Five years from now I will definitely remember AP English 11. In five years, I will look back at the daunting task of writing a speech and present it to the class. The final speech was a task that required me to leave my comfort zone: I had to share the reason why I dedicated a large portion of my time to practicing. In addition, It was an assignment that I have never done before. When I look back, I will be grateful for the opportunity to overcome one of my fears-public speaking. In AP English, I learned several useful lessons. First, I learned that time management is crucial. The time given to complete an essay must be used effectively. Many times I found myself waiting till the last minute to complete an assignment. Through many “all-nighters”, I was able to finally change my work ethic towards the end of the year. Next, I have learned how to identify many literary devices and implement them into my writing. In …show more content…
In the short essay, Orwell depicts a flaw in human nature-the disability to overcome peer pressure. Peer pressure causes people to follow the majority. Decisions caused by peer pressure may not end well. For the police officer, peer pressure caused him to inflict suffering upon the elephant. Personally, the short essay caused me to reflect on many decisions I have made. Furthermore, I now feel able to make decisions without caring about conforming to the norm. Ultimately, “Shooting an Elephant” has helped me understand that I should make my decisions without the influence of peer pressure. I think my main contribution to the class was a different perspective. In class, I was able to offer a different view of an argument. Although it was not always easy to clarify and defend my point of view, I was able to make the class think about another side of an argument. As a result, the class became more eclectic. In conclusion, my uncommon stance helped elicit
Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell Have you ever looked at something or someone and started reminiscing negative comments in your head about them? What about cared what others thought of you and tried to play hero to get them to like you? George Orwell’s essay, “Shooting an Elephant”, is a great example of this scenario. This essay secretly hid three key points that most written documents may or may not pinpoint on. It explains how you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, animals should be treated just as equal as humans, and always be yourself.
As a former AP Lang student, I feel that this class has been very beneficial for me in that it has allowed me to apply the techniques and strategies I learned last year toward more relevant subjects. Having the freedom of choosing topics to write about for our various essays made this class more enjoyable than the other English classes that I have taken. AP Lang focused heavily on the techniques of writing solid essays, but instead of writing about useful topics, we analyzed the short stories provided on the exams. Writing a personal narrative essay was very helpful in my college application process and allowed me to employ the same kind of strategies that I learned in class into my college essays.
I learned about thinking intentionally through AP English Language and Composition class. From the beginning of class, we talked about intentionality, both in reading and writing. Reading intentionally means that you are thinking and questioning about how the writer uses that word, phrase, or syntax to build its argument, whereas writing intentionally refers to you are questioning yourself why you choose that word, phrase, or syntax to persuade your audience. In the past two months, I started to think of how the diction build up the tone of the writer, how each sentence and paragraph work rhetorically, and how all these elements together persuade the audience. For example, I would look at the syntax structure.
AP English Literature and Composition will help me achieve my goal of learning more about
The human inclination to please others exists in this allegory through the storyteller. He only shoots the elephant with the motive to charm and delight his peers. Mankind’s tendency to dominate clearly portrays itself throughout Orwell’s work because a number of characters are yearning to monopolize. For example, the chronicler aches to prevail over the elephant so he can be accepted by those around him. This anecdote also allows readers to conclude that man cares about their self-image.
I hope to gain a lot of things from this class. I want to learn something worth learning in AP lit. I don’t know what i’m going to learn, or what to expect. I just hope it’s worth learning and taking with me the rest of my life.
Before enrolling into the course of English 111, my writing was primarily based on specific boundaries. For example, I was told that essays needed to be five paragraphs long with five to eight sentences within each paragraph. After my enrollment into this course, I have learned that the stereotype for writing an essay was not as practical as I once had believed, and that the limitations and expectations that were once implemented into my writing were essentially not correct. This course has changed my writing by allowing me to expand into broader topics in papers, such as compare and contrast essays, subject by subject, and point by point papers and outlines. I have learned now to use stronger verbs within my essays, and to open my vocabulary
As I begin to look back over these past few weeks at Bethel University, I have learned a few things. A few of the things I’ve learned was this APA style of writing, which was something very new to me. I’ve learned how to do a correct in-text citation, proper grammar, proper comma placement, and also that this is not something I can procrastinate on and wait until the last minute to try and do. Next, as I review Unit One, the very first post for this class I had a few errors that Mrs. Cindy pointed out to me.
English 10 Honors has been an invaluable learning experience filled with many opportunities to showcase knowledge and to learn new ideas. I began the year coming off a successful year in Honors English 9 where I learned important writing and reading comprehension skills. I feel this year I was successful with reading and interpreting text and I believe that I made big strides in my writing and in my command of the English language.
The diversity of student backgrounds, abilities and learning styles makes each person unique in the way he or she reacts to information. The intersection of diverse student backgrounds and active learning needs a comfortable, positive environment in which to take root. Dr. King continues by explaining, “Education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.” From back then to today’s society, kids are failing because they lack those morals that they need to succeed.
In my English 12 class, we were to write a Rhetorical Analysis on Steve Jobs Commencement Speech to the Stanford Graduates. We get more into depth to try to understand what he 's trying to portray in his speech. Writing this paper, In learned how to look deeper into it to understand how and when he used pathos, ethos, and logos. Also to Find what I love to do, and to never give up on what I really what to in life.
The power of peer pressure can evidently raise an error in judgement as it allows you to act in a manner to please others before pleasing yourself. Peer-pressure is an influential demonstration of how someone can neglect the morals of themselves in order to please others around them. This dilemma was evident in George Orwell 's “Shooting an Elephant” as the power of peer pressure forced George Orwell to shoot an elephant he originally didn’t want to shoot. Nevertheless, the power of peer pressure forced him to act out the will of others around him. This is an influential demonstration of how peer pressure can make a person neglect their own morals and consciousness just to please those around them.
I couldn 't come by your office hours on Thursday, so I thought I 'd just email you my questions. I 'm going to reintroduce myself that will lead to my questions. I am Alfredo Dela Cruz Jr. in your 4 pm, English-101 class. I have been out of school for five years, until last semester. I thought it 's never too late to start my education.
Furthermore, while safe spaces can be hubs of conversation, they are however, conversations between like-minded students (Source C). The aforementioned editor, Jonathan Sperling, reiterates the exigency in which college students must experience the plethora of distinct views, opinions, and beliefs of other pupils, in order to gain a well-rounded perspective on different subject matters. Additionally, students are able to learn and grow from these various viewpoints, accumulating an intellectual insight which will better equip them to handle “real world” challenges (Source
Reflection: Tell what makes a particular character/setting appeal to you. In the story Kate appeals to me. She is a very warm hearted teen that would do anything to help her friends. When Shep was getting blamed for Grant 's death even though it wasn 't him she was there to come up with information to prove that it wasn 't Shep and that the boys were lying to get the blame away from them.
