In the article titled, “Arrogance, Deceit, Oversaturation At Root of NFL’s Ratings Decline”, CBS Boston writer Michael Hurley provides a long list of reasons as to why he believes the usually strong viewership and high ratings of the NFL on TV have gone down dramatically this year. Hurley touches upon a myriad of varying potential causes for the decline of the NFL’s ratings in order to provide his audience, likely sports fans, with an idea as to what exactly is going on to create such a problem. Although Hurley notifies the audience of various factors that may be causing the ratings to go down, his argument lacks depth and credibility due to an evident lack of ethos. Furthermore, Hurley seems to undermine the problem’s complex nature by hastily
The football player released by four NFL teams, the missionary from the Philippines, the Minor League Baseball outfielder, the quarterback who changed Christianity in football by taking a knee in prayer after every touchdown. These are all descriptions some may give regarding Tim Tebow. His childhood and experiences as a football player led him to be the person he is today. Due to taking pride in his strong faith, Tebow has had a large impact not only on the National Football League, but the entire world. Some might say the birth of Tebow was miraculous.
Colin Kaepernick Kneels During Salute At Game. Colin Kaepernick a full time NFL player decided he wanted to Kneel during the national anthem because he was against the social injustice and racial profiling by cops in America mostly the cops in Colorado. Colin, who had never done this before or has ever protested against this before, sparked controversy around the country because people thought it was rude, controversial, a stunt and irresponsible use of his power with his fans. Since then Colin has joined protests against this and other big time and small players have since kneeled or sat down during the solute.
A controversial topic currently circulating throughout the media and society, is professional athletes kneeling during the National Anthem. In my opinion, this is a completely useless, unnecessary action done just for attention. The theory behind the action is supposed to represent unity. Unity is not achieved by causing controversy, but it’s achieved by coming together and supporting each other when times get tough.
Tim Tebow is acknowledged by many as the greatest player in the history of college football, after being traded by the Denver Broncs in 2010 his number fifteen has become the league’s highest selling jersey. After Denver Broncs traded Tebow to the New York Jets in early 2012, Tebow continued to be featured in sports media. The most popular shows on television from Saturday Night Live, to Jimmy Fallon has featured Tebow and his religious gestures. In Tebow’s eyes, his success comes from God as it says in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only begotten son, that whoever believe’s in him will not perish but have everlasting life.”
Ackerman and Fishkin discuss this stating; “Registered voters would be called together in neighborhood meeting places, in small groups of 15 and larger groups of 500, to discuss the central issues raised by the campaign” (1). The multiplicity of publics throughout the nation in an attempt to ensure that all views are heard in an open forum runs parallel to Fraser’s idea that a multiplicity of publics is necessary to ensure equality in participation. These equal and strong publics are necessary, by the estimation of the authors, to
Kneeling for the National Anthem The controversy of people kneeling during the National Anthem has made many furious and others shocked. I believe it is ok to kneel for the national anthem, because we have the right to freedom of speech. The kneeling brings much attention, in result people begin to focus on the real issue. Others counter this protest by saying that it disrespects the flag and our members of the armed forces.
I think that Colin Kaepernick was wrong to not stand for the national anthem. I understand where he is coming from about African Americans being sometimes oppressed, but I believe it was extremely disrespectful to the men and women who defend our country. He also has made kneeling for the anthem a movement and many more athletes are doing it. Drew Brees is correct when saying that Kaepernick has insulted a "sacred" flag. I believe there is a time and a place where you can express your feelings, however during the national anthem before a game is not the right time nor place to do so.
Kneeling during the national anthem is a form of peacefully protesting instead of choosing to stay silent and not have a voice. Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick who is currently a free agent brought the attention to “kneeling during the national anthem” when he decided to take a knee during a preseason game. Him kneeling brought an uproar of people who believed he was being “disrespectful” and “unpatriotic”, others believed he was being “brave” and a “hero”. Kaepernick had a reason for doing so, he was standing up for social justice and police brutality again African Americans. Significance of The Flag
Ever noticed how sexist, racist and homophobic an American can be? If not, watch the Super Bowl. Before, during, and after the Super Bowl commercials that some people see as comedy, but some see these commercials very controversial, air. Coke, 84 Lumber and others have used people’s sex, race, and sexuality to sell their product or to promote their stance on a social injustice, which also helps sell their product or better their image. Sexualizing women, using Trump’s Wall for commerce, and featuring homosexuals in their commercials for publicity.
Holly Pryle Emily Chappell English 121 22 March 2018 Kneeling for the Anthem Every American child is raised with the knowledge that they were born in a country that by law gives them freedom of self-expression and the right to protest. However, this right does not mean that people must agree with you and in many cases, groups wind up at odds over differing opinions. Over the past few years America has seen many examples of this, most notably football players protesting injustice by kneeling during the anthem.
A lot of these teams are kneeling and linking arms to show unity and solidarity, then standing for the anthem after that.
When Colin Kaepernick protests like this it doesn 't just say that he believes this It also says that his team believes it. Because he did it on the field. However he had done anywhere else as a citizen rather than part of the team he would have been doing it as himself and it would only have reflected on himself not on his team. Not only does protesting like this hurt the values of the NFL it also goes against the mission statement. Here is the mission statement of the NFL: To provide our fans, communities and partners the highest quality sports and entertainment in the world, and to do so in a way that is consistent with our values.
Did you know that the first time the National Anthem was played at a sporting event was in 1862 at a baseball game? The National Anthem’s most prominent first steps toward becoming a tradition dates to Game 1 of the 1918 World Series. Fans and players were swelling with World War 1 patriotism, both standing with direct attention on the flag to honor our country. One of the players from the Red Sox even gave a military salute which allowed the National Anthem to become a tradition for baseball games, especially. Even after this, the Anthem was still reserved for more important events that took place.
