Slowly over many centuries these kingdoms come to a downfall; environmental instability, natural disasters, trade resources running out, or at times battles and wars were the causes of a kingdom's collapse.

The Ghana were able to control the route and tax people as they passed, allowing them to build up a revenue. The Ghana were often referred to as the “Land of Gold” since being extremely wealthy. The exchange of gold nuggets for protection allowed the trade of gold dust to arise since the gold nuggets themselves would be in the kingdom with the king. The Mali Empire had gold and salt mines within their empire as well, allowing them to trade with other civilizations. Gold in the empire was seen as a trade item and a source of currency, and much like the Ghana only gold dust was used in trade as the nuggets themselves would be placed in the kingdom.

The Ghana Empire was the first of the three major West African empires, and made many great progresses during its reign. However, the most important contribution that the Ghana Empire made during its rule was the advancement in trade. Because of its fine decision making in the taxing of the goods and the able rulers, Ghana was able to successfully expand its territory and become a very prosperous Empire.

During the period of imperialism in Africa all of the countries were competing for the title of being the richest and the strongest. In fact, the whole scramble for Africa was an opportunity for countries to enhance their overall economy. For example, King Leopold II of Belgium was determined to get the area of land so he can become more wealthy. France’s politicians thought that an overseas company would strengthen the country when it came to wealth, prestige, and power, so as a result they invested in land more toward the west and north-west. Britain wanted to protect their trading routes which required them to purchase land in East Africa, and they they soon discovered the rewards of the land so the were determined to obtain as much as possible.

Culture, an assortment of human activities and principles, leads a group of people with common beliefs and values; but after it was taken away by the Europeans, all they felt was lost and with no identity. (Arowolo 2010, 4) Colonialism caused an abrupt decline of culture and tradition in the colonies because the Europeans imposed a new culture on the African’s traditional one. Due to Africa’s subjugation and it being controlled by the Europeans, Western civilization and life style began shaping the colonies. (2) One can say that European culture is characterized by a Christian worldview and individualism. (7) Consequently, imperialism caused African cultural heritage to become replaced by a prosperous European-based one.

West Africa had a great history, and had 4 different climate zones because of its location. The climate zones were Desert, Sahel, Savannah, and Rainforest, West Africa was in the Sahel, underneath the ginormous Saharan Desert. One of the first empires in West Africa was Gahna, they had formed by conquering different groups. West Africans (deleted “They”) had lots and lots of gold mines, which was their key bartering tool, because they needed to trade for salt, which allows your body to store water longer, and preserve meat for up to a year. To get salt, West Africans had to trade with the North Africans, because they had a very large supply of it (deleted extra space), and how they would do that is by using the silent bartering method.
