According to Eric Lott (Love and Theft: The Racial Unconscious of Blackface Minstrels), blackface both in minstrel show and later in movies “spread misconceptions and stereotypes, and was used as a tool to define what constituted ‘blackness’”. One of the impact of The Birth of a Nation was the revival of the Ku Klux Klan. Those stereotypes were composed of a negative portrayal of African-Americans, represented as “idiotic, classless, child-like, unsophisticated, ignorant, violent, sexually aggressive, depraved and morally bankrupt characters” (The impact of negative stereotypes and representations of African-American in the media and African-American incarceration, by Tamara Thérèse Johson) and archetypes popular in the days of slavery and of the minstrel show became even more popular with the new medium of cinema that spread those visions to a larger audience (beginning right in the early 1900's). The purpose of the Coon was to make the white audiences laugh, being a source of humour and amusement. There was three categories of it: The pure Coon, most degrading stereotype in which African-Americans were represented as good for nothing, lazy, eating watermelons, stealing chickens, unintelligent and dull witted, describes Bogle. The second category was the pickaninny, the first coon to make it to movies. He or she was a African-American children considered as cute and loving, but as dense as the pure coon. They were easily recognizable with “eyes popped, whose hair stood on end with the least excitement, and whose antics were pleasant and diverting” (Bogle). The general argument made by Peter Catapano in his work, “Performing Race on the Great Divide”, is that minstrelsy has been a significant topic that’s been examined upon by many intellectuals. More specifically, Catapano argues that minstrelsy has influenced the field of race and entertainment. The Minstrel show set the stereotypes for African Americans in the 19th century. With the shows mimicking demeanor and use of black face, the minstrels showed the way they believed African Americans acted. The interlocutor would wink to the audience to establish the mutual understanding that the performers are differentfrom the audience but only because the performers are in the blackface. Acknowledging that the blackfaced white actors are only in black face and are not actually “black” is an important destinction that entertains the white audience and performers. The mintrels would say that the performance was not aimed to discuss the direct connect between the white mintrel performers and the African Americans.

The coon, which was short for raccoon, was a derogatory word used to describe free adult African Americans. It represented how White America viewed free adult blacks; depicting them as lazy, child-like, slow, dimwitted, free blacks, that acted without a purpose since they did not have a master to give them a purpose through slavery, and loved to eat watermelons and chicken. It was a clear representation that slavery was a good thing for society and without slavery free blacks would act in this manner. After slavery was abolished, White America would continue to use the coon stereotype to ridicule blacks and make them feel as an inferior class of citizens.

Movies and dramas are some of the artistic innovations of the human beings. They remind us of the traditional beliefs, customs and the way of life. TV dramas, for instance, are one way of teaching people about their past using an entertaining approach where characters take different roles symbolically to pass a message to the audience. Stereotypes About African Americans That Were Depicted in the Media in the Early 1900s In the 1800s and early 1900s, there were a myriad of stereotypes that depicted African-Americans in a rather negative light. From the Mammy to the Jezebel, the Uncle Tom to the Sapphire, these pejorative stereotypes, which still persist in today’s society—only in a different form—reflected and reinforced systemic racism. The other side of the blade, "Zip Coon" was used to finish the job. The Zip Coon was used to defile the names of free black slaves in the north. A Zip Coon was apparently a fortunate northern African American who would "act white. " The coon exaggeration was one of the top characters amongst minstrel actors. In these Minstrel shows, "audiences laughed at the slow-talking fool who avoided work and all adult responsibilities"(The Coon Caricature).

A study from Texas Tech University showed other's views on African American were skewed after being exposed to negative black stereotypes through media. the reiteration of African American stereotypes (Punyanunt-Carter 244). For example, casting African American women to play the typical “angry black woman” stereotype reinforces the thought in Anglo-Americans that all black women present these characteristics. The negative view of African Americans by other ethnicities can be further proven in how, in a film, Anglo-Americans perceived Shaka Zulu as a “madman...hungry for blood” while African Americans themselves perceived the character as a, “historic Zulu,” with, “militaristic wit,” (Punyanunt-Carter 244). This piece of evidence shows the negative connotations perceived by non-blacks regarding African American portrayal in film.
