Andrew Jackson Essay “Never take counsel of your fears Once said our seventh president, Andrew Jackson”(USA Patriotism! … President Andrew Jackson’s Famous quotes). Andrew Jackson made problems with the bank, took federal jobs, and removed the indians. Andrew Jackson does not deserve to be a part of The American Historical Society. Andrew Jackson caused a lot of problems with the Second United States Bank. Jackson did not like the idea of paper money replacing silver and gold, but we eventually did and we are doing fine with paper money right now. He called the new money “soft money” in place of “hard money” which was silver and gold (The War Against the Bank). Jackson pushed people to believe that only gold and silver provided proper security (Andrew Jackson: The Bank). Andrew Jackson thought that the government should be a part of the Second United States Bank, but Nicholas Biddle, the Second United States Bank’s president, knew that the government should not be able to control the economy, which I agree with (Andrew Jackson Takes on the Bank of the US). The senate approved a charter for The Second

He would fire elected federal workers and replace them with people who supported him (Appleby. Page 340). It is not fair that unelected officials should carry out laws. The fired employees charged Jackson for being a tyrant, Jackson just told them that it was best for democracy, which was a lie (Appleby, Page 340). The replacement of government officials with the election winner’s supporters is called the Spoils System (Appleby, Joyce Oldham. Page 340). This name was formed by one of Jackson’s supporters saying “To the victors belong the spoils”, the victors being Jackson’s supporters and the spoils being the jobs they get from firing government workers (Appleby, Joyce Oldham. When Andrew Jackson became president, he introduced the spoils system. This practice replaced government officials with the winning political party’s supporters. Jackson thought that the spoils system was democratic because it prevented government officials from the opposite party from becoming a powerful aristocracy. The spoils system was made famous from the speech given by Senator William L. Marcy of New York. To criticize Jackson’s political appointments, Senator William replied, “To the victor belong the spoils of the enemy.”
Andrew Jackson is one of the reasons we have the world’s most trusting economic system. For instance, Jackson saved our country’s money by not allowing a second Bank Of The United States to be formed. On History.com “The war on the Second Bank of the United States and subsequent hard-money initiatives set the tone—an unyielding effort to remove the hands of a few wealthy, unelected private bankers from the levers
To begin with, President Jackson knew that before he could input any of his desired policies he had to have a fresh new start in his government. He sincerely felt that Congress wasn’t representing the American people he was always concerned about. At the start of his presidency, he got rid of senior federal officeholders that had previously served under several presidents. He replaced these officials with his own Democratic supporters. This way of selecting people for government jobs came to be called the “spoils system”.
Then, Swartwout stole 15$ million dollars from Jackson. Of course, this hurt the economy. In this situation, Jackson was not thinking about the nation and what's best for it. This also ties in with “Spoils System document 2” because this document talks about giving men less time in office. He felt like getting rid of time in office, Jackson also called time in office “plain and simple.”
3. It is clear that Jackson saw corruption and loopholes in the proposed charter for the federal bank. He despises those who believe they are too big for the law and those who think they are invincible. He saw too much possibility for injustice in the proposed charter. It is evident that he kept the working man in mind during this
Andrew Jackson, also known as Old Hickory, was a bad President of the United States of America, March 4, 1829 – March 4, 1837, because he made the Native Americans move from there land through the Trail of Tears. He was also a slave owner, and he used his presidential power against people of color (non-whites). He was against women’s rights in America. The way that he controlled the appointments to office and the right to have privileges changed that way that people saw that Republic, and I wasn’t a change for the better. He was very unprofessional with the way that he chose the other governmental job positions.
It is clear from the documents that Andrew Jackson acted like a king. One reason that Andrew Jackson acted like a king was he forced the Cherokee out of their homelands. In document 4, the political cartoon depicts Andrew Jackson is stepping on two controversial issues, The rechartering of the National Bank and the Supreme Court ruling against the Indian Removal Act because it was unconstitutional. Mr. Jackson clearly ignored the Constitution and the Supreme Court completely because the law was passed anyway. Because of this, many Cherokee families were forced from their homes and moved west to Oklahoma through a march known now as the Trail of Tears.
All the while, President Jackson never changed this practice for the benefit of the people. In the Spoils System document one, there is an illustration created in 1877 depicting Jackson riding a pig followed by the caption, “ To the Victors Belong the Spoils”. This was created to show people that when citizens of a nation truly do not get to decide who is in office, the country is doomed to a system of anarchy. The document told people that Andrew Jackson was not trying to give people a chance to share new ideas, just to get enough votes and voices in for him that he could do anything he wanted to. Since the people were not in support of the Spoils System, Jockson would become an autocrat for only wanting to claim ultimate power over the people.
Andrew Jackson deemed himself a defender of the U.S Constitution. In his mind he believed that with every step he took, the decisions he made were for the people and their freedom. For example, he removed the bank of the U.S when it came up for rechartment during the month of July in 1832. He saw the bank as a “monopoly of the foreign and domestic exchange” and believed the wealthy were using it to make themselves richer (Document B).
One example of this is that he believed the people should be the ones to directly elect the president. As stated in the source: Robert Remini, Andrew Jackson and The Course of American Empire, Vol. III, 1984 “He proceeded from the idea that all offices - whether appointed or elected - must ultimately fall under the absolute control of the people. Appointed offices should be rotated, preferably every four years. Elected offices must be filled directly by the people.
Andrew Jackson has been described as a great hero of his time , but he was a man who was atrocious and destroyed the Union. Andrew Jackson accomplished a great number of things during his life but some of his actions were quite questionable. Looking from the present to the past gives insight into areas where the events can be examined more objectively. However, it is vital when examining past events to keep in mind the mindsets of the past. He thought about himself but not about others.
Chapter 1 In the broad field of American biography, there are found but few names more prominent than those of Generals Andrew and Thomas J. Jackson. As these remarkable men represent different generations, and belong to different periods of history, their similar traits of character are not distinctly discernable by a casual observer. It is believed that by contrasting them a nearer view will be obtained that may prove interesting and instructive to all intelligent readers. Being descended from the same stock, the striking similarity of character that General Thomas J. Jackson, or General Stonewall Jackson, as he is best known, bears to General Andrew Jackson is doubtless due to their common origin.
Andrew Jackson has been remembered as a ground breaking president, even being put on the $20. President Jackson was a controversial figure, doing many popular and unpopular things in his time. Although he is remembered as a hero from the war of 1812, he also caused the Trail of Tears and tried to destroy the National Bank. As a result, Jackson should not be put on the $20 bill. His actions have caused many misfortune showing that villains do exist.
One of the biggest thing that Jackson had done as a president was in 1832. Jackson vetoed a bill that would renew the second bank charter early. Jackson stated “I will kill it!”. He said this because he didn’t like the bank at all and he believed that it made the rich richer and the poor poorer. He said in his veto message “It is easy to conceive that great evils to our country and its institutions might flow from such a concentration of power in the hands of a few men irresponsible to the people.”
Born into a non-aristocratic poor family, somewhere in the Carolina’s on March 14, 1767, was a man named Andrew Jackson. Jackson, also called “Old Hickory” was a very bold proactive man in American history. From being a military hero and founding the democratic party to enacting the trail of tears and dismantling the of the Bank of the United States, the man and his legacy are a prominent topic for scholarly debate. Some believe he was a great president and some believe he was the worse president. But if you look at it from a moral perceptive or in the eyes of a foreigner, Jackson’s legacy was far more villainous than heroic.
