Imagine showing up to church, nothing different from every other time you arrive. However, this time when you show up, you notice flames and pure destruction. Today, this scenario seems make-believe, however this was not the case in Sighet, Transylvania in 1941. According to Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night, once the German soldiers arrived in Sighet, many norms were altered, such as their laws and attires. Eli Wiesel uses night as a motif in the memoir Night in order to convey an underlying message about the increase of darkness, possibilities of death and lack of humanity once non-authoritarian members arrive.

In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel a message was, not listening to warnings and not taking action will inevitably bring you a life of sufferings. In "Night," Elie Wiesel talks about Eliezer during World War II's Holocaust period. Initially, we see him thriving in faith studying the Torah and having dreams of becoming a rabbi but then the Nazi army invades Romania which quickly changes his life and eventually changes his faith. At the start, Eliezer is confronted with unbearable difficulties as he witnesses countless Jewish individuals suffering and dying in concentration camps such as Auschwitz. Eliezer's experience at the concentration camp was marked by brutality that shattered every last gram of innocence he had held onto before being sent there.

In Night by Elie Wiesel, the townspeople of Sighet shrug off the events foreshadowing their deportation. They first ignore Moishe the Beadle’s attempts to warn them about the situation. As a foreign Jew, he already experienced the expulsion from the town. Nobody believes Moishe because of the implications of his words being true. He mentions death, a taboo subject that humanity avoids at all costs, which I suspect is a form of survival instinct.

In the memoir “Night”, by Elie Wiesel, Elie talks about the harsh conditions of Auschwitz, the worst concentration camp located in Poland. When he first got transported to the camp, he was an innocent boy. He had faith in God and heavily cared about his father, he would soon leave both of those traits behind. When Elie found out that the Nazis were burning and torturing his people, he started to wonder if there even was a God. On the first night, Elie heard someone praying to God, he wondered why he was doing this even after all hell and murders surrounding him, “The Almighty, the eternal and terrible master of the universe, chose to be silent.

To begin, our interactions define us when we believe in a religion because it is what we have hope and faith in. In the excerpt “Night” by Elie Wiesel, Elie is in a concentration camp where he begins to lose his faith in God because he has seen things that he wished he had not. The texts says, “Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever ”(Wiesel 37). What this quote shows is throughout the time when Elie was at the concentration camp he saw the way people were being burned alive and thrown into the flames. This shows interactions by how the Jews were treated in a negative way.

This moment in the book provokes feelings of sadness and pity. The Jews had been so packed in these barracks after the marches, that men we piled on top of each other, dead or alive, it became so hard to breathe that many of the men suffocated to death. Elie was one of the men who was buried beneath all of the people. He was trying to get air when he heard the boy beneath him shouting “You’re crushing me… mercy! mercy!”. The boy was the violinist from Buna named Juliek.

In Night, Elie is taken to different camps, and during his stays he witnesses horror and tragedy. Elie’s whole family ends up murdered… all but him. Elie came out of the holocaust mentally stronger due to silence, family, and evil.

“The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing,” said Eva Burrows. Jews were known for their traditions, they celebrate Passover Seder, a family gathering to eat a meal of bread and wine. However, these traditions were broken with the tragic Holocaust as many Jews were being separated from their family and being killed, but that did not stop them from the belief if they kept going they would be reunited with family. Furthermore, Elie Wiesel uses Fire and Night in the motif in the memoir Night to convey an underlying message about the need to have your family together in order to be emotionally alive.

In the memoir, “night” by Elie Wiesel is a personal story of his prior experiences during the Holocaust. The story describes the distress, suffering and unimaginable hardships that Wiesel encountered during this period. Despite the brutal physical labor, starvation, separation of his family, and the loss of loved ones, Elies high tolerance of his physical and mental ability made him surpase his own limitations. Through his resilience and inner strength, he navigated the challenges and did the unimaginable struggles that confronted him. Elies story is a monument to the persistence of the human spirit and the transformative potential of the human spirit.

Wiesel describes the brutal conditions that he and his fellow prisoners endured, including forced marches through bitter cold and with little or no food, water, or rest. Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, thinks these words after the first night in Birkenau concentration camp. After being separated from his mother and little sister forever, Wiesel then witnessed children being burned and innocent people being shot. Before these tragic events, he used to study the Talmud and Kabbalah every day. However, after one day in the camps, he no longer felt God’s presence.

In Night the reader gets an inside look on the traumatic and abusive experiences through; Elie Wiesel’s perspective. The story shows how the Jews were taken and dehumanized. During Elie’s experience in the camp, he starts to face change in emotions, goes through dehumanization, and he starts questioning his religious beliefs. Before the concentration camps, Elie was a passionate and innocent boy who loved his family, religion, and focusing on his school work. After being abused and traumatized by all the horrible killings and labor, Elie starts to question his faith in god.

Now imagine that living that terrible experience over and over again without being able to even feel sadness or remorse. During holocaust this is what a boy had to go through.
