Throughout my research for my argumentative essay, I have come to a conclusion that labels on foods are confusing for most people, they are not clear enough and they make people second guess what they are buying. This problem has caused people to have real life issues and has caused this world to make some problems even bigger. I want these sources to help me argue that this is a big issue and that there is way to fix it. My research goals are to find sources that will provide the meaning of each words on the labels, discuss what problems these labels cause such as people to ruining their healthy lifestyle, causing people to have trouble finding out if they are allergic to the food, and causing people to waste more food. This source has helped my research a lot because the survey they put on this source states how many people want to live a healthier lifestyle but cannot because they have trouble understanding what foods are healthy and what aren 't because they don 't understand what is being said on the nutrition labels. This source also states that these confusing nutrition labels don 't just make it hard for people who are dieting but it also hard for people who have allergies or sensitivity to some types of foods. The nutrition labels don 't state clear enough of what is actually being processed into the food. I also chose this source because it says that ingredients are a major part in how consumers pick their foods. On most food labels the ingredients are so small that most people cannot see what it says. I suggest the ingredients should be a little bigger and definitely put into bold because people have the right to see and to know what is put into the foods they are consuming. In “The Pleasure of Eating” Berry suggests people do not take the time to know the facts of what they are eating. People now do not want to take time to cook a meal, but instead want a fast meal to eat quickly in a busy day.(Berry) Not only does this show less appreciation for healthy foods, but it is allowing processed foods to become popular and allowing them to sell more, damaging people's health. Within the movie In Defense of Food, Michael Pollan attempts to tackle the question of what we “should” eat. As simple as he can, Pollan examines that question in depth, trying to push through the supermarket, good industry, diet industry, and another place people go to find and choose the food they eat. I wouldn't say its a guide on specific foods that will increase your health but more towards the line of philosophic view on what “food” has become in the united states and also comparing it to other countries around the world. Pollan feels that us complicating the food around us is not benefiting us, but hurting us. The Canadian Food Guide is a prominent feature in society but carries many problems. Sharon Kirkey points out three main problems regarding the Canadian Food Guide such as how outdated it may be, how it does not address certain issues like obesity, and how it ignore the context of eating. The documentary, Food Inc., takes a deeper look at the food industry and how it has changed over the years. The McDonald brothers played a huge part in changing the food industry forever. The brothers began to run their restaurant in a factory style. Each worker only had one specific job to do. Because the workers were assigned simple tasks, they were all paid a low wage and were easily replaced.
I attended that Klamath panel on Food Security and found it to be a very interesting discussion. I wish that they had been able to spend more time on questions and discussion but feel that I learned a lot from what I did hear. The argument that the status quo has caused food injustice has strong support and seems to be well rooted in fact. The panel its self was grate because it had representative from a several different organizations and tribes which allowed us to get a good view of the problem from various prospective. One thing which I thing could have improved the panel was if they had someone who thought that there was not a food security problem to prevent any bias.
