This text is written in the preface of Adeline Yen Mah’s second book, Chinese Cinderella, originally published on September 1999 by Delacorte Press. The author, Adeline Yen Mah (嚴君玲), is a retired doctor in the United States whose passion is to write since childhood. She was once a chief physician specializing in anesthesiology; however, after the publication of her first novel, Falling Leaves, she decided to give up medicine and pursue writing full-time. The story revolves around the experiences of Adeline Yen Mah as she tries to prove her worth to her cruel, abusive, and unloving family with only a few people caring for her.

The cover of the book reveals what the book is about, for it reveals that the story is true and that it revolves around the unwanted little girl shown in the picture. As I read through the book, I came across some pages wherein pictures of the characters are shown, and this section was truly helpful for me; I enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading the captions, for these pictures and captions satisfied my curiosity regarding what the characters look like, and it made me feel like I have gotten to know the characters …show more content…

I felt that Chinese Cinderella lacked something, and it took me a moment to realize what it is. A lot of parts are skipped all throughout. Although the book is written like diary entries, the events in consecutive chapters are sometimes months apart; a huge period of time is between them. It’s like Mah got lazy to continue her diary entries, but after a few months, she got into writing again. However, I do understand that this issue is because of her not remembering anymore due to her old age.

One lesson I learned after reading Chinese Cinderella is not to give up; do not let other people stop us from achieving our dreams; the only people who can hinder us are ourselves. Despite of all the challenges we face in our lives, we should keep on striving to achieve the dreams we have because one positive dream weighs a lot more than a thousand negative
