Andrew Jackson: A Corrupt Bargain

Opinions are controversial, period; but when you mix politics in it, it gets messy. Andrew Jackson might have thought some his decisions wise, but ended up being the opposite, or vise-versa. My thoughts on Andrew Jackson are: I was in favor of some things he did, but others not so much. When you work in politics, you honestly can’t make everyone happy, so I couldn’t expect Jackson to be perfect.

Although Jackson seemed to have won a narrow victory, receiving 43 percent of the popular vote versus just 30 percent for Adams, he was not the country's sixth president. Because nobody had received a majority of votes in the electoral college, the House of Representatives had to choose between the top two candidates. After losing the Presidency to Andrew Jackson in 1828, John Quincy Adams was elected to the House of Representatives where he served until his death in 1848. The Corrupt Bargain: After losing, Clay had led some of the strongest attacks against Jackson. Because Clay hated Jackson, he would have rather seen John Quincy Adams as president.

James C. Curtis’ “Andrew Jackson and the Search for Vindication” was actually a well thought out and interesting book. Curtis obviously does his research, and the story is very detailed. It is very easy to get lost in the story. Although some parts were really boring and some sentences were run on sentences, but for the most part it was a good story. Curtis wanted the readers of this book to have the whole perspective of Jackson’s life, and where he comes from.

They began to realize that the government was mostly controlled by the wealthy and mostly benefitted them. In the 19th century, American politics started change drastically from the old system which seemed to be fading away. The idea of democracy was born in America through the influence of politicians. The American people started to realize their place in the growth of the country. They realized that their involvement in politics could benefit them. Andrew Jackson for a time was the face of democracy to the American people.

Does anyone know Andrew Jackson? Andrew Jackson was the most popular president in the history of the United States. Andrew Jackson was not popular because he was elected the seventh president of United State. He was popular because he cared about all people including Native Americans. During the Age of Jackson from 1820 to 1830, Jackson saw himself as the President of the People.

Andrew Jackson's popularity in the Democratic Party, both in the South, and West was due to his success as a general in the War of 1812 during the battle of New Orleans drove him to run for President in 1824 and 1828. His popularity gained after the “Corrupt Bargain” during the 1824 Presidential election. This election ended in a tie the first time because neither of the candidates got over 40% of the electoral vote. Jackson believed that the second round of electoral votes were rigged because most of the House was Democratic Republican and Henry Clay could sway them into voting for John Quincy Adams. John Quincy Adams won the 1824 election.

Two days before being released from the hospital, Jackson met with the unit’s lawyer 2nd Lieutenant Neville Harper. When Jackson met the young man, it shocked him to find their attorney looked more like a high school student than an army officer and never defended a real case in his life, much less a high profile one involving a senior officer. His only wins were during mock trials in law school and it solidified Jackson’s belief they were being railroaded for political purposes. In addition, the young man couldn’t tell him who the convening authority was because he’d been told the same thing, ‘classified’.

In the article “Abuse of Power: Andrew Jackson and the Indian Removal Act of 1830,” the author, Alfred A. Cave, writes about President Jackson’s abuse of power. He is arguing that Jackson abused his power when he was enforcing the Indian Removal Act. He argues that Jackson broke guarantees he made to the Indians. He uses a political methodology and uses secondary sources.

The era of Andrew Jackson which was nicknames the era of the “common man” certainly lived up to its name. As the seventh President of the United States, Jackson had a major effect on the life of the common man, in such a way that the life of the common man would never be the same again. Jackson’s aim, after the manner in which he was defeated in the Presidential Election of 1824, despite receiving more popular votes than John Quincy Adams who took on the office, was to reduce the power and the authority of the elite. When he came into power after the 1828 election Jackson began to carry out his proposals. Jackson expanded the voting right to all men, in accordance with the Declaration of Independence of 1776 which declared that “all men are created equal” instead of just the elite.

Jackson’s presidency impacted democracy, through his use of the veto power, and his claim of Clay creating a “corrupt bargain”, which is not a turning point for a rise in democracy despite him giving white male suffrage. During Jackson’s use of executive power weakened voice of the people.

The development of Bureaucracy was due to increasing citizen demand for improved government services and for the government to develop their own goals for policy. Citizens sought more government involvement, such as, regulating corporate behavior and delivering more services. Andrew Jackson’s election in 1829 also influenced the development of bureaucracy. At the height of his election, Jackson introduced a spoils system where those involved in Jackson’s campaign were rewarded with positions in government. Detailed procedures were then developed to direct new employees who lacked experience.
