Andrew Ure's Criticism Of The Factory System

In chapter 14 Eric and Walt make it to the York Factory so there journey is complete. The significance of the chapter is the pineapple they saved for the day they completed the trip. He says the pineapple might have been there lucky charm. Jock Thrid and Walt Gordon gave them a place to warm up and eat, which they are lucky for otherwise they were starting to become malnourished. Then Jock told them about the rapid ahead so they at least knew they were coming up, but it would have been nice to have the correct side to go on.

Factories were very sufficient during this time because it made business corporations gain more profit. Even though this is a highly productive way to work it destroyed individualism so this effectively work in the United States because workers were used to working alone rather than factories which paid them lower wage. In document six the author's intended audience was the labor workers and is shown by the demanding less hours by those labor workers. Labor workers demanded a reduction of work which will then give a due share of work in wages to reserve army of labor and eliminate many of the worst abuses of the industrial system. However some labor workers were not getting any work due to immigration.

Conventionally, trained artisans were working in small factories to make and complete goods while setting their hours, and often, they functioned together with the shop owner. As the factory system took hold and plants became superior, the landscape of industry transformed. Mass productions intended that labors were accountable for only a minor part of the development, executing one detailed task repetitively in the formation of a product. Many responsibilities could be accomplished just as well by unqualified workers, and skilled workers started to find themselves put out of place by lesser paid employees. The factory became a detached setting in which workers did not once saw or even recognized the owners, and where the pace of work was established by the capabilities of the machinery.

Factory Working Working in the 1800’s was hard and was very dangerous, by the mid 1800’s America was using machines to produce most things such as clothing, shoes, watches, , guns, and farming machines. The workers would work an average of 11.4 hours a day. The workers were very tired. The factories were very rugged and dangerous, there were fast rapidly moving parts exposed and that cuased many accidents with adults and children.

While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily negative consequences for society because of the dangerous working conditions with no compensation for injury, it was actually a positive thing for society. Industrialization’s positive effects were that there were more jobs, child labor laws were created, and there was better transportation. The first thing was that more jobs were introduced. This made it easier for people to provide for their family, and although everyone had to work, they were all able to get a job so they could work.

In Andrew Ure’s “The Philosophy of Manufactures,” he shows his support for the Industrial Revolution. Ure believed that all of the improvements in technology made workers’ lives easier. The new technology allows workers to produce more products in less amount of time, which would equal greater productivity, which would then equal more wealth for companies and for the country. Ure makes an argument that the people who work in factories have better lives than those who live and work on farms, because of the advanced technology that factory workers have access to. Ure also presents the argument that factory workers are not necessarily treated unfairly just because they do not receive breaks while at work.

The life of a 19th-century industrial worker was far from easy. Even in good times wages were low, hours long, and working conditions hazardous. Trying to fix the issue, many Europeans suggested much needed solutions to this problem. Over the course of the 19th century Europeans suggested that there should be equality between men women and social classes, that there should be a peaceful reorganization of social classes, and a revolution or a change in government. During the Industrial Revolution, as more factories were being built, more people were willing to do work as long as they got paid.

Industrial Revolution DBQ During the Industrial Revolution, many higher class citizens of Britain believed that factory workers had a fair pay and decent working conditions, but factory labourers actually lived in deplorable conditions with high fatality rate because of such things as dangerous machinery and cramped housing. According to the middle and upper classes, labourers lived and worked in tolerable conditions. According to Document 2, factory villages were in good condition and its inhabitants looked healthy and happy.

Something that was good about the industrial revolution was that there was more workers and people could get payed more. Things that were bad was that little kids could. That’s bad because kid get hurt for example, for kids who worked on farms would ride on horse rakes and easily fall off and get crushed. Kids would get overworked after working 12 hours a day.

Child labor was a great problem in the Industrial Revolution. Factory owners usually hired women and children rather than men. They said that men expected higher wages, and they suspected that they were more likely to rebel against the company. Women and children were forced to work from six in the morning to seven at night, and this was when they were not so busy. They were forced to arrive on time and they couldn’t fall behind with their work because if they did they were whipped and punished.

Industrial capitalism robs labourers from their human capabilities and what they can contribute to the world. Workers will lose a sense of themselves and of who they are, instead of fulfilling their needs, they deny themselves, rather than feeling joy they are depressed, they are also mentally and physically
