As there were sectional differences among the Union and Confederate states, the Civil War altered and affirmed American principles as a result of presidential decisions that were inspired by events occurring in the war. After slavery, African Americans in the south were in a time of change. Though they were free from slavery, whippings, and auctions, I believe life became difficult for them even after slavery ended. Racism began to grow increasingly, as many could not accept the fact that there was no more slavery. It became stricter when the government in the South enforced laws called Black Codes. Those laws were set to grant only certain rights to people of color.

Post Civil War, African Americans started to gain rights to gain rights, and soon gain rights equal to whites. While there were some people/things standing in their way (KKK, Black Codes), in the end they got what they needed; Equality. Many acts and laws were passed to aid the new rights now held by African Americans, as well as the numerous people willing to help. New Amendments were added to give African Americans rights after the war, all giving them some equal rights to whites. The first of the three added was the Thirteenth Amendment, it gave African Americans freedom from slave owners, and stated that no one could be kept as a slave in the U.S..

The Fourteenth Amendment (Amendment XIV) The amendments were put into place to protect the rights and civil liberties of all American citizens from the federal government. However, prior to the fourteenth amendment, there was no certainty with the constitution. The constitution did not state in a clear enough way who was protected under it and exactly what rights you had as an American Citizen. The thirteenth amendment stated that all former slaves were granted freedom. The reconstruction period, “did create the essential constitutional foundation for further advances in the quest for equality”. It laid the building blocks for the future building for civil rights not just for blacks but women and other minorities. Former slaves, “ found comfort in their family and in the churches they established”. Blacks took community in each other and bonded over the mutual idea of freedom .

During the period of the 19th century Africans Americans were held captive because their rights as citizens had always been out of there possession. Freedom was no option until Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 which declared that “all persons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” (Archives.org, 1999). The 13th amendment was passed by the U.S. Senate on April 8, 1864, but unfortunately it died because the House of Representatives rallied for States rights. The ratification of the amendment came about 8 months after the civil war, but it represented the highest of the struggle against slavery.

It was a big disturbance for Abraham Lincoln to get the amendment approved however, he got it approved. The Thirteenth Amendment ended slavery for all. The United States of America was in disorder when the amendment was passed, due to conflict and the Civil War. Lincoln knew that the war was because of slavery problems. If the South was defeated, he hoped ending slavery would be the end of the conflict.
