Analysis Of Compromises Made At The Constitutional Convention

The reason why the constitutional convention was called was because the existing constitution the Articles Of Confederation was not working so well.this was a problem because there was no court systems,no Chief Executive(An organizer),and the government could not force a state to pay their taxes. It is important to have these things in a government because imagine if there was no CEO to organize what taxes were being collected and which were not or if there were no courts then there would be chaos because no one will go to jail and if the government can’t make states pay taxes what can they do? These are all reasons why the articles of confederation were not good for the U.S.

At the Constitutional Convention, our founding fathers met to reconstruct the Articles of Confederation, not knowing that they would create the United States Constitution, an entire new format of government. They wanted to create a government that was powerful yet restricted in certain ways, in order to create equal representation for all people. Three main compromises were made at the Constitutional Convention. These compromises were The Great Compromise, the Three-Fifths Compromise, and the addition of the Bill of Rights.

The new Federalism was a system of government which divided power between the federal government and various state governments (answer.com, Pg.2). The Constitution gave certain powers to the federal government, other powers to the state governments and yet other powers to both (xxx, xxxx). In other words, the federal and state governments cooperated with each other, but the federal government was always first in maintaining a strong and balanced America. Federalism promoted big government with paper money, national banks, managed taxes, and the power to make treaties, declare war or raise and support armies (Textbook pg.

The Great Compromise which was founded at the Constitutional Convention wasn't formed without trouble. Many of the delegates that participated in the convention were wealthy landowners and lawyers, who owned many slaves. They failed to notice the diversity that excited within the nation. As they talked how to repair the Articles of Confederation, issues would arise that would create continuous debates amongst each other. One of the issues that would arise would be the nature of the new government.

Rather, the United States Constitution declares that they are to be elected by what is called the Electoral College. Established in 1787 during the Constitutional Convention, our Founding Fathers formed the Electoral College as a compromise between majority rule and congressional representative appointment. The framers biggest fear was the fear of power, and they did their upmost to limit and control the control and limit the power of the president. In conclusion, the Constitutional Convention faced many conflicts. Being forced to resolve conflicts on Congress representation, local and central governments, and slave voting. All these conflicts would have changed the way the United States developed, and it was important that they get it right. The Federalist Party was the United States’s first political party that consisted of: Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Jay, George Washington, and John Adams, additionally known as the "federalists." These Federalists, predominantly led by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, believed that establishing a large national government was necessary to “create a more perfect union”. Thus, this idea resulted in their decision to construct a document to justify government;The Constitution. In order for the Constitution to be ratified, it needed approval from nine of thirteen states. The Federalists supported the Constitution, while another party called, the Anti-Federalists, opposed the Constitution.

The Electoral College was made because the first leaders did not want a government where only the majority of its people ruled. They thought that it would be unfair. So, the candidate who receives more votes from the public never wins the presidency. So, why even campaign if the goal is to win less votes than your opponent so you don’t win the popular vote but win the presidency? In Document A, it shows us that any candidate could win the 270 votes by winning only eleven states. These eleven states are; California (55), Texas (38), New York (29), Florida (29), Pennsylvania (20), Illinois (29), Ohio (18), Michigan (16), Georgia (16), North Carolina (15), and New Jersey (14).

However this idea was eventually scrapped and they wrote a whole new constitution. This constitution would protect America from tyranny, so they could keep a civilized and united country. The Constitution that was made helped defend America from almost all types of tyranny and is still helping us hundreds of years later. Each elector must cast one vote for President and one vote for Vice President. In order to win the electoral college, and be nominated as President of the United States, the candidate must gain 270 of the 538 electoral votes. Every four years we hold an election to decide who will be hold the office for the President of the United States. The founding fathers established the Electoral College to keep a candidate from manipulating the publics opinion and keep them from gaining absolute power. It also was set up so that smaller states would be able to have same power or say as the bigger states (Why the Electoral College). Each state is giving “Electors” based on the number of members it has in the U.S. House of Representatives, and also gets a 2 Electors for the two members they have in the U.S. Senate. Washington D.C. however only has 3 Electors.

The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.
