At least 303 lives of African Americans were lost due to police shootings in 2016. Why is this number so high and why is it growing? Many people believe the brutality of police and authorities has grown stronger in the past several years towards those of color, and that it is becoming incorrigible. Back in 2012, the life of Trayvon Martin was lost suddenly due to a watch captain of the neighborhood, George Zimmerman. Zimmerman had claimed to see a “suspicious person” and was directed to stay in his SUV, however those orders were not followed.

In the media it is not uncommon to hear stories about celebrities and the uber-wealthy being acquitted of crimes that the common person would be convicted of. For instance, last year Caitlyn Jenner rear-ended a woman after speeding on a rain-slicked highway. The woman died in the fatal crash, and charges of vehicular manslaughter were brought up against Caitlyn, yet the Los Angeles District Attorney dismissed the charges. Ethan Couch’s case is similar except it easier to place blame on the teen as his blood alcohol level was measured at three times to legal limit while he was speeding, the crash resulting in the the deaths of four pedestrians and brain damage to his friend. The Brown and Goldman families filed a civil suit against Simpson, and on February 4, 1997, the jury found Simpson "responsible" for the deaths. The families were granted $33.5 million of Simpson’s money due to wrongful deaths. Currently, Simpson is serving 33 years in Lovelock Correctional Center prison for robbery, kidnapping, and other charges. The reason O.J. was found not guilty of murder and acquitted in criminal court, but found guilty of the tort of harm and ordered to pay damages in the civil court lies in the structure of our legal system, in regards to criminal cases and civil cases. One way the LAPD ignored the law is when they entered OJ’s home without talking to OJ, and without a search warrant. This resulted in an illegal search where the evidence that was found would not be admissible in court.
