Art Analysis: The Two Fridas By Frida Kahlo

In Self-Portrait the images on both sides of the border can be understood as the ideological tools of national propaganda. Kahlo keeps the history alive as she portrays a true vision of Mexico. Frida celebrates the cross-cultural identity that Mexico embraced after the turmoil of the revolution - a heritage of, Indian, American, Spanish, and British to just name a few. Her paintings became a connecting thread of Mexico’s history as she did not neglect tying the time in which she lived to the Aztec past (pbs.org). Victor Zamaudio-Taylor, an art historian, states that she has become "a model for Mexican Americans and Hispanics in the United States because she nurtures a sense of who [we] are and of a long history and of continuities."

In the film Frida (2002), the art of Frida and Diego is brought to life. The films displays the life of Frida and her relationship with Diego, but more than that it really gives the audience a better understanding of potentially understanding some of the artists’ inspirations. Frida illustrates how Kahlo and Rivera used their art as a tool to convey who they were as intellectuals and as human beings. Kahlo’s work resonates more intimacy and emotion, which were often influenced by events and misfortunes in her life. On the other hand, Diego used his art to display his political and personal opinions with the hopes of instigating some social progression, at an individual and collective level.

Doris Salcedo has been a well-known artist since the early 1990s. Her art has demonstrated a great verity of emotions that closely relate to expressing pain, mourning, loss, and trauma. Salcedo was born in 1958 and grew up in the city of Bogota, Colombia. She obtained her fine arts degree in the Universidad de Bogata Jorge Tadeo Lozano at the age of 22. She later earned her Masters at New York University in the year 1984, only four years after receiving her bachelors.

The 1808 painting The Valpincon Bather by Ingres, is said to be “controversial”(oil painting techniques). At first glance, one may only see the back of a nude woman. If one looked closer there is a lot of different types of elements of composition. From the curtains, to the tassels it all plays a role.

Diego Rivera is a painter and a muralist who had an abstract style in his work. Most of his themes were depicting the lives of the Mexican people. As for Frida Kahlo, she is a self-portrait artist whose style was representational. Her themes were depicting her agony of her medical condition and the sufferings she went through on her miscarriages. The animals in the paintings include a cat (signifies on being catty), a monkey (substitute for children she could not have), a butterfly (transformation), and her thorn necklace that pierced her flesh (shows suffering). These animals and objects created a spotlight on her emotional and physical pain throughout her life. Such as these events that we are able to discover in Frida Kahlo ’s artwork, metaphors are used to fill semantic gaps when new concepts emerge, just like how it is being used within science. When an image gets produced, it becomes a reference point for other images and the meaning will change according to how the individual will view it.

The two women kneeling down in their bulky bodies symbolize strength and perseverance. Being a laborer during the Mexican Revolution meant that one had to be tough and resilient in order to survive. Rivera’s depictions of the two women symbolize Mexico’s triumph over the Mexican Revolution. He wanted to create paintings that spoke highly of his country after being hired to do so by the government of Mexico. His purpose was to inform the natives of Mexico that even in times of struggle, they still are strong enough to

In the Two Fridas, we see two different characteristics of the same person, eventhough they represent two different people. The Frida on the left illustrates herself in a traditional European dress with a cut exposing her broken heart. On the right side, Frida is in a Mexican attire dress with a full beating heart and is holding a picture of her now ex-husband Diego Rivera. Frida choice of colors for this painting are dark and creates a sense of yearning for someone.

She painted this to represent how much she thinks of Diego. He was always on her mind; that’s why he is painted on her forehead (The Art Story). The curvilinear lines extending from her face are supposed to symbolize a web. It’s the web she wishes she could trap Diego in (The Art Story). The costume she is wearing a traditional Mexican dress that Diego loved.

The lining in the skin makes the painting look more realistic and the lighting brings out the dimensions very well. The lining is overlapping which shows the movement in the painting. The triangle shape begins at the top of Mary’s head and down the back of Jesus contacting to the bottom of her hands and coming around her shoulder. Spacing is very important

This essay examines one of the many self-portrait paintings by Frida Kahlo called ‘broken column’ (1944). In this painting Kahlo portrays herself as a complete full bodied woman while also reflecting her broken insides. She stands alone against a surreal barren fissured landscape that echoes the open wound in her torso. A broken stone column replaces her damaged spine and is protected by a white orthopaedic corset, while sharp nails pierce into her olive naked flesh. Frida is partially nude except for the corset and white bandages.

Rivera was a successful artist and member of Mexico's communist party. Infamously known as a womanizer, he and Kahlo suffered a turbulent marriage. After her and Rivera's first divorce Kahlo decided to renounce her femineity. Kahlo captures this experience through the artwork of "Self-portrait with cropped hair" (1940). The artwork is an oil on canvas work conveys Kahlo's self-punishment for her failed marriage to Rivera.
