OUR LADY MARY OF ZION: AFRICAN DEPICTIONS OF THE CHRISTIAN MOTHER OF GOD Rachel Heiderscheidt 11 December 2015 ART 311 Riep The Catholic cult of the Virgin has spread its influence throughout the world over the centuries. In this paper, I will compare Marian imagery from three different African cultures: ancient Egypt, Ethiopia, and the Kongo people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to a typical example of Western Marian iconography in order to explore the ways in which each culture has taken existing icon types and expanded upon them, bringing their own unique cultural identity to the table. In this way, we can see not only the unique stylistic elements of each culture, but the depth of devotion the figure of Mary, and mother …show more content…
2), an icon type present in and around Egypt as early as the eighth century BCE. This type portrays the mother goddess nursing her divine son Horus from her left breast. This example from the ruins of Karanis represents the type of devotional image an Isis cult worshiper would have used for private meditation, as it is a wall mural found in a person’s home. Isis was particularly popular among young women as a protector of girls and women and a role model of how they should live their lives. In this example, deviating a bit from the usual, Horus does not nurse from the breast Isis offers, but instead gestures to his mouth, referencing his role in opening the mouths of the dead for passage of the soul. He stares directly at the viewer, contemplating them with wisdom beyond his age. Meanwhile, Isis smiles kindly at the viewer, emphasizing her ideal motherly qualities. In this and other examples of the Isis lactans, Isis is not just seated on a throne, but the shape of her body forms a throne for her son. Isis was commonly associated with thrones, and not only was her hieroglyphic depiction a throne, but the name “Isis” is thought to have meant “throne” as
His body is not exaggerated with bulging muscles, appearing like a young male man. 3. What do the terms of kouros and kore mean? Both imitating the Egyptian statues stance.
At this point Hatshepsut was in her late teens but immediately laid down her future ambitions in her use of titles modelled on previous pharaohs ‘lady of the two lands’. Whilst Thutmose III was young, Hatshepsut slowly reinforced her position by “drawing on kingly iconography, titular and actions” (G. Robins). These future ambitions came into fruition in the red granite statue from Deir-El-Bahri as here Hatshepsut is wearing a ‘nemes’, already showing a change in physical images in her early years of her regency. This transition was required if Hatshepsut aimed to fashion a difference between herself as Queen regent and the Pharaoh she aspired to be. To reinforce to her people that her claim to the kingdom was genuine, Hatshepsut needed to demonstrate to Egypt that she had an association with the Gods, and this was portrayed through the Divine Birth Scene.
The artists Alaa Awad and Ammar Abo Bakr looked to ancient Egypt for iconographic inspiration. They have a rich history to draw from due to the many traditions that have existed in Egypt over the years; pharonic, Coptic, Muslim, etc. They want their art to represent the unity the people are experiencing in mourning for their martyrs. As a result of that desire the artists use many elements from the traditions’ varying iconographic and visual programs. In the case of Mina Daniel and others we see them represented with wings.

The artist may have wanted to create a sense of balance to the portrait, but it is still asymmetrical. Overall, the Mummy portrait of Tekosis is a well-crafted piece of art. It was clearly created to remember her. She was never given the chance to fulfill the expectations given to the girls of that time, so she was immortalized in the form of a painting to forever serve the art history community. It is miraculous that this painting, being as sensitive as it is, has been preserved for as long as it has.

The Bust of Nefertiti is view as one of the most beautiful piece of art, admittedly, this piece represents femininity, beauty of the Egyptian culture, and the true power of women. Nefertiti was viewed as one of the most power women in all of Egypt, however; some would question if she was truly Egyptian. She is said to be a foreigner, but this is highly unlikely because most foreigners don’t become consorts. Nefertiti shows elegance in the Egyptian community and also in her name, which means “A Beautiful Woman has come”. As you see in this picture the artist, Thutmose, caught every inch of her beauty and confidence in this sculpture.
Statuettes, for example, this one where basic offerings to the divine beings in the late Egyptian world. Travelers regularly bought them from nearby sellers to leave as votives at religious locales. This sample delineates Osiris, divine force of the dead and image of resurrection. He wears the atef crown (a tall cap encompassed by upright quills), a mummy cover and neckline, and holds the evildoer and thrash, the badge of a united Egypt. Beside the pyramids, mummies and their pine boxes are the articles most connected with old Egypt.
It was placed in their tomb to ensure their eternal presence and provide a physical vessel for their souls. As such, the statue exhibits a high degree of idealization and formalism. The figures are depicted in a rigid and symmetrical pose, with the male figure, Memi, standing upright while his wife, Sabu, sits beside him. Their bodies are carefully proportioned, and their faces display a serene expression, emphasizing the eternal nature of their existence. The artistic style of the statue reflects the Egyptian belief in the
The Argentine Ant is a growing problem in California. The Argentine Ant is the ant usually found in someone’s house and they can be a bit of a nuisance once they settle down in a house. According to Jamie Hansen, the Argentine Ants are more susceptible to the drought than other ants, so the ants have to find more water (Ants Plague Local Residents…). This is why homeowners usually find the Argentine Ant more than any other ant.

Her body is turned away from the light, and she covers herself as if she doesn’t want to be seen, or recognized. The second figure we see in the picture, is Kairos, which is balancing on a sphere and waiting for the right and opportune moment. Kairos also carries in his hand a razor, which could symbolize his awareness of the opportune moment, and the inability humans have of recognizing him. This is why I believe, Kairos is viewed as a God.
The Argentine ant, an ant native to Argentina, is becoming a growing problem in California as the ants expand their territory. The Argentine ant is the species of ant usually found in one’s kitchen and they can be a bit of a nuisance once they settle down in a house. According to Jamie Hansen, the Argentine ants are more susceptible to the drought, because they dehydrate faster and require more water than other ants (Ants Plague Local Residents…).
