign nations. In addition, the Articles of Confederation limited the executive and judicial
The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
In one hand, the Articles of Confederation had a weak central government, differing form the strong central government in the Constitution. The Constitution’s government had a structure of three different branches; the legislative, executive, and judicial branch; unlike the Articles of Confederation that had no structure whatsoever. The Articles of Confederation had many problems like, the poor international trade, poor foreign relations and a weak economy in contrast to the Constitution that only had one problem, the struggle over the ratification. the Articles of Confederation achieved the Northwest Ordinance and the Northwest Territory and according to a history website, the Constitution achieved that we had a system of checks and balances, that we had a bill of rights, and, eventually, the survival of a bloody civil war intact. Lastly, the Constitution had three compromises: the Great Compromise, the Three-Fifths Compromise and the Slave Trade compromise.
