The Most Dangerous Game Essay Brody W. 1A Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous Game is a classic story about good vs. evil, hunter vs. hunted, etc. This story has a very suspenseful tone. Connell always keeps the reader on his toes. The set of main characters is very simple; a protagonist (Rainsford) and an antagonist (Zaroff). Although these characters are polar opposites, they are also very alike at the same time. Sanger Rainsford is an extremely cunning and intelligent hunter. He is witty and has a sense of humor. Rainsford believes that the world is made up of two groups, the hunters and the hunted. Throughout the story, the reader can see the change in Rainsford as he converts from the hunter to the hunted. His madness derives from a life of luxury, riches, and a militarist lifestyle. He remains this way throughout the story. He has a delirious desire to make others suffer for his own enjoyment. The reader can see a sense of insanity when viewing Zaroff because of his way of treating the killing people as a “game”. He is incapable of perceiving the difference between man and beast. All of these characteristics make General Zaroff a deranged, malicious human being. Even though these characters are completely divergent, there are qualities that these two characters share. Both Zaroff and Rainsford are smart, intelligent hunters and they are both very strategic. Even though the reader can see Rainsford as the hero, he ends up just like Zaroff in the end of the story, able to sleep soundly after ruthlessly killing another human being. Both of these men are manipulative, strategic, and feral. To conclude, Zaroff and Rainsford are both very different, but also analogous at the same time. They both have their own qualities that separate them from one another, but they also have characteristics that make them seem like the same person. Even though Rainsford goes through a change and Zaroff doesn’t, Rainsford ends up just like Zaroff. At the end of the story, both characters end up as the same, barbaric type of human
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell it describes a hunter on an island isolated from the world. The man is forced to be prey for a hunter that hunts men. There are differences in the characters from the book to the movie. First off, there is a woman and a brother along with other servants are at the chateau in the movie. This makes it feel less isolated and more populated, but simultaneously it makes it feel more dangerous.
Rainsford is a witty and caring character. The passion Rainsford has, devotes his entire life to hunting, but Zaroff obsession is much more extreme, Zaroff was
When Rainsford was getting ready to fight General Zaroff, the antagonist in the story, “Rainsford still did not smile. ‘I am still a beast at bay.’ he said, in a low, hoarse voice. ‘Get ready General Zaroff’ (Connell 112). Rainsford shows how he is willing to sacrifice himself to kill the “bad guy”.
He is greeted by a man named General Zaroff. A hunter like him but something is off about him. He hunts Humans. The only animal that can reason. Rainsford is in a terrible situation.
He began as a hunter who was put into a position where he externally transitioned into the position of the prey. Therefore, when Rainsford “murders” General Zaroff, he had already unknowingly transitioned back to being a hunter, but in the confusion he still considers himself the prey. This displays the predator-prey relationship in which the predator can mistakenly becomes the prey and vice
In the story, "The Most Dangerous Game," there were two main characters, Zaroff and Rainsford. They are very memorable characters indeed; they make quite an impression. I am not satisfied with the ending, because the author does not describe the killing scene. Instead, he starts off the ending with Zaroff meeting Rainsford in his bedroom, Zaroff explaining that one of them will soon die, and then jumps to “He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided” (Connell 13). Although I do not want to know the gory details, I would still like to know how Rainsford accomplished murdering Zaroff. Despite my wishing of more detail, I would not change the ending of the story. I feel that the author did a good job of leaving the readers on the edge of their seat, creating a strong urge to know
Inhumane. This word, inhumane describes both General Zaroff from The Most Dangerous game, and it also describes President Snow, from The Hunger Games. Both General Zaroff and President Snow were sick people, and had terrible theories. Although General Zaroff and President snow are not exactly the same, they have many similarities and differences.
General Zaroff pretends to be a civilized person just living on a deserted island, but in reality, he is a cold-blooded murder. General Zaroff tricks Rainsford into a false sense of security only to throw him into the jungle and force him to participate in his disgusting game of hunting humans for amusement. Rainsford has to stay alive for three days in order to live, and he has to fight for his life during the hunt. In the end Rainsford is able to win, and by doing so gains knowledge that changes him. Rainsford is a dynamic character because he changes from being apathetic towards hunting animals, to empathetic towards hunting animals.
Both Rainsford and Zaroff share common passions, skills and ideology. Initially, there is admiration between both characters, but their similarities become the cause of the conflict. Rainsford murders Zaroff and has put an end to the murderous human
In the short story The Most Dangerous Game, the author Richard Connell shows that Rainsford needs control of his emotions, patience , and expert hunting and decision making skills in order to defeat Zaroff. Rainsford needs to gain control of his emotions to outthink Zaroff, who symbolizes Rainsfords "steep hill". When he finds that he is going to be hunted his natural instinct is to run and panic, but then he stops to look around and get a grip on the task at hand. Then at a critical moment when Zaroff finds him in a tree, Rainsford panics again because he realizes Zaroff is on his trail and is toying with him. Once again, he gains control of his emotions and formulates a plan.
General Zaroff is different, to say the least, in Richard Connell’s book, “The Most Dangerous Game.” Rainsford is stranded on a deserted island, or so he thinks. Rainsford comes upon a mansion that is owned by General Zaroff. He knows of Rainsford, who is a renowned author of a book about the hunt, as well as everything and everywhere Rainsford has hunted. General Zaroff is also a hunter, but he goes to the extreme.
Rainsford changes for the worse from a hunter to a murder following in Zaroff's
But we should also never underestimate ourselves and never hold ourselves back. Rainsford represents the part of us, focused and does not give up on his goal because it is to difficult. Although General Zaroff represents the dark or extreme side of us, not showing pity towards others, becoming lazy, and inferring Rainsford has died therefore not caring about his
