Response to Lewisetta In practice, educators use many terms or labels to discuss children and families who live in poverty. Gloria Rodriguez and James Fabionar (2010) assert that the many terms we use should serve "as a reminder of how often we are called on in education to talk about -- but not necessarily to" -- our students and their families who live with low incomes (p. 64). As educators, we must be sensitive to the effects of poverty on our students' state of mind and ensure that we separate their developing sense of self from their living conditions. As a starting point, we must be extremely careful how we talk about children who live in poverty. However, there are million of questions to ponder on over trying to eliminate poverty.
In the book, “Rereading America,” written by Toni Cade Bambara along with Gary Colombo and Robert Cullen, Bambara focuses on the challenges and desire to teach by contras of what you don’t have and what you can achieve. (Bambara, pg. 253-259) It is without doubt that even though a cookie cutter theory is used in most schools; there will be certain social economical neighborhoods in which a teacher or adult will have to vary the process of communication in order to get his or her point across with dedication and teach the love for learning. Ms. Moore had been a wise educated woman who did not avoid the challenging attitudes of children going up in a disadvantaged economical community.
When it comes to poverty and education, many children face difficult situations. In the book “See you when we get there” by Gregory Michie discusses about teaching minority students who struggle with poverty, violence, and crime. He built relationships with his students, helping the urban Chicago school system. He received positive reviews. For instance, Michie described an accurate urban school experience and allowed the students to have a voice.
Children who grow up in poverty are faced with a series of issues which impact their education and social atmosphere. In both the school and home setting these children lack the proper resources which they need to succeed academically. Across the country, people have begun creating programs which aim to help children in poverty succeed, despite their socioeconomic status. These programs range from after-school reading, tutoring services, charter schools, and free summer programs. All of these programs provide children with extra academic help which they may not be receiving in school or at home.
In preparation for this paper I chose to read Fire in the ashes: twenty five years among the poorest children in America by Jonathan Kozol. In this book Kozol has followed these children and their family’s lives for the past twenty five years. In his writing Kozol portrays a point of view most from his background and standing would not be capable of having. He portrays what life is like for those who have been let down by the system that was meant to protect them. Kozols writing style can be very blunt at times, not for shock value, but for the sake of portraying these children’s realities, and not sugarcoating the inequalities that they are faced with.
In the United States, child poverty is becoming an epidemic and getting worse by the day. Poverty is normally amongst single parent families. This social problem is becoming an issue with two-parent families as well. In the CBS 60 minutes video, “Hard Time Generations Living in Cars” describes the effects of poverty and homelessness in Seminole County, Florida. There are several interviews with different families that allows the children to describe their hopelessness.
Psychology today can tell us that the environment in which we grow up in can have an important impact on a youth’s identity and future. Growing up in not only a state of poverty, but with additional social and economic disadvantages can have an overwhelming negative influence on student’s performance. In major cities across the United States schools that poverty stricken African American students attend are segregated, not in a legal sense, but because of location. Neighborhoods with soaring levels of poverty are limited to the oftentimes overpopulated, underfunded, and understaffed local schools. Creating a culture of multigenerational families isolated in their own poverty.
I viewed Frontline a documentary series, which episode was entitled Poor Kids. The frontline personnel spent time with three children Kailey, Johnny, and Britany along with their families as they all struggle financially. We perceive a glimpse of what it is like to live below the poverty line in America through a child’s eyes. While observing the documentary, I became consciously aware that children who are considered poor or living below the poverty line were more mindful of the responsibilities of life. The children were worrisome of the lack of employment for their parents, bills, and in Britney’s case; how they would accommodate their way of living to support a new addition to the family.
Social class and poverty is a big problem that affects many children and adults. Author Gary Soto often examines this topic in almost all of his short stories and poems. One story, “Fear” is the best conveyor of this matter. In “Fear”, Gary Soto utilizes perspective to illustrate the way social class affects children in today's modern world, and explores mature themes, namely the difference between poverty and a lower socioeconomic class. Gary Soto was born in Fresno, California on April 12, 1952 to Manuel and Angie Soto.
This annotated bibliography is to inform people how poverty in America affects the education of students. We should not let this affect why our education system is failing, because education should be the student’s way out of poverty, it is a way of fighting it. We as teachers help them better themselves to live a better lifestyle and encourage them to want to get out of the poverty. We as teacher are here to remind them and support them as they succeed along their journey of fighting poverty.
In order to fully understand the effects of poverty on children’s education, people must fully comprehend the impact poverty possesses on the citizens of the United States of America. Poverty, by definition, describes the state of someone as extremely poor, however, poverty establishes a point in which an income becomes to insufficient to support certain standard ways of life and often leads to poor education. According to the US Census for 2015, more than forty-three million people living in the United States face poverty. When it comes to poverty affecting education, in 2015 nearly twenty percent of females aged under eighteen and nineteen percent of males aged under eighteen, live in poverty as they try to receive a diploma to the hopefully start a career without creating a deeper debt gap. Introduction The book I will be reviewing is Teaching with Poverty in Mind written by Eric Jensen. The book was originally published in 1950 while our copy was printed in 2009 through the ASCD publication company. This book is used in our EDUC 200 Developmental Sciences and the Context of Poverty class to give us insight to challenges that could be present with poverty and schools. Jensen’s book illustrates the story of Mr. Hawkins a teacher’s experiences and growth working with children living in poverty.
According to the PBS Frontline video “Poor Kids” 2012, more than 46 million Americans are living beneath the poverty line. The United States alone has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the industrialized world. It is stated that 1 out of 5 children are living in poverty. The video documented the lives of three families who are faced with extreme hardships and are battling to survive a life of being poor. All three families have more than one child and could barely afford to pay their bills and purchase food for their household.
Vonnie McLoyd discusses in the book Child Development that black families are more likely to face poverty in America and the effects that poverty has on those children. McLoyd states that children that have faced poverty in their lives can have “impaired socioemotional functioning” (McLoyd 311). Children of poverty are faced with many challenges in life. Educationally these challenges at times are amplified due to the environment, resources, and conditions the children encounter. Do students who come from impoverished backgrounds need to be taught differently in order to be successful learners? If we look at the Constructivism Theory, one would think so. This theory’s main concept is “that people construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences.
